knob··on FTC action against Harley-Davidson and Westinghouse for limiting right to repair
Sorry but... facts: what do you mean by "how the oiler works"? What oiler? Did you buy a 1950s Harley?

The three oils? Yes, that's a Harley. That's what they have: three oil pans, all separate. If you do not want that, do not buy a Harley.

If another system / design is better engineering doesn't come to the table. Harley-Davidson is upfront in: three oils. If you want a Harley, you get three oils (unleas you get a Vrod, or a Sportster, or one of the new Pan America or Sportsters with the new Revolution Max motor).

knob··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
I love that you used anti-fragility correctly! =)
knob··on Remembering Apple’s Newton, 30 years on
Love this!

I have my original Apple Newton stores in my closet. This was from when I was 13-15-ish years old??

Yet I have always believed that the iPhone was "corporate karma" for Apple. The Newton did not make a splash, yet they homeruned with the iPhone. Of course, their hardwork and culture was the reason... yet still like calling it karma.

knob··on Things I’d want to see improved in WordPress core
Absolutely love Laravel!!
knob··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
Those are good observations. I'm going to apply these in my work. I like the above/below concept a lot.
knob··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
Here is my upvote. Although your post is "rough", the truth is quite often as such. Thanks for putting it out there.
knob··on LogJ4 Security Inquiry – Response Required
This analysis is beautiful. Thank you for doing the math! :-)
knob··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
Ditto.

I'm a satisfied Fastmail paying user for years

knob··on Ask HN: Have you found something you love to do? If yes how?
Not sure it will "solve it"... yet following Adam's (Douglas?) suggestion to become top-25% in three fields. Then merge those fields.

That has worked awesome for me. I merged technolgy (software dev/sys adm) with motor sports and with management. Love it so far. Good luck and Merry Christmas!!

knob··on A Farewell to LWN
Much thanks for all the work done through these decades. LWN rocks!
knob··on Why the Fuck Do You Trust Harvard?
Wow what an angry write up.
knob··on Chrome users beware: Manifest v3 is deceitful and threatening
I despise Chrome.

Yet I oppose your suggestion. Lets be above that.

knob··on Robert Bly has died
Thank you for this! I posted elsewhere that I've enjoyed the Iron John book many times over. Your post is yet more information about it.

Thank you for taking the time to type it up!

knob··on Robert Bly has died
His work is awesome. I have heard his Iron John audio over a dozen times.

Good stuff he put out there for all of us!

knob··on Open Source Vibrotactile Haptics Platform for On-Body Applications
This would be a great building block for a system that helps blind people navigate while walking.
knob··on Crews are abandoned on ships in record numbers without pay, food or a way home
Bullshit. Who in their right mind considers the US separated like that?
knob··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
Exactly. Thanks for writing it out.
knob··on Why Firefox has been in decline for 12 years
One year ago they launched their new Android version, which is godawful. Just read the reviews on the android store.

Why Firefox, why?!

knob··on Atlantic Ocean currents weaken, signalling big weather changes: study
You have a source on this?
knob··on Open Terms Archive – Follow changes to terms of service
Same! I am happy somebody built this.

What I would add to this project is a highlight/alert of Warrant Canaries.

If the Warrant Canarie changes an alert can be brought up.

knob··on RTL: WTF: Read the web like Right-to-Left readers do
What I do in my Debian machines is flip horizontally each display on xfce startup, and then flip the trackball x-axis.

Everything comes out nicely right to left.

knob··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
> an on-demand criminal.

Wow. What a phrase.

knob··on Collabora Office: The enterprise-ready edition of LibreOffice
We've been using the free version of Collabora Office for about 11 months now. (This version is called CODE).

They won't do under-20 count licensing. If your org/corp is under 20-count, just use it.

So far, it has been 98% perfect. One or two hiccups, yet: we own our data, in our Debian servers. Android app works awesome. Browser works awesome.

Give it a go if you want.

knob··on 31.2˝ Color EPaper Display
I actually enjoyed the clarification. Thanks for posting.
knob··on Mystery of interstellar visitor 'Oumuamua gets trickier
That reminds me of the books We Are Legion, We Are Bob.

I really enjoyed those!

knob··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
Try this: old.reddit.com/r/$foo

A little bit cleaner.

knob··on My years working on black programs
That was an awesome read. Thanks for sharing!
knob··on Employer health plans are getting pricier and skimpier
Sharing this idea in order to gather critique. The cost of healthcare in the USA is insane. Could we look for insight into the US Military? Example: This morning, a coworker told me she's going to have an operation on her back. The "cost of the tray" (I have no idea what this is) is $14,000. She has to pay $8,000 up-front two days before the operation, and the remainder will be financed over two years.

To me, it's insane to think the US Military pays $14,000 for this same operation in US Veterans' hospitals. Why don't we look into the military to see how they're doing it?

Or am I completely off-base here? Thoughts?

knob··on Being ‘Indistractable’
Eliminate all notifications from your phone with a 1-second 'empty' .mp3

I set this empty.mp3 as my notification (android) for emails, texts, applications, etc etc. The only thing that makes a sound in my phone is phone-calls and alarms. Eliminate the "top bar" notifications too. If you want to find out about emails, open the app. To find out about instant messages, open the app.

For me this has been absolutely great. I don't have social media installed (reddit, facebook, twitter, etc), so that helps.

Yet the phone doesn't "suck me into it". I hope somebody finds this useful!
