If it's 15 years behind budget and many multiples over budget, it wouldn't be DOGE's fault then?
kowbell··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I was so mad when they removed the fourth option. I can't remember which one was which, but one meant "open in a webview inside this app" and the other was "open in a new tab in your default browser". It was still terrible UX but I liked at least having that choice.
kowbell··on AI coding is gambling
Perhaps part of their portfolio is the code they've hand written, and part of it is demonstrating they are able to use this new tool to make something that works (despite how imperfect the tool is, as we see so many people point out)
kowbell··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
Hey, that still means it's higher than the median annual rise AND higher than most years!

Let's not forget that with both porn AND all the other "junk food" on social media that we waste away on: there are very smart people getting paid a lot of money to make/keep you hooked on them.

IMO this is as much a "we are hopelessly dumb monkeys who just want to satisfy ourselves" as as it is "there's clever monkeys who know and exploit our monkey weaknesses so they can make more money."

kowbell··on Nvidia plans heavy cuts to GPU supply in early 2026
I also don't understand common sentiment that if/when the AI bubble pops and hardware manufacturers come crawling back, we consumers are going to make manufacturers regret their decision.

Isn't the whole problem that all the manufacturers are pivoting away from consumers and toward AI? How are we going to "hurt Nvidia in the pocketbook?" Buy from their competitors? But they are also making these pivots/"turning their backs on us." Just abstain from buying hardware out of protest? As soon as prices go down there's gonna be a buying frenzy from everyone who's been waiting this whole time.

kowbell··on IBM CEO says there is 'no way' spending on AI data centers will pay off
I interpreted it as "there can only be one" which I believe is a quote from the Highlander movie; it's a "winner takes all" and that winner gets the title of "highlander."

In this situation then everyone who _isn't_ the winner will go broke -> sell off all their stuff on the cheap because they're desperate -> the winner gets all their hardware for a great deal and becomes even more powerful.

kowbell··on The Peach meme: On CRTs, pixels and signal quality (again)
Not OP but I assume "VHS Transfer" meant "transfer to a digital format" i.e. digitize. The Retrotink is a fancy "composite/component/vga-to-hdmi" box, so you can do: VCR playing a VHS -> Retrotink -> HDMI capture card -> computer saving that to a file.

You are overestimating how many people have access to a piracy nephew by a very, very large margin. And even if we all knew a privacy nephew, they're very quickly going to stop responding to incessant requests for more content. And they won't be available 24/7.

> content which is not in any way different from any other person like that?

Because their content is different enough. Getting back to the art example: everyone’s art is unique BUT you can still find other artists that are similar. Sure there will exist other models who look very nearly the same at first glance, but everybody is, in fact, unique! And even two people with nearly identical physiques may create different material. The differences may be subtle to some but very distinguishable to others.

I might just have an eye for the small differences too. I am friends with several people who take lascivious photos of themselves for fun and/or profit. I get to talk with them about it - context, lighting, angles, etc. I just dang ol’ appreciate the craft! It’s not always an attraction thing or arousal thing: the human form is gorgeous and beautiful and utterly divine and manifests in so many different shapes and sizes! And taking well-crafted photographs of any subject is an art!

And maybe that’s why I gravitate towards it - so much pornography is like junk food, but not all adult content has to be! Some of it is like a well crafted meal, featuring quality ingredients prepared well by a skilled cook :)

kowbell··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
Correct, no companionship for me — I understand this is a business and any connection is as deep as a “customer service” role at most. The relationship part is weird to me. I’m just paying because I want to see more of that person’s content specifically, and You Gotta Support The Troops™ (and by troops in this context I mean sex workers).
kowbell··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
I have subscribed. I have paid for PPV.

Why? I have disposable income and I feel good when I spend it supporting creators I like. I subscribe to several Patreons of artists and YouTube creators, I’ve got that yearly Nebula subscription locked in, I buy merch and CDs from local bands (even though I don’t really listen to them after shows), and I also will pay folks posting tantalizing stuff on the internet. Sure I can get similar things for free, but sometimes I want content from that person and I see no issue giving them a couple bucks for it. I can afford it, so why not? Why do they not deserve it when I’m willing to also sub to a Patreon for someone who makes cool digital art on Instagram?

