ksherlock··on Ask HN: How much money did you get from the Facebook privacy settlement?
$31.22
ksherlock··on The Journey Before main()
There's also binfmt support, which can check a supposedly executable file against some magic and auto-launch an interpreter (like wine or java or dosemu). I looked into it for something once but in my case the magic wasn't good enough.

Anecdotally, the hot dogs are the hardest part.

"Well, when the president does it ... that means that it is not illegal" -- Richard Nixon (1977)

"Well, when the president does it ... that means that it is not illegal" -- SCOTUS (2024)

That leaves impeachment as the only legal remedy, which you've correctly identified as not a possibility with the current congress.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Can a Capital-Flipping Tax System Pay Off the U.S. Debt
What you call "more money" is better described as "runaway inflation."
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Can a Capital-Flipping Tax System Pay Off the U.S. Debt
I don't understand your core mechanism. As you've described it, joe taxpayer pays, say, $600 in taxes to the IRS. The IRS gives that money to the federal reserve. The federal reserve runs their money printer and gives $2,700 back to joe taxpayer and $2,700 to the treasury. That's just inflation with extra steps. It would be interesting to see people clamoring to pay -more- taxes though.

ksherlock··on ChkTag: x86 Memory Safety
For memory allocation, POSIX (posix_memalign) has been guaranteeing alignment since 2001. C11 added equivalent functionality (aligned_alloc). C++17 incorporated it (std::aligned_alloc) as well.
ksherlock··on The longest baseball game took 33 innings to win
That's the 9-9-9 challenge - 9 innings, 9 beers, 9 hotdogs.
ksherlock··on IDEs we had 30 years ago and lost (2023)
That's true (you can see it yourself with emacs -nw -q) and the picture is shown in the article. With a completely useless menubar.

ksherlock··on Sea Rise Simulator (2023)
"Simulator"? Given the ungodly CPU usage this needs, I'd say it's directly responsible for the sea rise.
ksherlock··on After 2 decades of tinkering, MAME cracks the Hyper Neo Geo 64
The 65816 has valid data address (vda) and valid program address (vpa) pins which are essentially the same as fc0/1/2 , minus the supervisor/user mode support.

    vda vpa
0 0 internal operation, address bus may be invalid
0 1 valid program address, may be used for program cache control
1 0 valid data address, may be used for data cache control
1 1 opcode fetch, may be for program cache control and single step control

OS X used to use Samba, but Samba went GPL v3 so the rolled their own server implementation (smbx). The client is based on freebsd's code, I believe. https://github.com/apple-oss-distributions/SMBClient
ksherlock··on Help us raise $200k to free JavaScript from Oracle
Shower thought conspiracy theory: If the lawsuit looks like it might succeed, Oracle could make it disappear by ... buying Deno. Is their end goal to free javascript or is it to find an exit?

ksherlock··on Justice Department Announces Actions to Combat North Korean Remote IT Workers
No need to be complicated. Just ask about Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

The real bubble will come once interest rates start dropping.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Is Reddit going the way of Stack Overflow?
There are, ~140,000 active subreddits.

Dudes be like "Reddit sucks". My brother in Christ, you made the sandwich.

ksherlock··on Kenvue stock drops on report RFK Jr will link autism to Tylenol during pregnancy
I considered that when the news hit but didn't. Even if there's nothing to the report and it's forgotten in a week, that sound you heard Friday was tens of thousands of trail lawyers jizzing in their pants. $1.8 billion powerball ain't got nothing on the payday they're looking at.
ksherlock··on Microsoft BASIC for 6502 Microprocessor – Version 1.1
to expand on that, this assembler include the address mode as part of the instruction opcode rather than as part of the operand.

normal:

lda #0 ; load accumulator immediate
    lda (index),y ; load accumulator indirect,y
weird:

ldai 0 ; load accumulator immediate
ldady index ; load accumulator indirect,y
ksherlock··on Microsoft BASIC for 6502 Microprocessor – Version 1.1
While the bullshit generator might think it's "Compatible with period assemblers for 6502 development", that's a weird-ass cross assembler. For my money, a commented disassembly like https://6502disassembly.com/a2-rom/Applesoft.html using a more standard assembler is easier to read. It's interesting to compare the two though.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: How do you fight YouTube addiction and procrastination? I'm struggling
Install an ad-blocker and google will cut you off. win-win.
ksherlock··on Hurricane category 6 could be introduced under new storm severity scale
Nah, a hurricane that wipes out Mar-a-Lago will get the same FEMA attention as a hurricane that wipes out Club Bedminster.
ksherlock··on Ask HN: Did modern AI's coding abilities make you lose interest in programming?
Nah. Did modern porn make you lose interest in bumping uglies?
