kochb··on “So the silence from Facebook over the weekend is.. deafening.”
This is a great example of a link that should be off-topic for HN.

There’s not one new material fact in the linked tweet, nor does it make an attempt at fair analysis. It instead consists of hyperbole (“company ending”) and unfounded speculation (“I imagine”). It’s just not a good starting point for serious discussion of the breach.

kochb··on Napoleon Was the Best General Ever
Excluding Napoleon due to a "winning your campaigns" criteria is a bit silly. You're weighting the loss at the end of his career instead of fairly judging the win/loss record on his entire portfolio of two decades of campaigns.
kochb··on AWS icon quiz
I've always had issues telling the icons apart, but in fairness the recent UI updates have already been phasing out the icons. They're no longer on the management console home page, and they've been replaced with much improved category icons.
kochb··on TSA “Quiet Skies” surveillance program targets innocent U.S. citizens
This is a dupe of the much more thorough Boston Globe article from two days ago:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17635761

I'm not a huge fan of all the borderline off-topic political articles, but if we're going to do it, it'd be nice to choose the original source that was referenced four times. As it stands, we're not even adding anything new to the conversation.

kochb··on The tasting of surströmming
She might have been using it as a replacement for this:

kochb··on Ask HN: Are thousands of Bay Area workers going to die in a big earthquake?
The New York Times recently did an article on the topic: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/04/17/us/san-franci...

The short answer is that while a natural disaster is possible, the time frame between disastrous earthquakes is long enough for people to get by anyway. Builders do have a legal standard to follow, but whether that standard is safe enough is another question entirely.

Re insurance, many employers offer benefits packages that include basic life insurance coverage for employees, which would likely offer some compensation. YMMV.

kochb··on Avocados are wreaking havoc in Mexico
This article is pretty weak. It’s just a haphazard jumble of “drug gangs extort money from avocado farmers” and “agriculture has potentially harmful impacts on the environment” with no attempt to quantify, dig deeper, or present evidence about any of its claims. The seed of a good story is here, just no effort to perform novel reporting.
kochb··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
We're still in the early days on this, but given this video it appears that there was a hazard in the road that should have been detectable by a road safe system. In this case, the system failed to recognize a person, and they're dead.

I'm not a legal expert, but it seems plausible that this isn't going to be just a sad tragedy with no one at fault - in the near future we could see actions such as negligent homicide charges.

kochb··on What America looked like before the EPA, in photos
I hate to diss kottke also, but this specific article is the textbook definition of blogspam, and we shouldn’t excuse low quality in deference to ethos. I left out some of the other issues this has, like political advocacy over content.
kochb··on What America looked like before the EPA, in photos
Hey all, we need to go meta for a sec and talk about why this article doesn't belong here, and how culturally this is a step in the wrong direction for HN.

First off, this is blogspam, the original Popular Science article is a bit better. There's a reason blogspam is discouraged by the guidelines.

More importantly, this is a particularly pernicious blogspam because the selected photos (atlas, burning boat, water glass) mostly illustrate problems that have comparables right now. It excludes the smog and coal burning illustrated in Popular Science that do a better job at illustrating both pollution and the EPA's achievements.

These problems make this article a poor fit for Hacker News. I think we should be all sad to see such an intellectually empty article ranked this highly.

kochb··on How to dismantle a compiler bomb
Also interesting are the other compiler bomb submissions:

https://codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/69189/build-a-c...

All are short bits of code in a variety of languages that expand to massive files.

kochb··on No Evidence of Aloe Vera Found in the Aloe Vera at Wal-Mart, CVS
This isn't about substitute products, the products in question actually claimed real aloe as an ingredient.

> The products all listed aloe barbadensis leaf juice — another name for aloe vera — as either the No. 1 ingredient or No. 2 after water.

kochb··on YC Changes
Small correction, Socialcam was YC W12, not S12.
kochb··on A New Code License: The MIT, This Time with Attribution Required
Quick back story, attribution required is new in this proposal, the previous proposal did not require it leading to notable objections: http://meta.stackexchange.com/q/271080/180500

I'm very much in the "who cares, I put my code there to be used" camp, but attribution is turning out to be surprisingly divisive.

kochb··on ‘Nice’ Is a Four-Letter Word at Companies Practicing Radical Candor
> Kim Scott, an executive coach and former Google Inc. executive in online sales and operations, is writing a book about radical candor, which she defines as giving criticism while showing genuine concern.

A key point in the article, radical candor feedback may be blunt but should also be well intentioned, not merely derogatory.

kochb··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2015)
The logistics have to make sense, but we are always open to a conversation. Feel free to email us at jobs@farmlogs.com.
kochb··on The teenager who saved a man with an SS tattoo
Living in Ann Arbor, it is rather odd to hear about a protest getting violent in an otherwise open minded community that is as liberal and far left as San Francisco. Mob mentality.

Not the same context as the article, but as an example the protests can get rather fervent and loud: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3orPtIGyUw

kochb··on FarmLogs (YC W12) Nabs $10M Series B from SV Angel, Sam Altman and Others
There's a lot of us, including a few series B companies and a couple YCers: http://www.madeina2.com/
kochb··on Odell Beckham’s Helping Hands – the Tech Behind the Catch
Sounds like NFL footballs are still leather, although it's a steer hide and not pigskin: http://www.livestrong.com/article/361972-what-is-the-officia... http://www.wilson.com/en-us/football/nfl/wilson-and-the-nfl/...
kochb··on Ask HN: Where to find startup culture?
Add Ann Arbor, MI to that list. We (FarmLogs) relocated here after YC W12. It's often off the radar, but there's several Series A or later companies here[1]. University of Michigan consistently puts out great talent, and MHacks in particular is one of the nation's largest hackathons.

kochb··on Farming Startup FarmLogs (YC W12) Triples Market Share in Last Six Months
You're correct, it's 15% of row crop farms (corn, soy, wheat, etc).
kochb··on RadiumOne’s Board Is Now Deciding Whether to Dump the CEO
> Should a board remove a CEO who is convicted of domestic violence and battery? The answer seems obvious: Yes.

Aggressive violence is worthy of punishment, but a question that seems persistent recently is whether a person's personal failings should be met with professional consequences. If so, it should also be considered to which positions and for what period of time those consequences should be applied.

Either way, the answer to that question hardly seems obvious.

kochb··on Coinbase design allows for mass, targeted phishing of its users
Same logic applies, "jsmith+mnmnmnmnmnmnmn696969696969@gmail.com" then. Add a filter to discard email to that address unless it's from Coinbase. Done.
kochb··on Coinbase design allows for mass, targeted phishing of its users
Why so many accounts? You can use the "jsmith+coinbase@gmail.com" syntax to get a unique email address for each service. Two factor auth drastically frustrates an account hijack, so you're gaining almost nothing by separating them.
kochb··on Show HN: Ridiculously cheap bulk geocoding
Agreed, this is unusable for us until there's international support. We have a large percentage of international users in 130 different countries. Doesn't make sense to use this over, say, MapQuest.
kochb··on Edward Snowden, after months of NSA revelations, says his mission’s accomplished
> "Until you’ve got to pull the trigger, until you’ve had to bury your people, you don’t have a clue."

Falling to the "you don't know what it's like" argument is never a good sign. You're acting out of pain and so emotionally invested in justifying your actions that you're incapable of communicating an evidence based rationale to an outsider. You can't reach a reasoned resolution like that.
