kps··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
It does something using neovim's internal terminal mode rather than use the file descriptors it was called with. Most commonly this breaks when a command produces an interactive prompt or uses a pager.

I've used vi and nvi and (now) vim, and tried neovim, but :! is broken and “Conform to POSIX vi” is one of their “Non-goals”.
kps··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
> They’re Facebook in many people’s minds.

And Meta loves it. People can ‘not use Facebook’ while living on WhatsApp and Instagram.

I'd prefer not to.

> […] left of the alphabetic cluster would have forced the hand to move further away from the home row.

The Star left cluster are primarily operations that pair the left hand on the keys with the right hand on the mouse. This derives from Engelbart's Mother of All Demos with the left-side keyset paired with the right-side mouse.

> The poorest country I'm familiar with is Zambia, where about 90% of the population have a mobile subscription.

Only 85%¹ of the population are over the age of 4. Smart kids they've got.

kps··on I don't like passkeys
I'm not in the US, but friends there tell me that Home Depot routinely delivers from the local store within a few hours.

(Here, unfortunately, their web site is useless crap.)

kps··on I don't like passkeys
I agree with you; those are all reasons I only use my phone for on-the-go messaging or navigation. I'm against the idea that you should have to have a secure (against the owner) connected phone on your person at all times in order to sign in to a web service.
kps··on I don't like passkeys
You don't. A laptop might still be a general-purpose computer under the owner's control, and we discourage those.
kps··on I don't like passkeys
> Isn't there a workflow where you scan a QR code to confirm the pass key on your phone?

For people in this position, if they had their phone, they probably wouldn't be logging in on a computer anyway.

kps··on This Code Is CRAP (2011)
> it doesn't account for the control flow indirection that happens through OO method dispatch itself

Every indirect call is a conditional branch, where the condition can be arbitrarily far away in time and space.

kps··on Ottawa to help finance nationwide sovereign internet network
I predict this will end up as handouts to our telecom oligopoly.
kps··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Give me 10.6.9 with nothing changed except support for current machines.
kps··on The case against JPEG XL
That's probably not the case. `cjxl` preserves metadata, but early on, some popular metadata extractors (exiftool, exiv2) silently ignored it.
kps··on The case against JPEG XL
> Web publishers should definitely be stripping metadata at least

No, they shouldn't. Not blindly. Metadata can include copyright license information, such that stripping it violates the license to reproduce the image.

kps··on The case against JPEG XL
I am sure that none of the `.gif` files on my computer have been silently replaced.

And there absolutely are cases where a lossless GIF is smaller than a lossy video format.

kps··on The case against JPEG XL
Agreed. Browsers should support general-purpose image formats. I'm not interested in another “web codec” that's not good for anything but passive delivery.

kps··on Hepburn Romanization: How to Read Japanese in the Latin Alphabet
What surprises me (only a little) is that Japan continues to use Chinese characters when they've got a perfectly good native syllabary.
kps··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
And ‘Fed’ has a spoon in the middle. (That may not have been deliberate, since even with overnight delivery my takeout still arrives cold.)
