Yes, like you I use favourite routinely. Please don't remove it.
kinleyd··on Why we are suing the Administration
I'm pretty sure it's fuelled by pettiness following the sinking of Trump's rally in Tulsa, Okla by TikTok teens and K-Pop Stans. Being "tough on China" and national security are convenient cover. It's just sad.
kinleyd··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
Has pricing been indicated anywhere?

Edit: See https://www.inverse.com/innovation/spacex-starlink-heres-how... and https://www.zdnet.com/article/spacex-starlink-internet-prepa...

So about $80 pm. That's pretty good imo.

kinleyd··on Mozilla’s Uncertain Future
Quantum was just one of the milestones, albeit an important one. Servo continues to develop and pass on many more features to Firefox. Shutting it down is basically shutting the major pipeline of progress that has gotten so many of us excited over Mozilla in the past several years. The decision does not augur well for Firefox and Mozilla.
kinleyd··on Mozilla’s Uncertain Future
<But Firefox Quantum only exists because of Servo>

Which is why, for the life of me, I just can't see the logic of firing the Servo team.

kinleyd··on How to become a good theoretical physicist
'The Second Textbook' is a nice perspective which resonates with me. In my experience I've found the need for as many textbooks as I can get my paws on - each book usually handles one or other topic better than others, or gives me that extra angle that helps my understanding.
kinleyd··on Nubank acquires Cognitect
An excellent assessment - Rich, Stu and team clearly must have assessed the option similarly. Congratulations to Cognitect and here's wishing them well.
kinleyd··on Show HN: React Guitar – A guitar component for React
And thank you for jguitar, my go to for chord reference for years now.
kinleyd··on The Next Phase of the Retail Apocalypse: Stores Reborn as E-Commerce Warehouses
I'm weary of travel too, and most weary of doing touristy things. If I can I like to plonk myself into places for extended periods and take my time wandering around.

For the most part I agree that travel is overrated. Most translations I've read of Lao Tzu suggests that he agrees too - we're in exalted company on this one.

kinleyd··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
Yes, certainly different strokes.

For me the fire hose of trending topics was too much, even with the occasionally fantastic post among them. So I rarely go there.

Then there are the really large communities covering subjects that interest me. I do subscribe to them but rarely interact because it's still a fire hose - responses to comments are really sensitive to the time of day and since I'm at least half to a full day off the timezone of the average community member, trying to interact is futile.

Then there are the smaller communities, usually tech for me. There is no longer that fire hose, and individuals are genuinely interested in learning something new, or sharing something new, often created by them. Add a number of this type of community and your daily feed becomes transformative.

kinleyd··on Suspect is arrested in grisly killing of tech CEO Fahim Saleh
Frankly, that depends on the communities to which you subscribe. Select the right ones and it is a wonderful place to be.
kinleyd··on Guy Who Reverse-Engineered TikTok Reveals the Scary Things He Learned
<If they were just doing it for fun, why bother taking backups?>

Because the assertions being made are rather more serious?

kinleyd··on UCSF forced to pay more than $1M ransom to perpetrators of malware attack
Yes. It was $1M after the volume discount.
kinleyd··on The largest cave owner in the U.S.
That was the first thought I had as well. I came looking for kindred souls and am glad I've found at least a couple.
kinleyd··on Friendly Feudalism: The Tibet Myth (2003)
Spot on.
kinleyd··on Genes, blood type tied to risk of severe Covid-19
I'm less than pleased too. Darn it!
kinleyd··on Flow browser passes the Acid tests
Yes, I think a better way to quickly save and organize bookmarks, addressing needs for both immediate use and for long-term reference would be a good way forward.
kinleyd··on The blissfully escapist comic novels of PG Wodehouse
Yes, that would be an excellent entry point!
kinleyd··on A History of Clojure [pdf]
I started out with that view too. Now, after many years of using Clojure, I have come to love the JVM: so many of the libraries it comes with have become critical pieces of my daily workflow.
kinleyd··on Ask HN: I'd like to learn vocals, any suggestion on how I can do this?
Eric is highly recommendable. He has lots of free lessons on Youtube that provide a foundation for all styles of singing.
kinleyd··on Org Mode – Organize Your Life in Plain Text
This user is probably in the 0.01% of hardcore org-mode users. For others like myself, org-mode files are far simpler. I have, for example, long eschewed even commonly used features like task management, preferring to focus on things like recording ideas, how to notes, anniversaries, progress logs, etc. After nearly a decade, I truly believe it has organized my life, in plain text.
kinleyd··on New species of fungus identified via Twitter
With hindsight one could say it was only a matter of time.
kinleyd··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
I've come to appreciate emojis a lot for that reason. gifs, not so much - although the really good gifs go down well with me.
kinleyd··on Deno 1.0
Maven is an excellent model to emulate, IMO as well.
kinleyd··on The Day I Found Out My Life Was Hanging by a Thread (2017)
Providing for an assumed future requires sacrifice and is the right bet. While doing that, understand that the journey is the destination. It's a tall order but somewhere in there is the answer to a lot of life's questions.
kinleyd··on I was tricked into thinking I had “grit”
User name doesn't check out. ;)

Truth be told, you hit the nail on the head for me, at all the different levels of the issue that you covered. As the years go by I feel more and more grateful that I'm still alive, and though I didn't do as much as I should have in nurturing my relationships as a young man, I'm really grateful I either did just enough - or am plain lucky - to have relationships to which I can now give my time and attention.

kinleyd··on An History of Nvidia Stream Multiprocessor
The same here. Been meaning to sort it out for myself for some years now. Finally done that: "A history ..." is how I was taught, and it shall remain that way.
kinleyd··on Will cable TV be invaded by commercials? (1981)
Coming from a very small and somewhat impoverished country, I agree fully with your comment. I enjoy Netflix now, and am warming up a lot to the NBA and NFL's League Pass subscriptions. These three have nailed it for me price-wise and content-wise, so much so that I'm considering switching from European/UEFA football viewing to the NBA and NFL. Outside of this, my only option is piracy - there isn't any other way.
kinleyd··on When did I run that command? Update your Bash prompt with the command start time
Thank you, this was so timely. My zsh terminals have been saving my command history but, for reasons I didn't know, were not displaying them. I'm much pleased to have that sorted out.
kinleyd··on Ode to J
I've taken a look at that as well. It seems to be heavily in development at the moment, though I'm keeping my eye on it.
