ksec··on Show HN: Run an 80B Qwen in 4.3 GB of RAM on a Mac, and a 35B on an iPhone
>It’s like claiming that a company that goes from making $1 to $1k to $100k to $1mm in a 4 year period has decelerating growth.

Because it is decelerating growth. There is a reason why we use YoY percentage in annual and financial reporting.

>when a 1t param model runs off a $200 SSD instead of a $50k rack of Nvidia chips.

I am 100% sure this won't happen in 10 years time. At least not on a $200 SSD. But I wouldn't be surprised if it ran on $1K to $2K HBF SSD. It will still be better than a $50K Rack.

ksec··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
Again. We need a storage medium that is reliable, has roughly 200GB of capacity, small in size, relatively affordable to press.

Otherwise, there is only one option left, make it illegal to do certain things and ensure the ownership belongs to customers.

ksec··on Apple's New CEO Taps Retired Hardware Executive for Management Team
I was just talking about I have high hopes for John Ternus yesterday [1] and today we have great news. Laura Legros is good!

There was another guy from supply chain and operations that got canceled due to some silly remarks filmed on TikTok. And a few others who left that team after that. I wonder if this was the reason that contributed to Apple's current struggle in getting DRAM capacity and pricing allocated. But it would be great to have them back as well.

Scott Forstall joined the Apple anniversary party. I hope that is a sign for things to come.

I was hoping for some benchmarks. Performance of CPU Core in the past 30 years.
ksec··on Apple Acquiring Materials Science Company PlasmaSolve
I am wondering if anyone on HN is familiar or an expert on Material Science and offer any insight or educated guess as to why acquire this company,

Edit: 9to5mac has a piece on it but it is still not convincing. It is like acquiring a 3D Modelling Software for yourself only and close it down because you think it has a strategic advantage.

ksec··on SwiftUI After 7 Years
While reading this comment, two of Steve Job's line pops up in my head. I think it was the Apple Park opening, and Steve response to insult in WWDC 199x.

> "We need to be true to ourselves, and remember what is important, that is what going to keep Apple Apple, is if we keep us, us."

> "You have got to start with the customers experience and work backwards to the technology.

Right now it feels a lot like Apple without Steve Jobs the first time round. On paper there are a lot of cool tech being worked on. But in the end it was tech from NeXT that really shines.

And a lot of these tech don't actually benefits the customers. If the choice was a language and framework that is slightly harder to developers but brings overall higher quality Apps because the barrier is higher. Compared to a language that wants to replace Assembly to Javascript while being easy to learn like Visual Basic and for everyone to code. I would much rather pick the former.

Edit: I suddenly remember I also submitted a Core Animation introduction video from Steve a while ago on HN [1]. 20 years later we have gone backwards on a lot of things.

ksec··on Qwen3.8-Max: A New Bar for Coding and Cowork
For those of us who don't have the time to follow closely, Qwen3.6-27B being Open Source and Open Weight, what level is this compared to other Western paid version?

Just so that we know what 3.8 would be like.

I currently have about 150 Tabs of Antirez posting on AI and running local model I haven't had the time to read. And there are probably some prerequisite reading or other research in between as well. I just wish there are some very high level overview and news coverage on all these.

ksec··on SwiftUI After 7 Years
7 Years of release on Swift UI, 12 years for Swift.

This isn't 7 years of development, but 7 - 12 years after release. And to most these past 7 - 12 years are an ongoing beta development. It is unfinished, unpolished with no end in sight. And I have been extremely critical since the beginning.

But the problem runs much much deeper. It isn't the technology that is the problem, not the devs who are making it. It is the person making the decision as to WHY this was allowed from the get go. WHY this was allowed to be released, or even before all that WHY resources for development of these ideas were allowed in the first place.

For every yes that are a thousand no. Instead a lot of Apple's software development can be summarised as resume or KPI bonus driven development. It is not as bad as Google and Microsoft, but it is clear Apple have this problem a well.

If you look back into Jobs era of Apple software, ( and not just software ) Apple manage to have done most things 2x better with half the resources. The whole Apple now is bloated. And yet everyone is chanting Craig Federighi all the way.

And it is funny because for the vast majority of these 7-12 years I was the only few on HN and Twitter that was extremely skeptical of it, to the point I gave up writing ( or ranting ) about it before majority Swift and Swift UI developers negative sentiment emerged.

And I have often asked the same question every single time, what if they just spend one fifth of the resources to iterate and improve C / Objective-C and Cocoa. All the resources on Swift and everything adjacent to it could have been better spent somewhere else.

