kirstenbirgit··on EU sends Apple first DMA interoperability instructions for apps and devices
EU forgets that this kind of overzealous, micromanaging intervention only reduces incentives to innovate new features and products. If the EU forces companies with a competitive edge (better software, in this case) to make it available to their competitors, what’s the point?

I can make my own decisions about which platforms and software to use, thank you very much. I don’t need or want EU to force companies to build software and products a certain way for some pipe-dream goal of making everything "interoperable."

And if anything, given that EU has repeatedly failed to implement sensible tech regulation, why should the same institution have the authority to dictate how tech businesses build their products?

kirstenbirgit··on Washington faltered as fentanyl gripped America
These problems are caused by criminalization.
kirstenbirgit··on Washington faltered as fentanyl gripped America
I don't think very many users want Fentanyl at all; short high, little to no euphoria. What users really want is diamorphine or similar, which is way less dangerous, but fentanyl is commonly used because it's cheaper to produce. Pure, consistent drugs would allow users to dose correctly and avoid overdoses.
kirstenbirgit··on Why doesn't capitalism produce good kettles?
At that point one might as well get an instant boiling water tap system.
kirstenbirgit··on Why doesn't capitalism produce good kettles?
Just trying to understand your thought process here - did you think that the parent thought that the filter would somehow remove lime out of thin air? I'm honestly amazed how you didn't immediately come to the conclusion that it's just for filtering lime out before pouring.
kirstenbirgit··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
Not on Slack, no.
kirstenbirgit··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
WordPress has automatic updates, and you actually have to enter a hard to guess password when creating an account.

The plugin issue is not specific to WordPress.

kirstenbirgit··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
> truly customized content architecture and presentation

Can you give an example of something like that which is not possible with WordPress?

kirstenbirgit··on Whitehouse.gov Chooses WordPress, Again
>I'd be very curious how a WP plugin is managing this.

If you don't know how the cache plugins do this, it's pretty obvious you are not very knowledgable about WordPress site operations. Please stop spouting falsehoods here.

kirstenbirgit··on Please don't say just hello in chat (2013)
One could also argue that it's utterly rude and disrespectful to the other persons' time to just type "hi".
kirstenbirgit··on My Experience at Apple
I really feel bad for this person. It seems like they are used to another workplace culture than the secretive and strict culture of Apple, and they might have committed some social faux pas which tainted their reputation, leading to sabotage from their teammates. Of course that doesn't excuse their behavior.

Additionally, I really hope that they now have learnt to separate themselves emotionally from their workplace. I know that it might've been a stressful (e.g. visa issues), but one should never let themselves get to a point where they cry about a workplace issue in their Christmas/NYE break. It's just a job, after all.

kirstenbirgit··on Temporal: open-source microservices orchestration platform
there's case studies from box, checkr and coinbase on the website
kirstenbirgit··on Is It Too Late to Stop Climate Change? [video]
Of course it is. Even if we actually start sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere – which would require investments in the order of trillions of dollars – the damage has been done.
kirstenbirgit··on Technology has created a barrage of notifications and interactions
I can identify with the way she describes her day. Technology, news, social networks and notifications fill up too much of my day, without much or anything to show for it. It's easy to get lost in your phone. It feels like a drug. I almost can't watch a movie anymore without fiddling with my phone.

In the end, as the end of the article suggests, it's all in our heads. We can set limits if we want, and your coworkers will adjust their expectations, if it's a healthy workplace, of course.

kirstenbirgit··on 27-inch iMac gets a major update
They use 10th gen Intel CPUs, and PCIe for SSDs. I'm definitely buying one, have waited for quite some time.
kirstenbirgit··on Tired of note-taking apps
I have used Apple Notes since I got my first iPhone, there's still notes from back then in there! Mainly for quick lists and things I need to remember, ideas, shopping, etc. Haven't really found any issues with it.
kirstenbirgit··on Is Ghislaine Maxwell secretly one of the most powerful Redditors of all time?
If I was /u/Maxwellhill, I'd just stop posting to troll all these people
kirstenbirgit··on How Apple's operating systems mistreat the user
Sure, there's a lot of things wrong with Apple's operating systems. I would love for them to be more open, and the ability to install non-signed apps on my iPhone (although they've added all the features I used to jailbreak for.)

