kirk21··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Tool for academic researchers: beta.bohrresearch.com It is cool because it helps academic researchers to spend more time on their research.
kirk21··on Berlin Startup Map
Moving out next week to work on a tool for academics. Anyone up for coffee? Mail awesome[at]bohrresearch.com

Link: beta.bohrresearch.com

kirk21··on Square Cash
Any idea what mailsystem they use to handle all these mails? Or is it an in-house build system?
kirk21··on Reasoning From First Principles in Disruptive Entrepreneurship
Have created an overview of all his interviews here: http://everyelonmuskvideo.tumblr.com

This is also cool: http://shitelonsays.com

kirk21··on What I learnt bootstrapping my startup from Thailand for six months
Awesome!

How did your family/friends react? What is your next stop?

Moving to Berlin next month to bootstrap.

kirk21··on LeadGeni.us: User acquisition as a service
Congrats. Also cool that you give money back if they don't like the leads.

Question: do you consider an 'entry' plan as well (say 150 dollar)?

kirk21··on The Ph.D.-Industry Gap
If you have the 'right topic' like chemistry, a PhD can do wonders for your career. If you work on other topics (like movie studies), not so much if you don't want to become an academic.

Small weekend project: What type of PhD student are you? https://bohr.typeform.com/to/PPzzY8

kirk21··on Why I'm Getting a PhD
My main challenge is to keep focus and motivation.

My weekend project to keep me motivated during my PhD: http://bohrresearch.com

kirk21··on Free online resume creator based on LaTeX
Great tool for academics! Cool that you can add special sections like patents.

(disclosure: we are building a tool for researchers to write better papers: bohr.launchrock.com)

kirk21··on I am writing an Elon Musk biography
Reading the sample and it is interesting so far. Elon is awesome!

Can you disclose how many people bought the book or what price they picked(median price)?

kirk21··on Paul Dirac's handwritten notes for his PhD, the first ever on quantum mechanics
Wow! This must have been a lot of work to write this all down.

We are creating tools for PhD students so they can work more efficiently. bohr.launchrock.com

kirk21··on Show HN: Help me build a better alternative to basecamp
Can you say which one? Thanks!
kirk21··on Show HN: Help me build a better alternative to basecamp
Looks great, we use Producteev atm but a lot of us don't like it. It became cluttered because we use it with a lot of ppl (user rights etc.).

What UI tools do you use? The page where users fill in their data is cool :)

kirk21··on A LaTeX-Package that comes up with synonyms for 'Therefore,'

kirk21··on Non-Scientific Reasons To Do A PhD In The Netherlands

kirk21··on Thinking of Doing a PhD? Take this simple test
Great article! We're creating a tool for PhD students: bohr.launchrock.com
kirk21··on Doctoral degrees: The disposable academic (2010)
Depends on what topic you are working on. Very often PhD's work on projects for companies so that they have practical experience as well.

(disclosure: we are working on a tool for academics: http://bohr.launchrock.com/).

kirk21··on PyPy 2.0.1 - Bohr Smørrebrød
We are bringing a tribute to Bohr as well: http://bohr.launchrock.com Most awesome scientist ever. He had a big impact on how science works nowadays (see Solvay conference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solvay_Conference)
kirk21··on Why is science behind a paywall?
Any alternatives for Mendeley? I've tried Colwiz and hope http://bohr.launchrock.com will be great.
kirk21··on The 2013 Thiel Fellows
Yes, check this article. Have a nice day! http://pandodaily.com/2013/04/24/examining-the-thiel-fellows...
kirk21··on Just 11% of 53 cancer research papers were reproducible
The pressure on academics is indeed an issue. They have to teach, guide PhD's, research and publish (without mentioning controlling internal affairs).

On a side note. Has anyone found a good alternative for Mendeley? I heard http://bohr.launchrock.com/ is working on sth cool.

kirk21··on Academia.edu Lets Researchers Share Their Raw Data
Cool! It is necessary to have second opinions as the recent Excel blooper shows (see http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/04/24/i...)

I heard that http://bohr.launchrock.com/ is working on something similar.

kirk21··on Elon Musk admits Tesla's math was wrong
It is weird that they don't stress the reduced maintenance costs. When something breaks down it is always extremely expensive (or they are overcharging you). Consider the life cycle of a car and there is something expensive that will break down.
kirk21··on Why is there only one Elon Musk?
I admire him since he admits failures. Also from an intelectual standpoint (e.g. first principles reasoning), he dares to push the limits.

There are not a lot of t-shirts available of Elon so I made one myself: https://www.teepublic.com/show/2278-elon-musk

kirk21··on Let's reason like Elon Musk
* Fusion research -> We should build big experiments (eg. ITER) -> First principles: if it takes years to start the experiment, you'll lose momentum. * Construction industry -> We should reduce the number of lanes so we can work -> First principles: using prefab roadblocks could speed up the work (cfr. comment of Elon Musk in an interview) * Agriculture -> We should produce more -> First principles: the approach should be adjusted to the weather forecasts
kirk21··on Bill Gates Will Give You $100,000 to Build a Better Condom
Some products are being tested. http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/04/ff_vasectomy/1
kirk21··on Bootstrap your electronics projects on circuits.io
Awesome! Good luck.
kirk21··on Ask HN: If making money was not a factor, what startup would you work on?
You can do these things even if you have to pay bills. Just start small with sth you can ship quite fast (a part of a robot or a small one, a robot for a niche market). You can grow your company and eventually you will be shipping robots like it's 1999. A lot of companies start like this, the problem is that we look at apple etc as examples while most companies start with a small part (or as distributors of a product).
kirk21··on Ask HN: Startup opportunities in bioinformatics
Don't know if you consider it as bioinformatics but tissue 3D printing is an interesting field. http://forums.reprap.org/list.php?194

If you want to keep working on machine learning, your progress also depends on which databases you can access. Other ideas: - Predicting how cells evolve and grow over time. - Predicting how viruses spread
