kobigurk··on Ask HN: Share your side project
iacr.org is for cryptography-related papers, and a lot of pre-prints go there. I think a lot of them don't get to Arxiv.

Not one of the maintainers, just an avid follower :)

kobigurk··on Ask HN: Share your side project
I love this idea. How hard would it be to adapt it to eprint.iacr.org?
kobigurk··on Blender Conference 2020
As someone who is not at all involved in that community, I'd love to hear what are the pits many projects fall into and what does Blender avoid.

kobigurk··on How a coding error fueled a dispute between two condensed matter theorists
I understand the embarrassment, I am sometimes embarrassed as well looking at quickly-put-together code

I do appreciate papers that give you either a reference implementation or at least enough details on how it was done. I spent too many hours on papers that didn't trying to reproduce their claimed results...

kobigurk··on Does Peppa Pig encourage inappropriate use of primary care resources?
I wish. I don't know how to get this service in Israel, for any amount of money.
kobigurk··on Ask HN: Do you write code on the train? What's your setup?
It's my most productive coding time!

XPS 13 9360 which has great battery time and a form factor of 11" but a monitor of 13". I also have an unlimited cellular internet plan that I use for ssh and rdp. It helps that I know vim well enough that I can code adequately on a remote machine if needed.

I just ordered this week a mobile charging station so I should even have more juice.

kobigurk··on The Hunting of the SNARK – Zero-Knowledge Proofs Introduction
Indeed! zkSNARK is a more exact term for one of the technologies we utilize, but we didn't want to miss a chance to reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunting_of_the_Snark.
kobigurk··on The Hunting of the SNARK – Zero-Knowledge Proofs Introduction
Ah! It's one thing to be able to answer the question and another to show that the proposed solution is not good enough :-)

Thanks for the heads up - we should have specified this constraint about p and q.

kobigurk··on The Hunting of the SNARK – Zero-Knowledge Proofs Introduction
As part of the QED-it team - I hope you enjoy and we'd love any feedback :)
kobigurk··on Ask HN: For those programming 10+ years, what do you wish you knew 4 years in?
Enthusiasm is great, but over-working and burning out is easy to get to - so make sure you take care of yourself.

Be delivery-oriented and don't be afraid to make design mistakes - it won't be perfect on the first time anyway.

Know more than your niche, get out of your comfort zone once in a while.

Respect your co-workers - even if they make mistakes, it's OK, you will too at some point.

kobigurk··on 0.30000000000000004
I wonder if some of the examples exhibit fixed-point precision calculation, and if they do, it would be great to highlight it.
kobigurk··on Never accept a counter-offer
I don think it applies to all levels of employment. As a software developer in a team, with a junior manager, you have a lesser ability to do this demonstration. The junior manager doesn't decide your salary anyway, and this feedback loop of 2-3 hops takes too long.
kobigurk··on Ask HN: What do you use for remote access?
Oh man. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". I must understand this technology! Indeed sounds magical.
kobigurk··on Ask HN: What do you use for remote access?
I must be missing something - if the tunnel is only on the PC, and outwards it's just ipv4, how does the router know to route it back without some fkrwrding configuration?
kobigurk··on Ask HN: What do you wish someone would build?
I'd love that! Having a terminal UI for graphs too!
kobigurk··on Am I doing open source right?
I'll reiterate like almost everyone - I think you're doing extremely important work.

The bigger question is - is it what you want to do? You might be really good at what you do right now, but you may actually want to code - for various reasons that are yours.

If that's what you want, I'd first suggest - don't try to take it all at once. It's a hard task even for experienced developers. From the top of my head - a good way to get in might be writing tests. Maybe you could partner with a current developer to write tests for him and that way get a glimpse into a specific module.

If you're not into actually writing code, I'd try to understand why you feel you're not at the same level. If it's because of other people's attitudes, well, that's not good!

kobigurk··on Ask HN: Hiring at crummy wage – how to make it better?
Could you clarify something for me? How do you have budget for training that couldn't go into salary?
kobigurk··on Ask HN: Getting back to work after a brain tumour
Sorry I'm not in a position to hire. I can only wish you success.
kobigurk··on Show HN: War on Ether
- Yes, can examine and consumes gas.

- It becomes your tile.

- You can move only "life tiles", those with an asteriks, the 5 you have been allocated.

- Limited by the gas you have been allocated at this round. Careful, though, if you exceed the amount of gas allocated, your actions are reverted. 10 rounds is more of an example. An actual game would have more I believe.

- Test chain indeed. No money involved.

kobigurk··on Show HN: War on Ether
Interesting. I'll admit, my original goal was that the bots' code could also be overwritten by others, but that's not possible per the spec:

9.4.3. Jump Destination Validity. We previously used D as the function to determine the set of valid jump destinations given the code that is being run. We define this as any position in the code occupied by a JUMPDEST instruction. All such positions must be on valid instruction boundaries, rather than sitting in the data portion of PUSH operations and must appear within the explicitly defined portion of the code (rather than in the implicitly defined STOP operations that trail it).

I didn't consider implementing another spec though. Theoretically, should be possible, but I'll have to think about it some more!

kobigurk··on Show HN: War on Ether
Heh. Good point.
kobigurk··on Show HN: War on Ether
There's some prerequisite of knowing how Ethereum works and how to work with smart contracts at this point. There's room for more explanations for the public which is not that involved in Ethereum.