I have high hope for John Ternus, hopefully he gets his political game right and manage to change course for Apple software somewhere down the line.

ksec··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
They are doing both landlocked and mobile deep-sea methods farming with success. In typical Chinese fashion as they have done with Fruit and other food productions, I wouldn't be surprised if they could scale it 10x within 5 years. I doubt it will take away Norway's supply to Japan in the short term due to quality and trust issues. But export to China may be lowered.
ksec··on Wikimedia Foundation refuses union recognition, hires union-busting law firm

ksec··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
>Some claim the do not use them at all.

It is against the law in most if not all EU countries. It is also the dispute between US and EU agriculture trade.

ksec··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
1. The Title should be "Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences". It fits the character limit, why change it?

2. A lot of the conditions for Salmon farming can be drastically improved or completely eliminated if they have done it further away in deep sea rather than coast. It just cost more.

3. China is rapidly improving their Salmon Farming so there isn't much to worry about for Norway. In 10 - 20 years time half of it will be gone.

ksec··on How the words we teach English language learners changed
I mean the subject is interesting but I have the say the design of the page is not only janky and needlessly complicated with animations.
ksec··on GPUs could explode to multiple TB with new storage-inspired memory tech
You will literally have to have a specific HBF controller on the GPU which I doubt would be any smaller than current state of the art SSD controller.

I am not entirely sure it is a Win Win situation.

ksec··on Atom is better than RSS, in ways that matter
I remember ( I may be very wrong ) eventually RSS and Atom became one and the same thing for consumer and that all RSS reader would parse Atom feed, RSS became the logo and the name people know, atom was used behind the scene.

Apart from iTunes, as the article said.

It has been 20+ years I do hope someone on HN can now spills the beans as to why.

ksec··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
>A lot of people do use RSS without realizing it, via podcasts.

A lot of people were using Google Reader without ever knowing what RSS was all about. And when Google reader was gone, they stopped using it, Facebook then taken the newsfeed over.

ksec··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
>As someone who was a big fan of Reader and worked at Google at the time (not on G+): I never understood why they didn’t try to put Reader into G+.

Oh there were many post on HN about the politics of G+ at the time, how meta ( Facebook ) are going to crush them with social graph etc. And G+ was effectively its own little organisation within Google. I remember there were something about RSS they didn't want. But I guess I have to dig up my bookmarks to find it.

ksec··on NetBSD 11.0
I do think all the BSD, despite how niche it may seems are doing well and in an ongoing development stream. And at least they seem larger than Solaris / Illumos, despite some of the cool tech solaris branch has.

All your Netflix video streaming from Open Connect CDN Edge are served by FreeBSD. [1] Serving at 800Gbps per Server.[2] This was 4 years ago, drewg123 also hangs around on HN so I hope he read this and there are some 1.6Tbps update soon :).

NetBSD runs on everything. So it's part and sometimes NetBSD itself is running only vanity of embedded systems. A lot of these information are pre 2020. But given how slowly the embedded industry moves I wouldn't be surprised if it is still largely the same. I do wonder if it was grown though. It is also the only Rump kernel implementation that I know of.

OpenBSD ends up a lot on HN, many part of our every day internet usage are done with components maintained by them. There are a lot of network appliance and server usage using OpenBSD.

I think BSD deserves more credit, but for its license and philosophy I guess is it mostly working as intended.

Compared to Ruby. Elixir land doesn't have something similar to Rails, and phoenix is not it.

ksec··on Ten Ways NAS Is Getting Enshitified
I don't think it is that bad. Especially Ubnt just released their UNAS Pro. ( Although only comes with BTRFS on consumer and ZFS only on the Enterprise. )

I still think Apple should have bring their AirPort Express and Time Capsule back. Instead they wanted everyone to be on their iCloud subscription.

ksec··on Superlogical
I seriously doubt it is for the money.

It said they are funded, but it doesn't mean they lost control or have to be VC hyper growth. Apart from Notable Capital and Amplify Partners all others are individuals. There are lots of benefits having these group of company founders and CEO as investors. They are likely interested in the problem space as well.

Had it been hyper growth startup you would be looking at a16z or other bigger names.

Flashback to when Mitchell first introduce Vagrant [1] to HN, which of course was the how everything from HashiCorp started.

I thought it was't that long ago, may be 8, or at best 10-12 years.

Turns out 16 years has passed.

Curious if it would be another project using Zig.
