kip_··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
Well, thank goodness we don't price Fire Department response the same way.

For my city of Ann Arbor, Michigan from https://www.a2gov.org/media/4glhvywf/2025-aafd-annual-report...

FY2026 budget: $20,810,234 Structure Fires: 58 Cooking Fires: 75 Vehicle Fires: 30

So should we somehow recover roughly $127,000 from the victims of each fire?

Of course not. I and my neighbors pay taxes to maintain the Fire Department and have it ready when needed. Many may argue that we pay too much, but those unfortunate enough to actually need its services would probably say they got a great deal.

kip_··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
I hadn't, but then 2.1.177 dropped in on auto-update and I assumed that was going to be the end of Fable for me, but I'm still on it. At least that's what the model picker is continuing to say along with the header.

Fable 5 with low effort · Claude Max
       ~/testing
Never mind, it failed a few minutes later with: There's an issue with the selected model (claude-fable-5). It may not exist or you may not have access to it. Run /model to pick a different model.

And now we're done. Oh well.

Some of us graybeards use to use teletypes to talk to our computers. In one of the earlier races between differing I/O, the printer couldn't print as fast as the teletype was receiving data, so the teletype would send XOFF (Ctrl-S) to tell the remote end "Stop sending data and let me catch up" and would then send XON (Ctrl-Q) to say "I'm caught up, go back to sending data.

Many of us carried that to our VT100 terminals and used it when lines of code or output would flood the screen faster than we could read.

Eventually paginators like 'more' and 'less' were invented and flow control via the keyboard codes for XON/XOFF fell out of favor, but some of us have very strong muscle memory. :)

kip_··on Ask HN: Why is Hacker News unable to effectively discuss difficult topics?
Dear Cake Baker News moderators,

I'm terribly disappointed that this community of thoughtful, interesting bakers can't seem to effectively discuss the topic of whether or not beans belong in chili.

It's been well over a decade since I last used a Palm device, and yet my printing still slips into Graffiti, notably the horizontal trail at the end for the letter V.
kip_··on Breaking into 1Password, KeePass, LastPass and Dashlane
So they're brute forcing the master password for these databases. Why should I be worried if I'm using a non-dictionary multi-word passphrase as my master password?

"Different password managers employ different approaches to security. As an example, LastPass generates the encryption key by hashing the username and master password with 5,000 rounds of PBKDF2-SHA256, while 1Password employs even more rounds of hashing. This is designed to slow down brute-force attacks, and it almost works. Granted, these are still nearly an order of magnitude less secure than, say, Microsoft Office 2016 documents, but even this level of security is much better than nothing." I'm guessing they meant more secure then Office 2016.

kip_··on Show HN: IsTempMail – Detect and block disposable email addresses
Why is thrott.com (ThrottleHQ) on your block list?

I'd argue that those emails aren't disposable. I use ThrottleHQ to track when service providers resell my email to other lists.

kip_··on Goread - Open Source Google Reader clone in Go
I'm rather happy with http://bazqux.com/

Granted, it's a one man shop, but he's charging $9-$29/year, so hopefully enough to keep it running. It's written in Haskell and Ur/Web, is quite fast, took my Google Reader takeout with no issues (400 feeds scattered across 35 folders) Allows login via Twitter, Facebook, Google or OpenID.

kip_··on How Clash of Clans earns $500,000 a day with in-app purchases
Have to agree here. I managed to avoid gem purchases up to this point, but now trying to gather up 2M gold or elixir means I have to carefully pick other castles with more than 200K elixir to attack to make it worth my time and dedicate more than a solid hour to play at one time, otherwise I'll get attacked and lose too much of my stockpile in exchange for a paltry 12-15 hours immunity, during which I'll only generate 216-270K of resources.

Yes, there are cheaper laptops out there. I'm happy with the fit&finish, the operating system and the support I've gotten from Apple, both online and in the store.

kip_··on See what your paycheck will look like before and after the fiscal cliff
The top 10% of earners pay that much in taxes because they already make more income than the bottom 90% combined.

If having a national defense and an infrastructure that has enabled a person to build that kind of income, don't you think that person should be paying more than a 1/(population of the United States) share of the taxes?
