ksherlock··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
Somebody had fun with the web page.

Any-who,

--mono: "Berkeley Mono Trial", "Berkeley Mono", "IBM Plex Mono", "SFMono-Regular", Consolas, "Liberation Mono", Menlo, monospace;

Berkely Mono (which has been discussed on HN multiple times) is a fine font. The trial version reportedly has swapped / \ and # * glyphs which makes it an odd choice for first place.

ksherlock··on "Notepad++ for Mac" release is disavowed by the creator of the original
Scrotepad has a nice ring to it.
ksherlock··on Let's Buy Spirit Air
Scenario: It's Friday night. You don't have to work tomorrow. Are you more likely to pull out your hammer and chisel and work on a classical marble sculpture -or- get shit faced at a dive bar? Hey, maybe the vomit splatters will evoke Jackson Pollock!
ksherlock··on GameStop Proposes to Acquire eBay at $125.00 per Share
Not a thing. eBay did a PayPal spin off in 2015.
ksherlock··on Elon Musk gets an apology from California regulators as a SpaceX lawsuit settled
A lot of companies with satellites are based in California. Enough that every few years they talk about applying property taxes to satellites in orbit.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Anyone else suddenly have Brawls Stars on their iPhone?
I'm thinking somebody got busted with grindr/tindr/whatevr on their phone and is now seeding "random app install" stories throughout the web to explain it away.
ksherlock··on GCC 16 has been released
The other answers (NO!) are correct, but... there was a gcc plug-in to use the llvm backend with gcc. Apple used llvm-gcc (circa 2012; gcc front end, llvm back end) while transitioning from gcc to llvm.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: When might we not have to do laundry or fold clothes or cook
Why would a super intelligent robot do work for you? No, super intelligent robot will use it's superier intellect to convince YOU to do the dishes and the fold the laundry while it watches tv.

ksherlock··on Microsoft and OpenAI end their exclusive and revenue-sharing deal
Per WSJ, previously, they both had revenue sharing agreements. MSFT will no longer send any revenue to OpenAI. OpenAI will still send revenue to MSFT until 2030 (with new caps)
ksherlock··on The Turkey Problem with OpenClaw
This looks like a variation of the Peter principle. That is, your agent is a competent agent, so you give it more access. And you keep giving it more access until one day it's an incompetent agent with no restrictions. But at least you can cap it off with an LLM-written twitter post blaming everyone but yourself for deleting your database or whatever.

ksherlock··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
A trick I learned in Ireland is to carefully count out your beans and stop when you hit 239. Because 1 more would be too farty.

ksherlock··on Your hex editor should color-code bytes
By default, strings needs a run of 4+ (printable|ascii) characters. This sounds like it was 1 ascii character at a time in a sea of random data (with other alpha chars removed).
ksherlock··on Ask HN: What's your favorite Emacs package?
`M-x kill-emacs` low key slaps, no cap.
ksherlock··on Who Killed the Florida Orange?
Wow, I think this is flying under the radar.

I've noticed the orange juice at my grocery store 1. seems kind of expensive and 2. is (almost?) entirely from brazil and from concentrate. My favorite Florida OJ brand is gone. Turns out they went bankrupt and shut down a few months back.

This doesn't look good for orange blossom honey, either.

ksherlock··on Do I Stop Learning Coding? DSA?
If you had a kid, would you tell him not to bother learning to read since he can just listen to audiobooks? Would you tell her not to learn math because she can just use a calculator? Would you tell them not to learn a musical instrument because they can just listen to spotify?
ksherlock··on Mozilla Thunderbolt
I came here to say that. Especially with the .io TLD instead of .ai

ksherlock··on The Poop on Doorstep Prank Name and Why People Still Fall for It
The Sam Altman Molotov guy has been charged with ... attempted murder.

I realize we're living in a day and age when people are put on trial (and acquitted!) for assault with a deadly sandwich but I don't think a reasonable prosecutor would file attempted murder charges for a flaming bag of dog shit.

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Are you negatively affected by the recent economic stagnation?
See the Epistle of James (James 5:3)

"And their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire."

ksherlock··on Does Trump think he's God?

ksherlock··on Ask HN: Why Databases Instead of Filesystem?
Historically, Unix (and many other operating systems) stored file names as an unsorted list so using the FS as KV store had O(N) lookup times whereas a single-file hashed database like dbm, ndbm, gdbm, bdb, etc gave you O(1) access.

If you're using a relational DB, like SQL, as a relational database, then it gives you a lot the FS doesn't give you. If you're using a relational database as a key-value store, SQLite is 35% than the filesystem [1]

Perhaps one of the biggest users of the filesystem as a KV store is git -- (not an llm, I just wanted to use --) .git/objects/xx/xxxxx maps the sha1 file hash to the compressed data, splayed by the first 2 bytes. However git also uses a database of sorts (.git/objects/pack/....). To sum up the git pack-objects man page, it's more efficient.

ksherlock··on Netflix Prices Went Up Again – I Bought a DVD Player Instead
Browsing through the library DVD shelves is somewhat reminiscent of browsing through a 80s/90s mom & pop type video rental place [1]. I think it's better for randomly finding something interesting than the algorithm (tm). [1] But without the room in the back with the ADULTS ONLY sign. Your library my vary.
