knifie_spoonie··on 3D-Printed Dune Chess Set
I think the parent commenter did read that and their concern is that tournament chess has a touch-move rule (if you touch a piece you have to move it).

This set is certainly a cool art piece, but not particularly functional if a player has trouble distinguishing pieces visually.

The queen looks like a slightly larger version of the bishop (or is that the knight?), I could see someone confusing them if they're sitting at different levels.

I'm one of those people :)

My use case is running Android apps on my Surface Pro instead of having to buy a separate tablet. It works great for my purposes.

knifie_spoonie··on We're forking Flutter
I've not found this to be the case at all. They only seem to care whether the app does what they want or not.

Granted this is my personal experience, I can't say this is the case for every single user out there.

knifie_spoonie··on We're forking Flutter
> Of course, I recognise that, a. most people just don’t care about platform idioms

This is the big one. HN commenters are not representative of the average user. You'd have to specifically point out the differences for them to even notice, and even then they simply don't care.

knifie_spoonie··on We're forking Flutter
I'm really curious what the specific tells are. Do you have any specific examples?

When using the apps on my iPhone, I just don't see how I could tell the difference.

I'm not so sure about that.

All the people I know who are on those for-life medications absolutely hate the fact that they have to keep taking those pills every day until they die.

> Humans don't limit aircraft speed

Maybe not cruising speed, but maneuvering performance certainly is limited. This article from the US Naval Institute says outright "The greatest limiting factor in military combat aircraft is the pilot".

knifie_spoonie··on VCs aren’t your friends
Fair point. If that's the signal who the people financing the VC believe in, then I guess it makes sense them to follow along.
knifie_spoonie··on VCs aren’t your friends
> other VCs have already passed

Is this really a sensible factor to consider? Canva's was founder was rejected 100 times before someone took a chance.

Is there any hard evidence that founders who secure funding earlier are more likely to provide a VC with a successful exit?

knifie_spoonie··on Google Quantum AI
I'd really like to see just one example a useful problem that a quantum computer can solve and which classical computers can't.

And I'll qualify that as a real quantum computer which exists in physical form today, not something theoretical in someone's research paper.

knifie_spoonie··on Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air
Since when did we start apologizing for people in positions of authority forcing others to bad things?
knifie_spoonie··on Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air
"If I don't rob the bank, someone else will!"

Or maybe we stop people from trying to force others to rob banks. Nip the problem in the bud.

Why do you want to let managers get away with toxic behavior and then blame the subordinates?

knifie_spoonie··on Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air
Crazy idea, but maybe the manager trying to force engineers to do these things should be held accountable.
knifie_spoonie··on Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air
Managers are the ones with the authority to tell engineers what to do. If an engineer refuses, they'll simply be replaced with someone more pliable.

See the Challenger disaster for a high profile example.

knifie_spoonie··on Flutter seems to be having bad times internally
I've gone all-in on Flutter for mobile development, and have quite a lot invested in it. I'm sure quite a lot of other people have.

If Google sunsets it, I'll be so pissed off. I'll never trust anything else coming from them again.
