knuthsat··on The Colorado River is shrinking
There was also a segment on water usage in Cowspiracy for California I think.

Water usage in industry is massive. Individuals aren't to blame and shouldn't take any part of the burden. Similarily, CO2.

knuthsat··on EU plans to make Bitcoin transfers more traceable
Monero is completely private.

Confidential transactions combined with bulletproofs [0] are an efficient way to deal with the added privacy.

You cannot see who sent you the amount. Blockchain is fully encrypted and you cannot see any amounts or transaction sender/receiver.

From looking at the code, Bash looks pretty clean.

I also use Bash and AWK for preprocessing a lot.

knuthsat··on Vboxsf fixes for 5.14-1
Interesting. Previously I had to run the mounting command manually ever since I remember trying to mount an NTFS drive.

It's read only.

knuthsat··on Vboxsf fixes for 5.14-1
I have no idea if I did something, but after MacOS 11 upgrade it seems to automatically mount my NTFS drive.

I do know that FUSE MacOS stuff seems to be disabled in brew.

knuthsat··on Tesseract OCR
I know that tesseract uses leptonica which does have capabilities of binarization and thresholding. Interesting that it's not enough.
knuthsat··on I'm a Frito-Lay Factory Worker. I Work 12-Hour Days, 7 Days a Week
I was comparing hard working Madeira to other places with year long tourism.

There, for some reason, culturally, they decided to work really hard all year.

I was talking to a hard working cab driver and told him about seasonal tourism in Croatia (tourist season lasts about 5 months) and he couldn't believe me that for the rest of the year a bunch of people do not work at all.

knuthsat··on I'm a Frito-Lay Factory Worker. I Work 12-Hour Days, 7 Days a Week
Anyone knows why people decide to do this kind of time consuming work? Is the world getting hard enough that there is no alternative?

Whenever I see people working really hard in other parts of the world, especially when the country is filled with other opportunities, I always wonder is it just everyone else that is raising the bar and now the standard is very time consuming work.

For example, there's year long tourism on Madeira. Everyone there is working hard all year long, charging for tourist services very cheaply. Yet there are many examples of places with year long tourism, but you can still find mass closures during siesta.

Everyone, through culture, decided not to overwork and there's no one "hard-working" enough to have their business open during siesta. No employee will agree to work during siesta, similarly employers do not expect their business to be open.

It has been a dream of mine to go to sleep and wake up in a new country. This would be my only use case. Living in Europe, I do not find the commute time to be horrible (around 15 minutes anywhere I go).
knuthsat··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
It is definitely a step in the right direction, but given the current demand the development is too slow.

Just look at China, with ~50 nuclear plants (just 5% of energy production), while they have thousands of coal plants. It's practically impossible that they can shift to a reusable carbon-neutral energy production methods.

Also, China can build a hundred coal plants in a year, but there's no way it can do that with nuclear.

The realistic picture is that growth cannot be sustained and there will be dire consequences due to other factors too.

(climate change, migration, wet bulb temperatures, crop failures, people being too good at capitalism, etc.)

knuthsat··on Eurosystem launches digital euro project
If a wallet is issued by government and you are the only one that can see the amounts, then government can ask for a view key with which they can confirm your balance.

This way there’s no way for anyone to store digital euros outside of government issued wallets.

I guess you could also do zero knowledge proofs to allow more privacy preserving queries compared to a view key.

But currently it is certainly possible to keep amounts and transactions private while at the same time have mechanism where a third party can inspect the true details but not require privacy preserving keys.

knuthsat··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Of course, but then you have living examples like Bob Dylan. Some people have incredible pattern matching abilities and most artists I’ve met consume as much human culture as possible and great ones manage to conjure up something of their own.

It’s such a shame that the rule makers do not see that if the system does not benefit the majority then they will be desperate enough to expand the rule set with violent acts and ultimately bring it down.

French Revolution is definitely a display of lack of freedom followed by the rule of absolute power.

knuthsat··on Why is standing more tiring than walking? [audio]
I’m skeptical. When I lay down and not think I fall asleep. If I have to think hard and work I’m pretty sure something is keeping me awake but I’m not sure if it’s good for my health.

I think similar thing happens to a degree when sitting.

knuthsat··on Organic and regenerative agriculture are revitalizing rural Montana economies
Well, I did not say that ruminants aren't a part of regenerative agriculture. There's just not that many to support the current meat consumption levels.

