>At this point i am OK with being 6 months behind the "frontier",

Indeed. A few people [1] pointed on twitter that current best of Open Source Open Weight models are better than all the frontier model 6 - 8 months ago. And we heard Deepseek v5 and MiMO v3 are quite a leap.

I am not understanding the value proposition of these frontier model. Or at least not to a point they are looking at $1T or $2T market cap. Especially MiMO which may be ( correct me if I am wrong ) the most transparent model we currently have?

Or did I overlook or missing something? It is quite scary if true.

ksec··on Apple's New CEO Moves to Overhaul Company to Run Faster and Leaner
Can't view the article even with archive, but it is nice FINALLY someone in Apple saw how bloated they are.
ksec··on Profit Margins of the Largest Companies
I think only measuring profits and not taking into account total revenue is not a fair comparison. Especially when there are companies that make insane revenue and little profit due to commodity cycles.
ksec··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
I remember all the Twitter account that keep saying Starship isn't physically / scientifically possible.

I am so looking forward to a successfully launch today.

ksec··on Analysis: EVs are now nine times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in UK
No, at least not yet. It was one of the issues when discussing with EU, as they were worried those EV will get routed through UK to EU without tariff.

ksec··on Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees
It is estimated Apple Pay does anywhere between $5T to $10T transaction per year. That is everything from Credit Card to Debit Card. If we average out at 0.1% per transaction over $5T, that is $5B per year.

The transaction itself doesn't touch any Apple severs. In case anyone is wondering if there is an operational cost. There is a set up cost though with the initial verification and sometimes Apple do charge a one time fee per card set up.

There is a privacy angle with using Apple Pay. But I am unsure how much info banks and network is not getting because of it.

ksec··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
>EU countries went from killing each other in two of the most deadly wars to having a union in 30 years.

I guess you mean EEC in 1958, because EU was officially formed in 1993. And normally people would count the period of the two World War and starting to count by the end of it. Either way it is a lot more than 30 years.

ksec··on AMD Takes the Lid Off of Next-Gen EPYC 9006 Venice as Zen 6 Comes to Servers
It is hard to get excited about it when it won't be on AWS or any more Cloud vendor until 2027 earliest. And we all know these Zen 6 while being state of the art design on x86 is still far from the best CPU design.

And given all the demand from AI I wouldn't expect these to be cheap either. I am really hoping Nvidia comes in with their Server CPU and start competing.

ksec··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
We were talking about Visual FoxPro only a few days ago. [1] And one of those same companies in my comment [2] uses an old ordering system that is still in DOS and they boot up a VM to use it. They still have a printing machine ( not a normal printer ) for those order printing connected via a Parallel Port. I don't know the details of how that works though.

And by the end of all that, the order will be Faxed. Manually.

Did they tried to email it or automate it. Hell yes. Did it work? No.

ksec··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
I don't know, I am just guessing because not a single American company has publicly stated they are against its product use up to a certain degree by DoD? If they have not publicly declared it then yes, DoD simply don't sign the contract.
ksec··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
People don't buy a new car every 2 to 3 years. While people would like their car to work for at least 10 years if not more. It also has much higher resale value compare to a phone.

And while I think Nokia phone are quite sturdy, I wouldn't necessary put them equate it to "quality". Especially when it was compared to an iPhone.

ksec··on What About Rails?
The summary is exactly why a lot of people is upset.

>That’s what bothers me most. I’m skeptical of his AI claims, but that’s not the real issue here.

>The problem is that he stood up at Rails World and told everyone that he was moving his product off Rails and the best thing he could come up with to say to people still using Rails was that we’re “the best of the best.” Thanks, I guess.

>Maybe Rails is done, in the way the Mosscap project claims. Maybe it’s time to focus on stability and maintenance. If that’s the plan, someone needs to say it. If it isn’t, then let’s hear about where we’re headed. DHH did neither.

ksec··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
>It's interesting how this stuff gets spun on social media by people who don't watch the content.

I watched it live, and a few actually in the show have very different perspective to what you suggest, they were just keep it to themselves and not posting it on twitter. Some did, but then deleted it.

And no one is questioning he doesn't like ruby anymore. But it was obvious there was nothing much said about the future of Ruby and Rails.

ksec··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
It would have been the case if he said all the things in keynote unprepared like in a podcast. i.e Speaking his mind.

But it wasn't.

ksec··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I actually have no problem with him even if he directly say it out loud announcing the death of Ruby and Rails. And I am not even against agents taking over some jobs meaning less jobs for current developers. That is part of how new technology has always been, replacing some and we move on.

It is just that it shouldn't be done in the opening keynote of a conference. I thought it was very irresponsible to the other smaller sponsors and those who paid to join. I know Shopify fund most of it and is likely on the same stand.

ksec··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
Well I guess you could summarise your point as "Performance doesn't matter".

Which is fine. Have a great day.

ksec··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 series
I have seen this far too many times on HN. A design that put Performance Per Watt first is how you extract more multicore performance when you are fundamentally limited by cooling.
ksec··on Pentagon Investigating How F-35 Fighter Jet Parts Bound for US Were Diverted
I would not be surprised Hong Kong used to be part of the protocol and transport system but something wasn't updated in the guideline or memo post 2019 so it was somehow flown to Hong Kong.

> Apple gets lazy on top.

A20 Pro P-Core is the largest jump in performance per watt in the past 5 years. I am not sure why Apple is lazy in their hardware front. Not the same could be said about their software though.

ksec··on Meta VR Glasses
I am so so glad Meta, or any company continue to invest in AR and VR. Not because I like AR / VR, to the contrary I am not a big fan of wearing a glasses to use it.

But it is the only thing that will move Low Latency Computing forward. Everything in modern computing is slow, we might have increased throughput by 1000 or 10000x over the course of 30+ years. But latency has gone backwards, from Apps to OS UI response. Decent AR/VR experience mimicking the real world would require sub 10ms results. And this should finally force developers to take latency into account.

ksec··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
I don't think we do this much on HN but for those who don't know, it is an internet meme from Shark Tank, which O'Leary is part of. But the line is actually from Barbara.
ksec··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
>I was wondering where you got the info about A20 Pro: . Also I imagine the A20 Pro is very similar to an M6, but downsized.

From Geekerwan and many other Chinese sources. The M6 CPU Core is more like an M5 die shrink.

Edit: Here is the Geekerwan Video. Absolute insane improvement that a lot of current media and press seems to have missed.

ksec··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Unfortunately yes because Rails has always been a framework of extraction. Now they are not even coding anymore there is nothing to extract. No one is a programmer but everyone is a maker.

ksec··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
I was hoping there will be news on Rails 9.0. Feels like this is the end of Ruby Rails.

Hey is not even a Ruby Rails App anymore. And indirectly admitting Ruby is slow considering they manage to cut 99.9% of CPU with their rewrite in Rust.

ksec··on How did AMD Ryzen get 50% faster in two years?
The AMD EPYC Zen 6 is built on TSMC N2, so it is a similar comparison including clock speed, x86 just hasn't delivered.

Apple has been iterating on a yearly basis, A17, A18, A19 and A20 are all different core design. Some of them just so happens to come with new node. On the other hand Zen 5 to Zen 6 took 24 to 30 months.
