EDIT: After rereading your comment you might have been asking if it was possible to retrieve this id with a simple API call and not with OAUTH. It is possible with "users/show" as explained here: https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/get/users/show
I don't think you are rude and you are right I haven't done a lot of hiring but I have done numerous interviews along the years and applied dozens of times. As a matter of fact I am currently applying right now.
I understand your point about the personalized response saying explicitely "you are not fit for our organization" or even more "you lack this and that". It could be opening a door to a "negociation" and lead to a lot of lost time. And when you have dozens or hundreds or applicants it really is not possible.
But this kind of response goes a long way from a simple "the position has been filled" when it has been filled, even if it is a month afterwards. This helps the candidate to understand that the company is not interested in his application anymore.
In my opinion it shows a lot from the company and does not cost "that" much of time it the process is automated (and I think it should be for the majority of cases).
I can understand a "personalized" response to be unrealistic. But at least a simple automatic e-mail saying "Thank you for applying, regretfully the position is now filled" or anything indicating "don't wait for an answer" should be the norm. Especially with a lot of large companies indicating that an answer could take up to 2 months.

Have you checked paymill's offer ? https://www.paymill.com/en-gb/documentation-3/introduction/s...
I think that's how some airbnb hosts give access to their flat without having to meet you in person. At least I've seen it advertised during my last research for an airbnb booking.
There's a bunch more on google
I always find this pretty strange. In my case I'm trying, as much as possible, to have the least possible number of things linked to my real name online. So googling for my real name will lead to nothing (or people with the same me) but not mine.
Is this really a bad habit that I should lose?
In it you can find multiple open source solutions such as Piwik (see sheff comment), snowplow (https://github.com/snowplow/snowplow) and Graphite (http://graphite.wikidot.com/start).
Hope this helps.
There also was a great question at the end asking you if there was some common traits to "detect" exceptional people to recruit and your answer was really insightful. You should consider adding it to your post or maybe dedicating a blog post to it.
In your talk you explained how you changed of roles at Songkick and it seems to be linked to finding people better than you at what you did so leaving them "in charge" of this part and taking up a new challenge. Hiring exceptional people and a good fit is hard as you described it. You have to find them and them convince them to work for you. But how do you hire someone for a role where he will be better than you at what you do and how do you convince them to take up on the offer?
Maybe I was not the only one with this problem so they decided to disable it by default?
But I also still use IRC a lot. Depending on the framework/language there's always one or two IRC channels where you'll find people who can help you or at least point you in the right direction so you should search for some good IRC channels specific to obj-C development and hang there while you code.
