koziserek··on Mozilla launching “Thundermail” email service to take on Gmail, Microsoft 365
whoa, I just imagined a world where USPS, Deutche Post, etc - offer domains, servers, cloud services - as a natural extension of treir previous roles..

koziserek··on Apple Maps Might Start Showing Ads
The entire paradigm difference or "features" which you are lacking is exactly the way the providers want you to funnel you - compare Organic maps (using osm), which only allow you to browse and navigate, to gm or am, which will always prefer you to be served with opening hours and ads of their partners, then only show GO LEFT, WARM, WARMER, you're almost there, now CONSUME&BUY!

And come back to our app again if you need to get a taxi or buy a fare... cmon, sweet convenience!

Then to wake up in a reality where you forgot why north was showing on top of the screen, you prefer it to turn map orientation with your body movements and ofc whisper more dopamine inducing advices.

koziserek··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
Me and my partner/friends travel with some privileges due to my work in air transport industry, so business class seats on trans-oceanic flights for 150$ or so

Still hate the experience in comparison to modern rail.

But security theatre is apparently necessary, see "golden age of hijacking" 1968-72: over 300 events in five years, that's a hijack a week!

Thou shalt not kill
koziserek··on Threads of God
Definitely not a place or time for extended discussion on this, but I'm quite hopeful that in another century or two it will become a shameful page in history books - the fact that when we were already able to sustain our civilisation without generating unnecessary suffering of other beings - we continued to do so out of convenience.

500 years ago if you were born into peasant family, you usually stayed peasant no matter what personal effort and talent you brought to this world.

200 years ago your sister would be treated as a posession of a guy who married her.

I'm happy that our beautiful traditions evolve into more thoughtful iterations.

And I hope that logic and kindness will continue to increase their impact on our lives and policies.

Merry Christmas.

Served in a liquid infused with boiled bones of lesser animals. You've got to love the level of hypocrisy of organised religion as well.

koziserek··on The Intelligence Age
I'm sceptical about humanity's future, and not only with perspective of AGI getting out of control.. Average human won't be able to harness new powers.

solarpunk envisioned, possible today:

- entire human knowledge available on palm of your hand..!

vs

cyberdaftpunk actually more common:

- another idiot driver killed somebody when being busy with his candy crush saga or instagram celebrity vid.

koziserek··on Gentle Guide to Self-Hosting
Indeed nowadays killing an animal is hidden behind industrial vail.

Unfortunately, it also normalized and further desensitivied us to the topic.

Though I'm quite happy to see that eating sentient beings gets out of fashion, at least in developed world.

tens of dozens, even!
koziserek··on Writing a book in the age of open source
Some people prefer to shape the world also by choosing their consumption habits, e.g.:

- encourage development of libre software, to reduce entry barriers for newcomers, allow experimentation, sharing knowledge and reducing trillion-dollar companies dominance

- commute with bicycle or electric vehicle, so the planet lasts longer, and anti-liberal governments controlling the resources enjoy our money little less

- don't plan holidays in countries which are stuck in teocracy, autocracy or exploiting their citizens (N Korea, SA, China...)

- don't buy products originating from such countries, or produced with use of child labor or animal suffering

koziserek··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Earthlings (2005)

as we are born into a civilisation taking for granted that exploitation of other live beings is something natural and ethically acceptable / neutral.

Unfortunately, our lifestyle decisions tend to support a machninery of suffering only comparable to nazi concentration camps.

oh, and speaking of, if you lived far enough (temporarily / culturally / geographically) it's good to recall once in a while what atrocites humans are capable of, even in regards to other humans:

Fantastic app.

To reach perfection for me, it would need:

- to allow storing my POIs in some sync-able location (e.g. Nextcloud folder)

- to improve rendering and reach same level of beauty as mapy.cz / Windy has...

Just beware - this iFixit’s set, I assume by the looks of end cap on the photo, it comes with a plastic handle. Bigger sets come with screwdriver made fully out of aluminium. Much better quality, feeling, lower friction.
koziserek··on The obsessive pleasures of mechanical-keyboard tinkerers
In the realm of programmable keyboards, it doesn’t really matter which OS you will use it with…

My golden medium is Anne Pro II, even though I own new model F. But more and more I’m getting drawn to an idea of building 36 keys custom.
