knoke··on A rudimentary quantum network link between Dutch cities
As far as In understand it (not very much) you can listen in on the transmitted keys, but the interaction can be statistically(!) measured and suspicious bits can me omitted (the wiki is quite comprehensible: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_key_distribution?wprov...). There are different protocols, some more and some less quantum and most rely on classical, encrypted channels and trusted nodes in addition to the quantum channels.

One thing is for sure: you can’t send information faster than light with this or any other kind of quantum communication as two entangled qubits are basically two RNGs that are correlated. You’d just get noise without an additional classical, not FTL, data link (please, somebody with expertise: help!)

knoke··on When something that was working, suddenly doesn't work when demoing to others
As already said: Vorführeffekt is neutral and could mean both: success and failure. But the opposite of „a performance with an opposite than expected outcome“ is something that comes out exactly as it’s supposed to be without intervention, right? ;)
knoke··on When something that was working, suddenly doesn't work when demoing to others
Self-fulfilling prophecy?
knoke··on When something that was working, suddenly doesn't work when demoing to others
One should note: In contrast to other such composites, this is often used in everyday life.
knoke··on ‘Mind-boggling’ sea creature identified as digenean trematode
The author mentioned it in the text, but Carl Zimmer‘s Parasitus Rex is is a good, horrifying read.
knoke··on What is an emotion? William James’s theory of how our bodies affect our feelings
I think you would make great strides in thinking about this if you differentiated between feelings and emotions, one being pretty primitive, bodily inner states and the other outward directed, complex scripts that’s are deeply social, learned and performed and shared ways to communicate feelings (take all the different ways for example “anger”, “mourning” or “lust” are performed with totally different modes of articulation and performance between cultures, times and locations. That is: mourning is not a feeling, it’s a complex, socially learned (socialized) script that is performed in a socially expected way, that is rooted in feelings but solved a communicative, social task.

(I know nothing about this topic expect for one book about the socialization of emotions that I read a million years ago).

knoke··on Greg Bear has died
Blood Music is a quick read that escalated even quicker. I loved Forge of God and even more so it’s successor Anvil of the Stars.
knoke··on The Mod Archive
Also for me tracker music has an incredible and unique emotional power. My guess is that it was mostly written by teenagers and you can just feel that energy and naivety. Elwood tracks make me happy and happy-sad in a way nothing else can. It’s incredibly comforting and at the same time energising music for me.
knoke··on The Mod Archive
For iOS users I cannot recommend enough the 4champ mod player with radio and total archive access. (But of course you’ll just download everything by Elwood and listen to that for the rest of your lives.) https://apps.apple.com/app/id578311010

knoke··on Researchers Pinpoint Reason Infants Die from SIDS
Sorry: for each of the 67 there are 10 controls.

„ Results for each of 67 sudden unexpected deaths classified by the coroner (aged 1 week-104 weeks) = Cases, were compared to 10 date of birth - and gender-matched surviving controls (Controls), with five cases reclassified to meet criteria for SIDS, including the criterion of age 3 weeks to 1 year.“

knoke··on Researchers Pinpoint Reason Infants Die from SIDS
N=67, Control=10 :/
knoke··on The medieval habit of ‘two sleeps’
Much (muuuch) more on this in Craig Koslofsky’s ridiculously interesting “Evening’s Empire”:

https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/evenings-empire/9CB4189...

How we turned night into day. And basically a story how technology really went hand in hand with a social revolution.

knoke··on Yamaha DX7 Technical Analysis
How is it possible that no one here mentions Korg‘s wundermachine Volca FM, a tiny DX7 compatible, Dexed/KQ Dixie controllable and cheap midi synth with endless possibilities?
knoke··on Renoise – A DAW with a tracker-like interface
I’d suggest to view this super interesting presentation dir open source music https://youtu.be/dRM7wkMBSHY

Trackers might seem nostalgic, or as a quirky alternative. But they are also a forgotten was of dealing with musical pieces as a whole: everything a Musical piece is including notation, sound, performance and editability of all the parts and their whole.

knoke··on Facebook is gambling Australia can't do without it. What if we prove them wrong
KaoruAoiShiho said "blue" was a nickname for the main facebook app "in SV circles" and probably meant: Silicon Valley Circles.

But now that I think of this I wish it was something more technical... [edit:typo]

knoke··on Facebook is gambling Australia can't do without it. What if we prove them wrong
I used "Blue" to criticise myself for not severing all ties to Facebook (I still use Instagram and WhatsApp) but just from Facebook, the social network (=blue). But I want to firmly distance myself from any SV circles! ;)
knoke··on Facebook is gambling Australia can't do without it. What if we prove them wrong
I didn't elaborate on this. But this is what I meant when I pointed out my possible privilege. I don't want to condemn people who use it; and it might indeed be a very good communication tool for many people. I know how WhatsApp has changed my elder relatives' way of communicating and I can't imagine that anything else but Facebook's power to create size effects did this...