The “para-social” aspect is icky to me. At no point do I expect that this person knows who I am or has any care for me; any time I receive messages insinuating or fishing for that I ignore them. My “relationship” to them is a consumer who enjoys their work and is willing to compensate them for it, and that “relationship” only exists for a limited amount of time every so often.

kowbell··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
May be worth noting that ProRes is entirely unrelated to “Pro” phones (and predates them by over a decade if I read correctly.)
kowbell··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I saw that and was disappointed - but then I read the fine print and it sounds like they ARE unlocked and you can switch providers freely (even while still financing)?

> take away all the devkits Epic uses to test Unreal Engine, demanding they delete the console ports of the engine, and refusing to cert any new games using Unreal Engine, forcing all their partners to license different technology and rebuild their games

I think this is a lil extreme. Even if Epic had some reason to sue the console makers, there are too many high profile and high grossing games (e.g. the next Witcher and Cyberpunk, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi series) for Sony/Microsoft to choose to completely ban Unreal. Imagine too: if one of them announces they will prohibit Unreal games, why won’t the other swallow their pride and become the console-exclusive platform for that title? Not even Apple has banned Unreal, and I can’t think of any big games on their store that use it.

kowbell··on Checkmate 19" IPS Retro Monitor
I have been considering the mod! I’ve watched a video or two about that mod but I don’t want to rush into it with CRTs all having electrical bits on them that can kill me if I do something wrong. I’m entirely new to electrical tinkering but eager to learn for this circuit bending stuff.

I’m east coast but not near NY… maybe I can justify it by renting a U-Haul van and filling it with TVs ;)

kowbell··on Checkmate 19" IPS Retro Monitor
> CRT displays of the kind we all grew up with are terrific displays, but they come with a price. They are not modern tech and as such they are expensive and difficult to maintain, like classic pinball machines or arcade games. We knew we had to come up with a better, more future proof solution going forwards

Has anyone heard of any attempts to bring back CRT’s? I imagine the manufacturing chain for that would be bigger than any reasonable kickstarter/the demand from retro enthusiasts and the like. I know I’ve been hunting for old TVs for circuit bending/glitch art and it’s tough, thrift stores nearby stopped taking old TVs and everything on Facebook Marketplace only has coax (less ideal than composite.) Ebay works but good deals get snatched up.

> What risks are you talking about? Sex isn't ever "inherently risky"

Sex is very often inherently risky. Before protection became commonplace it was almost always inherently risky.

You seemed to be disappointed in the “widespread use of contraception” in your original post - without contraception there’s even more risk.

kowbell··on Ask HN: IP cameras that don't require an app or internet?
I recently bought two Amcrest cameras (4k[1] and 1080p[2]) and did not need to download an app or make an account to set them up. Both just plugged in to a PoE cable and I was able to access them individually on my WAN by typing in their IPs as well as use them on NVR software.

Funny timing: I saw Koyaanisqatsi for the first time tonight, and there’s a section where it cuts from satellite images of a city to microchips (https://youtu.be/RSINqSvSVyM?t=402)

It made me want to look up more pics of chips, but after not getting good results searching on my own I gave up and came to HN... only to immediately see this post :)

kowbell··on Ask HN: How do you protect your children from internet addiction?
> Wouldn't it be weird if you didn't ever talk about that sleepover? Why should an iPhone be any different?

> My point is that a screen isn't a pause button on your parent-child relationship. It's an experience that the kid goes through, separately from you, and it's your duty as a parent to get back in sync again afterward.

Very well said, thank you for sharing. I’ve never considered it like that because it was never my experience, nor one I’ve seen firsthand in others... but it sounds so obvious reading it now. Makes me wish I had more of that growing up. Makes me hope I remember this when I’m a parent.

kowbell··on “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?” (2017)
The “when are we going to use this” question is about when “we” ourselves will directly use it - not when we will use something that uses it.

I don’t have to use any calculus to get a weather report, etc., because other people do that for me and give me their results - it’s part of their job.

Calculus is indispensable and is used in our everyday life - but most of us won’t use it ourselves, or need to know the specifics, or really even know the broader parts of it.
