klingoff··on Passwords have problems, but passkeys have more
The relying party not being able to assume the user can take one secret with them is a feature that comes with a cost.. The lack of a reference correct relying party library in each language is a reason that cost is too high.
klingoff··on Why OpenStack and Kata Containers are both seeing a resurgence of adoption
So, its not impossible to move clouds, it's just better to buy a smaller bank on the other cloud if you want the move to actually succeed.
klingoff··on Malaysia started mandating ISPs to redirect DNS queries to local servers
If we make sure clients support proxies what are they going to do about all the proxies that may allow the DoH server list and may be the only way to do something else?
klingoff··on Intent to unship: HTTP/2 Push
You mean implementing or criticizing? A day late and a dollar short seems like the better idiom for most HTTP features implemented at this stage.
klingoff··on Rust in Linux lead retires rather than deal with more "nontechnical nonsense"
Google and a bunch of bounties worry about the security of malloc for their browser, some intern worries about the security of the enterprise server.

Nah, an IDE was already a hell of a drug for the first levels of formalism in paradigms.. The most formal language is going to end up with a lot of transpiled code made in a combat between AI and features like a borrow checker, then once their eyes stop bleeding, the most stubborn will make it marginally better than any less formal language can achieve, then others will be able to work with just eye drops.
klingoff··on The Threat to OpenAI
With OpenAI's valuation and current interest rates, I don't really understand why they aren't visibly under pressure to show there's a lot of price tolerance, and until they attempt it, no one will see how quickly those model migrations get prioritized and completed.
klingoff··on Researchers find Alzheimer's-like brain changes in long Covid patients
Sure, but depression and immune system seem to be linked, so how do we know we aren't just more clearly separating viral components in boughts of heightened depression?

Personally I think our relationship with flu tells us a lot about the difference between our claimed ideals and our actual behavior as a society. We didn't want to know anything about it for curiosities sake and we invented all sorts of higher priorities to not study the mundane diseases between pandemics.

klingoff··on I will f(l)ail at your tech interviews, here's why you should care
The vast majority of choices are between things that are roughly on par with each other if used by people with similar experience in them, respectively.. But then you don't have shared experience for when someone is on vacation if everyone is doing the better way in their opinion, or you lose a ton of time on the arguments to choose the best way when it doesn't matter, retrain the majority on the least experienced engineers suggestion as they can offer no negative critiques of their solution, etc.

Very tolerant senior engineers are basically what you want, opinionated juniors are who apply to senior roles and make people seek out juniors who apply to junior roles.

klingoff··on The Future of TLA+ [pdf]
> If there was a future, like a goal or a roadmap or something, it would be outlined

Where is the outline for English? French has a more structured oversight with organizations and goals, so it will beat English?

klingoff··on The slow evaporation of the free/open source surplus
That's important in literature in a way.. But does it matter to the economy if POSIX were created as it is or if some OS slush fund created a different computing model obsessed with some other primitve besides the file?

In our values a lot of literature is valuable because of how it came about. If Shakespeare never existed and someone wrote like him today we would just lock them up.

klingoff··on Los Angeles is in a 4-year sprint to deliver a car-free 2028 Olympics
Sounds nice to have the DoE to kick around given that no one will pay out for the long commute's cancer, cardiovascular disease and mortality.
klingoff··on A $10k stipend is available for anyone moving to Cumberland, MD
They sound about the same, but "2 Hours to Dulles" would be the better name for the M Night Shyamalan movie.
klingoff··on A $10k stipend is available for anyone moving to Cumberland, MD
Offering $10-20k to move somewhere that doesn't have jobs isn't going to build a labor market. Retirees and remote workers can decide to live in a labor nowhere to stretch their house buying power, lower cost of living, etc.
klingoff··on Why Ed-Tech Startups Don't Scale (2022)
Horrendous educational products are probably better than every institution in some regions, the median community college in other regions, etc..

Academic institutions, even very poor ones, have a lot of local leverage through employing academics who are integrated in the community and that is largely lost in distance education.

If you go and try to make an awful school somewhere I think you will get a great deal of assistance compared to if you offer a much better online education to the area built somewhere else.

klingoff··on Elon Musk was just forced to reveal who owns X. Here's the list
IMO it was a pretty good gamble. Even if his mental decline seemed obvious, it wasn't obvious they would be prying X from his cold dead hands at all or nearly this late.
klingoff··on BMW Overtakes Tesla in European EV Sales for First Time
Right, the useful number instead of a comparison between cars sold to the European public and cars sold at the location as a matter of the logistical accident that it is the head quarters of the manufacturer.
klingoff··on Ex-bank CEO gets 24 years after falling for crypto scam, causing bank collapse
I'm curious how many days of treasury level interest on $47 million would amount to more than the average amount taken by a convicted embezzler.