But I'm very sure that it doesn't need Facebook to do this right. It could be anything else.

knoke··on Facebook is gambling Australia can't do without it. What if we prove them wrong
I'm not sure if what a single person experiences fits a societal impact, and I don't know if it is privileged thinking. But when I quit Facebook (FB Blue) it was almost ridiculous how easy it was and how little of an actually recognisable impact it had on my life (but that might be the privilege speaking). From the psychological routines to the social norms: I basically forgot that it existed within a couple of days.

I imagine this to be a more universal thing: It is impossible to imagine a live without Facebook. But it has been basically impossible to imagine a live with Facebook before there was any and just as quickly you will forget how inevitable and necessary it felt while it was there – once it loses its role. And I hope that this applies not only to individuals but also to societies.

I guess we will find out in the near future to just how many things this principle applies, for example petrol fuels, casual international flights and video platforms. Quitting Facebook Blue has shown me that to unlearn something is just as easy as it is to learn it. This is not nicotine or alcohol. This is just a mode of doing something you do anyways.

knoke··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
With BTT and GoldenChaos you can swipe anywhere on the Touchbar with two fingers to change the volume, and with three fingers to change the brightness of the display.
knoke··on Wind and solar are cheaper than thought, admits UK government
Even worse with fusion: huge plants (10 GW) that need to run constantly with high power output to remain hardly economical that can’t be buffered with anything else than other fusion plants nearby. My guess: fusion plants will be built for single applications with crazy power usage where downtime doesn’t hurt too much. Errrm, accelerating spaceships?
knoke··on Wind and solar are cheaper than thought, admits UK government
I really, really recommend reading the Bundesnetzagentur‘s reasoning for its preferred market structure of the energy grids. They have long time goal (building resilient and performativ smart markets and grids) that explain a bit how some perceived inconsistencies (or pains) are necessary from their point of view. (I don’t dare to judge if they are right or not). For example: https://www.bundesnetzagentur.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/Sac...

But also some of their market and grid reports. It is really interesting, especially from a geeky perspective.

knoke··on SpaceX, Blue Origin, Dynetics win contracts to land astronauts on moon
This question might be a bit naive, but could someone explain to me if the SpaceX illustration (https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/styles/full_width/p...) is feasible at all? From the (many, oh, so many) hours of KSP I've played landing legs seem to be the way to go with an uneven and uncertain and especially slightly sloped landing surface and not a flat rocket underside. Or is there any explanation how Space Ships are supposed to land? Thanks Thanks
knoke··on Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo
I used it to quickly get from close to zero to an A1 level - which enabled me to directly take an A2 levels course - instead of getting bored of a too easy one too quickly.

At least it saved me a hundred euros, but it's not a substitute for a real course and real interactions.

But later it talks helped in using more esoteric grammar that I never hear in small talk.

I'd suggest to use the website from time to time as it has some well done explanation to what is grammatically going on (the app is theory free)

knoke··on Microsoft introduces Windows 10 X for dual-screen devices
I started seeing the TB as a missed opportunity for a second screen but with the Golden Chaos touchbar replacement (a preset for Better Touch Tools) I see it as my computer's Apple Watch

The touchbar is totally under-utilized by Apple. Golden Chaos demonstrates that it just needs a new and appropriate sign language and immediately gets much more useful.

With Golden Chaos I use my touchbar to see my current email count, whats playing plus media controls, calender, time, weather, battery – and if I press a modifier key a whole universe of shortcuts opens up. My only addition - and the most heavily used function - is a button to push my current window to the other monitor. So my touchbar effectively is my tool to utilize my second screen more easily.

knoke··on GoldenChaos is the only Touch Bar replacement you will ever need
GoldenChaos is a preset for Better Touch Tool that completely rethinks what the Touch Bar can do.

Its context sensitive, adds multi touch gestures, haptic feedback and – because it is a BTT-preset – is completely customisable and expandable. I added a button to push a window to my secondary screen, for example.

But I'd install it just for being able to change the volume by sliding two fingers and to change the display brightness by sliding three fingers over the Touch Bar. It really changed the way I think about piece of tech that once was useless for me.

knoke··on How I became friends with an octopus
Just a tangent, but it might make your life easier (and other being's lives, too): You get B12s not only from meat, fish, eggs and milk but also from fermented food like sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, kombucha, some seaweeds and fermented tea.
knoke··on Publishers Haven't Realized How Big a Deal GDPR Is
That's exactly one of the things that might happen with the ePrivacy Regulation: "By centralising the consent in software such as internet browsers and prompting users to choose their privacy settings and expanding the exceptions to the cookie consent rule, a significant proportion of businesses would be able to do away with cookie banners and notices, thus leading to potentially significant cost savings and simplification."

knoke··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
that is interesting! I'm very curious about the more :)
knoke··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
I'd love to understand what you expect to find (given that you might have some special insight into credit scoring). I'd guess that the "algorithm" could be an embarrassingly simple sum of thumbs up/down for a handful of items. Like: If a person lives in a thumbsup/thumbsdown/nothumbs neighborhood etc.