But what's with the weird tone? iMonsters? 10 year old news articles?

And why's it so bad that other applications can do malicious stuff on your computer? Shouldn't the author be happy that there's still enough openness on the Mac for this to occur? Isn't that what they want?

kirstenbirgit··on The Art of the Possible
YouTube apparently does this, and Apple also suggested it in their letter to Hey.
kirstenbirgit··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
The "120hz dance" reminds me of my "drag my 2 external monitors around in System Preferences every time I dock my MacBook, otherwise they switch places"-dance.

It's amazing that all these display bugs still exist when Apple has presumably invested so much into their $6000 Pro Display.

Dear Apple: Why not spend a little time making the software work, too?

kirstenbirgit··on Ask HN: Which tools have made you a much better programmer?
Using an actual, proper IDE instead of text editors with plugins that have so-so language support.

Learning how to operate a computer efficiently. Use keyboard shortcuts. Set up scripts for commonly used tasks. Configure our environment and operating system so it's less annoying.

Being efficient at using a computer also makes you annoyed at poor UIs, and as a result, better at building great apps.

The ability to write things down, and finding joy in writing documentation. I'm continously surprised at how many people will have a 3 hour meeting and just not write anything down, or never make any comments or READMEs in their projects.

Understanding to use the right tool for the job. You don't need to use the latest and greatest container orchestration, library, or whatever.

Not caring about non-business effecting minutiae, like spending time doing code-style nitpicks in pull request comments (when automated tools can do the job), has made me more efficient and less tolerating of the tendency programmers have to focus on non-important things.

kirstenbirgit··on Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian Resigns from the Board of Reddit
None of those even scratch the surface of what used to be on reddit back in the days
kirstenbirgit··on Reddit Founder Alexis Ohanian Resigns from the Board of Reddit
/r/The_Donald has effectively been archived and marked read-only. There's no or little activity - the link you posted was an exception - all users have moved over to a third party site.

While one could argue that Reddit should have removed the subreddit sooner, I'm not sure that would have done them any favors (see Streisand Effect.)

They opted to strangle the community slowly, hoping it would dissipate. But it just moves elsewhere, like it always does.

kirstenbirgit··on Apple’s butterfly keyboard failed by prioritizing form over function
Looks like that preference is enough to get you downvoted here :)
kirstenbirgit··on Apple’s butterfly keyboard failed by prioritizing form over function
I don't actually mind the butterfly keyboard. Back in 2016 I got one of the first laptops with the it, the 12" MacBook, and I'm still using it daily. Also had a 2017 15" which I just upgraded to the new 16". Zero issues with both, and I haven't babied them at all.

While there's not a lot of key travel, it is very clicky and feels satisfying for me to type on. Individual keys are also very stable.

Lots of good advice in this article.
kirstenbirgit··on Kafka Removing Zookeeper Dependency
I generally think it makes sense to start with readily available tools, but as a project grows and becomes more specialized, it often shows that the tool doesn't quite fit, doesn't quite have the same performance characteristics, or otherwise not a good fit anymore. And then it's time for something better. Or, it works out, and you don't switch it out (e.g. etcd in k8s)
kirstenbirgit··on The modern HTTPS world has no place for old web servers
In general, anything you connect to the Internet (or perhaps even a network used by Internet-connected users) needs to be updated regularly.

That a HTTP server from 2003 continues to work today is happy coincidence, but it also means that there's probably a working 0day for that server software, so that, if you can't update it, you would have to mitigate it another way.

kirstenbirgit··on Suitcase: A macOS tool for deploying GUIs for simple commands and scripts
Yep, there's zero reason for the gifs. They seem really slow to me. Makes it impossible to copy the code if I wanted to, as well.