If you're going to grow ruminants just on grass, it takes a lot of time and land to eventually sell the meat compared to what's happening now.

We could argue that a reduction from 100+ kg to 4-30kg of meat per capita per year could be supported this way but I have no idea.

knuthsat··on Handwriting is better than typing when learning a new language, study finds
Interesting. I definitely noticed the same issue with my English.

My mother tongue Croatian had a reconstruction of the alphabet in the 19th century and these kinds of issues never appear. The orthography is phonemic almost. So the word you think matches to each tap when thinking of how it sounds.

knuthsat··on Organic and regenerative agriculture are revitalizing rural Montana economies
There's really not that much meat in regenerative agriculture. Given the current per capita consumption of meat in kg, a regenerative ag operation could never accomplish that.

Reducing to 4-30kg of meat per capita per year seems impossible.

No one can even accomplish that with ruminants. That's why there's so much chicken everywhere, because accomplishing that with ruminants is near impossible, so chicken is advertised massively instead.

A nitpick, there's no single food that is great for human health or bad for human health. Diet can contain various things and be healthy and it can also lack meat and be healthy.

knuthsat··on Nuclear Energy Will Not Be the Solution to Climate Change
AFAIK renewables from physical standpoint do not cut it when it comes to our ever increasing energy needs. Needs too much surface area for solar. Wind just seems unreliable.

Solar is as magical as nuclear plants are. It’s really sad that nuclear plants take so long to build.

knuthsat··on We don't really need to take 10k steps a day for health
If walking takes a toll on your body you should consider adding strength exercises (push-ups until they become easy, then bench press, bodyweight squats until they become easy then weighted squats, deadlifts etc.).

I also experienced hip pain and knee pain from walking and I no longer have any pain (after getting stronger) even when walking 30km per day during my active vacations.

knuthsat··on I Tricked Myself into Liking Running
It depends on what kind of adaptation you want.

I personally view cardio as just a means to improve my cardiovascular system, not muscles. So I just do boring steady-state (where I can easily rap out a song or sing Bob Dylan's lyrics).

If I want increased mitochondria and the size of the muscle cells, then nothing beats an even more efficient method of strength training. Just 5 minutes of work (1 minute per set) of lifting a heavy weight for 5 times. But even here there's concept of RPE where you don't accumulate as much fatigue as you might think.

I first did strength training and my resting heart beat dropped from 75 to 60 after about 8 months. After that I started doing steady-state cardio of 30 minutes on rest days and it's now at 55 after 3 years.

I guess the problem is that most users that play with an engine don't play bullet/blitz.

I do meet a lot of engine players on 3 minute blitz but then I just do very fast bullet moves and all of a sudden I'm losing with a 90 second advantage that cannot be recovered if the user persists on playing with an engine.

knuthsat··on Wav2vec Overview: Semi and Unsupervised Speech Recognition
I always wonder how people figure out these successful gigantic models if it takes hundreds of TPUs and days to train them.

I recently bought rtx 3090 in hopes of playing around with some computer vision applications but I guess having 24GB VRAM is nothing if I want to get something SOTA working.

knuthsat··on Teaching Machines: the history of personalized learning
I find all mainstream attempts lacking. I feel as if the app is optimizing by AB tests across the whole population instead of trying to find a proper descriptor of my learning behavior and influencing the teaching actions according to that.

For example, Duolingo transformed into a tapping app where spaced repetition took a backseat and learners are incentivized to tap the same lesson until the badge tells them they know the lesson. The lessons are skewed towards the easier target->source questions because the population finds source->target too hard.

So the app becomes extremely useless to me but I guess useful for the masses.

This is too b&w. Does a meat eater not care about the environment or the animals?

Mining crypto does not mean you do not care about the environment. Heck, we all live in 1st world cities that are giant wastes of energy, we spend massive amounts of energy traveling.

knuthsat··on The Siberian unicorn lived at the same time as modern humans (2018)
Another thing that I observe is the insane amount of land animals that look beautiful.

Compared to sea animals where, I would say, a majority looks quite disgusting or they have some features that are not appealing to the human eye.

Humans have not only forced some animals to extinction but they have probably killed animals that they found less appealing.
