knifie_spoonie··on Ask HN: Quality of recent gens of Dell/Lenovo laptops worse than 10 years ago?
I'm curious which devices did you need to replace the port on?

I've had to replace a few cables, but have never had issues with USB-C sockets.

knifie_spoonie··on The modern homes hidden inside ancient ruins
It's interesting how different people's perception of what is ancient or not.

From the title I was assuming something around about 0 BCE, but it turns out to be a 17th century factory.

knifie_spoonie··on Show HN: Flutter_compositions: Vue-inspired reactive building blocks for Flutter
Why not? I'm a Flutter dev, and this might actually be useful for me.
knifie_spoonie··on People with blindness can read again after retinal implant and special glasses
Wearing sunglasses apparently helps. You just need to make sure they have a proper UV rating, a lot of the cheap ones you get online don't do a good job of blocking UV.
knifie_spoonie··on What happened to Apple's legendary attention to detail?
I get that too. I was wondering if it was just me.
knifie_spoonie··on Uncle Sam shouldn't own Intel stock
It was Bush who signed the bailout bill, not Obama.
knifie_spoonie··on Y Combinator files brief supporting Epic Games, says store fees stifle startups
Developers getting paid better is a good thing, surely?
knifie_spoonie··on Texas Instruments’ new plants where Apple will make iPhone chips
I don't think they're referring at all to any similarities in how they're produced.

It's more to do with similarities in the consequences of not have any local supply in times of emergency.

knifie_spoonie··on Indian Sign Painting: A typeface designer's take on the craft
Do you have any links that we can check out? I'm curious to see what they look like now.
knifie_spoonie··on Intel CEO Letter to Employees
You left out the best part at the end "...before tape-out"

So, he's going to wait until the tape out stage of a major new chip design before he reviews it? Bold move.

knifie_spoonie··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
Commercial aircraft pilots are also much better trained than car drivers.
knifie_spoonie··on Australians to face age checks from search engines
Education.

I really wish all this time, effort, and money was spent on educating our kids to safely navigate the online world.

It's not like they'll magically figure it out for themselves once they turn 17.

knifie_spoonie··on Touching the back wall of the Apple store
Just to be clear, you never actually spoke to one of the staff and said you'd like to purchase something?
knifie_spoonie··on Air India flight to London crashes in Ahmedabad with more than 240 onboard
Indeed. There were survivors from that horrific Korean flight that crashed into the concrete wall.
knifie_spoonie··on CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe
Probably, but I doubt there'd be much flavour
knifie_spoonie··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
I've driven many cars over the years. Not once has a vent ever broken.

Which cars are you driving where they break often?

knifie_spoonie··on Oracle engineers caused five days software outage at U.S. hospitals
I was at Uni in Australia well before Oracle bought Sun. Java was used quite extensively then too.
knifie_spoonie··on Recall going back into Windows
Not at the operating system level, but there is a Mac app called ScreenMemory which does mostly the same thing.

I used to use it as a convenient way to find websites that I had read something about in the recent past but couldn't remember exactly where.

I mainly stopped using it because it was causing performance problems.

knifie_spoonie··on US Marines to get high-speed, radar-evading electric seagliders for rescue ops
I'm guessing modern sensors and fly-by-wire systems might at least handle the last part.
knifie_spoonie··on What to Do
> With his multiple endorsements of MAGA

Do you have a source for this that I can read up on?

knifie_spoonie··on MacBook Air M4
No way you're getting that light weight with metal
knifie_spoonie··on Comparing Fuchsia components and Linux containers [video]
Thanks for the info. For those of us not familiar with it, what were the main motivations for building Fuchsia instead of just using Linux?
knifie_spoonie··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
Interesting. Could you post a link to the dongle?
knifie_spoonie··on We're bringing Pebble back
I'm curious why you're saying it's less hackable?

I've written my own little app for my Garmin watch, and I didn't need to get permission from them or pay them anything.

knifie_spoonie··on People are bad at reporting what they eat. That's a problem for dietary research
It's the same in Australia as well. I'm a bit shocked that the US doesn't have this.
knifie_spoonie··on Ships must practice celestial navigation
The US government can apparently turn off their GPS signals over certain parts of the world:

knifie_spoonie··on Salesforce will hire no more software engineers in 2025, says Marc Benioff
Unless I'm missing something, there's also been no innovation in their product at all. A company can only coast for so long.
knifie_spoonie··on Why was there a wall near runway at S Korea plane crash airport?
Except this dangerous obstacle did not need to be there. It could and should have been mounted on frangible posts, not on solid concrete.
knifie_spoonie··on Blackmagic Debuts $30K 3D Camera for Capturing Video for Vision Pro
Did you accidentally type an extra 1 there? The original Macintosh launched at $2.5K which is a bit over $7K in today's dollars.
knifie_spoonie··on Blackmagic Debuts $30K 3D Camera for Capturing Video for Vision Pro
Definitely a rolling shutter. I think no word on the readout speed yet, but I've seen 12ms quoted for the 12K LF sensor.
