klhutchins··on Lawyer cites fake witnesses in murder case and blames ChatGPT
This is just like Wikipedia from a few years back. People were citing Wikipedia instead of the original sources. After a few more of these humiliations, people will learn how to use the tool and verify actual judgments. Hopefully.

Then with enough leaving the market, they will become a rare collectable, to bring the price back up in a few (or many) years.
klhutchins··on The Scarlett Johansson Incident Makes OpenAI Look Desperate
They had to have known that this would be brought to light when releasing something that they didn't get permission for. Asking twice means that they knew it sounded very like SJ. My theory is that this will be used as an example for why legislation needs to be pushed harder with tighter controls and official hardware/software locks. "We can't allow the masses access to generate whatever they want."

I wonder if apple will benefit from this?
klhutchins··on Generating Code Without Generating Technical Debt?
Half joking but I try to make sure to ask the AI to "explain line 5 - 20 as if I am new to coding" and throw that in a comment

yeah, it seems people forgot the other two 'R's ... Reduce, Reuse.. then when you can't do that, recycle.
klhutchins··on Reduction of sulfur emissions from ships may be causing rising sea temperatures
Yeah, it still needs to be called twitter, even if it makes you seem out of the loop.

I've wondered the same. Will keeping spare computers and electric grid parts shielded underground be the only thing that can be done? Is there anything that ordinary people can do, or would it need to be nation-state level coordination? From what I understand is that the grid transformers are the items that would be the biggest impacted and the hardest to rebuild at a scale needed once the grid gets hit?
klhutchins··on Google announces Q1 2023 earnings [pdf]
Just keep scrolling, or make the ads cycle through faster. The limit will be time and total people?
klhutchins··on Ask HN: Why is news about fusion ignition not a bigger deal in popular media?
Personally, I'm burned out with the over-hyped scientific announcements that are many years away before anything of significance comes, or the battery improvements that don't show up and have some impractical gotchas. That being said, This is pretty cool someone got this working and they are being realistic with the impact to our energy needs and timeline.
klhutchins··on Bill Gates: You’ll never solve climate change by asking people to consume less
Localize manufacturing? With those huge cargo ships producing lots of CO2, wouldn't the best impact be to reduce the use of those ships? Try not to ship parts to get assembled into another part, to get shipped again and again back to the origin, and then final assembly and packaging and shipped to the store?

I know it's naive to think we can build manufacturing plants at the source of raw materials, and near consumers, but there should be a better balance?

klhutchins··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
I think I've had my camera on once the entire time I've been remote in ~5 years at my organization, and the same for 90% of my colleagues. I understand the need to ensure the person on the meeting is the person hired, but is this really how it is elsewhere? Everyone wants to see everyone else?

klhutchins··on Hacking the bureaucracy to get stuff done (2020)
Yeah, I don't care about the hassle of having two phones... If you want me to use a business mandated software, give me a phone or another alternative. Work software won't be on my phone.
klhutchins··on Axios-Ipsos poll: Most Americans say Covid is no longer a crisis
If we look at vaccine science 40 years ago and thought that it was settled, we wouldn't be where we are now. If we believe it is solved, how will it get better than today, why would anyone look into it anymore?
klhutchins··on GitHub incident: 2022/03/24
I just think about why would they force video conferencing into SharePoint?
klhutchins··on Tyre Extinguishers
It seems like a counter protest to the Tesla charger ice-ing.. both cause inconveniences to people who just want to get on with their day. It just causes more divide without actually tackling or discussing the problem.
klhutchins··on Tyre Extinguishers
People from rural areas never have to go to the city...
klhutchins··on I hate password rules
I think people also worry about the SIM card swap attack. Even if you have multiple ways to authenticate, RSA token, MFA app, and sms auth, the SIM card swap makes it way easier for someone else to have the thing only you should have.
klhutchins··on Beware of 'shrinkflation,' inflation's devious cousin
General question, can the concentration of items like dish soap/shampoo change? There are times I feel like I can wash a lot more with less soap using the same brand, size, etc. How would we as the consumer be able to detect if products get diluted, when it's sold in the same packaging. The $/oz remains the same, but the product is inferior than previously.
klhutchins··on Caffeine and theanine exert opposite effects on attention (2017)
Caffeine alone. I should probably give it a try without caffeine, and probably take a T-break on the caffeine too. But I'm not sure I have the motivation to do that.
klhutchins··on Caffeine and theanine exert opposite effects on attention (2017)
Anecdotally, Caffeine+L-Theanine makes my anxiety worse and my ability to focus severely decreased, basically the opposite effects of what people seem to achieve with this combo.
klhutchins··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
Haha, yeah... I'm not sure how important it is to have ECC to menu text.. good info.
klhutchins··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
QR codes are no good if cell service is spotty with certain carriers. Recently at a distant restaurant, I scanned the QR, waited for it to time out, discover there was no cell service, find the free wifi, enable my VPN, connect to the restaurants wifi, wait for authentication, then open camera app and scan QR again, wait for the kindle app to open the PDF, only to be handed a paper menu a few seconds later...

I know how a menu works. I read the food, see the price, and order. Personally I want to relax at a restaurant and not troubleshoot for myself and others, all while increasing my stress levels.

One way to fix this might be to encode the full text of the menu within the QR code, instead of a link?

QR codes are handy for easing people into eating out again... but wow; it can be pretty frustrating. Something I find myself thinking about more, is how Technology really needs to be more reliable, and how we really need to consider all the edge cases, before we can begin to replace the simple items such as a menu, let along more complex systems....Rant: I want something that will work 100% of the time.

This really depends on too many variables of the surrounding area. There are places this could work, but I would argue there are more areas where this would not.
