kin··on Yarn – A new package manager for JavaScript
Javascript in my opinion is still very young. You can't compile it to web assembly (yet) and the fact that there are different browsers that interpret it in so many different ways make for libraries to exist to mitigate this. Also none of these tools are 100% necessary, they just make your life easier and tools always have room for improvement. I'm sure others can add to this. I don't think any of this is a bad thing, it's just overwhelming for newcomers that haven't been following this whole thing.
kin··on Ewww, You Use PHP?
Yeah, I'm over the sentiment. Everyone knows PHP is a poorly designed language. There are many pitfalls and gotchas to watch out for. Still, it absolutely shouldn't be discredited. There are ways (albeit unnecessary for other languages) around avoiding the pitfalls. Plenty of companies have found ways for PHP to work for them, no need to constantly be elitist and judgmental about it.
kin··on Google+ Redesigned
Home is like my Facebook feed, except with even less of my friends and even more ads (only because I follow companies).

Collections is like following random Pinterest boards created by other people. I don't know about others, but I like to follow official things, or things that have the most followers but none of that info seems to be surfaced. Featured really means nothing to me. Is it hand-picked? Randomly generated featured? Are they paid to be featured?

Communities are cool but it's really hard nowadays to beat the communities in subreddits. Anonymous users seem to give a lot more to the community in an unselfish manner vs. Google+ users seem to post in communities in a self-promoting manner. This could just be anecdotal and my subjective viewpoint but that's what I see.

I honestly don't know how Google can do social, but I'm glad they're trying different things. Hopefully they try something new.

Random thought: I find Slack very similar to Google Wave.

kin··on New Virus Breaks the Rules of Infection
But a man can dream. It would be so nice to mount one on my shoulder as I travel through Southeast Asia
kin··on New Virus Breaks the Rules of Infection
As in the do more harm than good to the ecosystem.
kin··on New Virus Breaks the Rules of Infection
Although I remember reading somewhere that mosquitos have a negative footprint on ecology. There's definitely a ton of research at the moment on mosquito control. There was another article on HN a few years ago on a device that tracks and kills mosquitos w/ tiny lasers that can't harm humans. Apologize for lack of source, I'll try and dig them up.

EDIT: found it! wasn't too hard to find haha. And it seems other replies have already provided source on mosquitos and their net benefit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquito_laser

kin··on Pokémon Go loses its luster, sheds more than 10M users
It was an awesome phenomena to witness while it lasted. Sadly this is how it is with most games. People get bored if there's no stream of content to keep them engaged. Other games stay on top for so long by continuing to have in-game specials, events, and deals as well as DLC. Everything from Niantic since release has honestly just been catch-up and bug fixes.
kin··on The Cuban CDN
I wonder who it is that downloads a TB of data to distribute, and if they have a special means they're able to do that.
kin··on Are Rotisserie Chickens a Bargain?
Relative to whole raw chickens? Sure, rotisserie chickens may not be cheaper but that doesn't mean their value isn't a bargain.
kin··on Dropbox Is in Talks with Advisers for Possible 2017 IPO
So I have a question about this, for them to be deciding this now, does that mean Dropbox has something to confident about at the moment or it could just mean anything?
kin··on Hello from Orkut
At the moment it feels very much like Instagram except with the ability to filter by tags or something.

Only with Instagram I can curate my content based on who I follow and they also provide a better means of discovery.

As a new social media platform I don't see yet what this offers that will allow it to take off.

kin··on Uber is Fucked
Isn't Google invested in Uber? Didn't Uber order 100,000 units of Mercedes vehicles to do something with? Isn't GM partnered with Lyft to accomplish a self-driving taxi service?

I don't know, I think Uber and Lyft are well aware of the progress in self-driving vehicle technology and their actions point more towards them behind involved in the process as opposed to being left in the dust. The only group of people that are "fucked" are the current drivers whose jobs will be automated.

kin··on Facebook's really big plans for virtual reality
Wow, that monospace is so difficult to read.
kin··on Moment().endOf(‘term’)
Thank you so much Tim for such a fantastic library. I can honestly say that I use it more than the libraries that inspired it (underscore/lodash).
kin··on React in patterns
Yeah, I'm also not a fan of the DI example. I would rather explicitly pass it down the component tree or use Redux's connect. I believe React's docs advise against using context.
kin··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
I think any Nintendo IP would do well from the brand itself. But you're right. Pokemon Go is different. As someone who once obsessed with Pokemon 20 years ago, this game is like living a childhood dream. I'm pretty sure many other like me are what drove the initial traction. Social media did the rest.

Hell, it hasn't even released in Japan yet.

kin··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
It really doesn't have the polish of a Nintendo Pokemon game. Execution being poor is referring to its technical accomplishments, not its gameplay.
kin··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
You have to admit they're lucky we love Pokemon so much that we're willing to tolerate restarting the game every 2 minutes to continue playing the game. I'm on HN. When I say execution is poor, I'm referring to their technical execution. In terms of game design, as someone who puts in several hours a day into the game, the execution is of course great.
kin··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
The numbers will absolutely drop. I mean, there's definitely a ton of content that can be added like earning gym badges, Gen 2-6 Pokemon (which people don't really care about), trading, PvP, etc. But, at the end of the day I doubt Niantic has the time/resources for that. The execution has been rather poor.

Still though there's a demand for Nintendo software on mobile. They just need to really to execute. They're really lucky we're tolerating these huge bugs (nearby Pokemon and frozen Pokeball after catch still outstanding).

kin··on Cloud9 Acquired by Amazon
Congrats to the team! My first node.js experience was with Cloud9 IDE and the experience was great. I built a real-time multiplayer Bomberman clone extremely fast and it definitely helped me get hired in my past two jobs.
kin··on WebAssembly Specification Prototype
The performance gains are going to be massive. All of the browsers collectively demo'd this: https://webassembly.github.io/demo/
kin··on Lyft losing as much as $50M a month, president confirms
It's kind of crazy that they lose so much money just so people could start using Lyft but as soon as they can't afford to do that anymore Uber is just going to capitalize. Unless there's some sort of Loyalty program (like airlines) I'm just going to go with whichever is cheaper at the very moment I'm interested in getting a ride. If one has Surge then I switch and vice versa.
kin··on Bluetooth 5 will quadruple the range, double the speed
Nearly every comment in this thread is about pairing issues. I can definitely agree with most that I don't care about range and speed as much as I do the usability of pairing with multiple devices.
kin··on A Third of Valve Is Now Working on VR
Or... they could be working on Half Life 3 in VR?
kin··on iMessage + Apps
Well the fun stuff is just gives more way to express yourself. We might not use it but all these other chatting apps have had this for a while now. Apps, though, like any other thing that opens itself up to apps, have a lot more practicality. For example, the food ordering demo. I'm sure there are other things that would be useful to do without leaving the message thread (think Slack integrations).
kin··on The Most and Least Expensive Cars to Maintain
As a MINI owner, you can bump me up a few slots thanks to BMW.
kin··on The app boom is over
I think it was top of HN yesterday: http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/8/11880730/apple-app-store-su...
kin··on The app boom is over
The data in the article doesn't really show anything people didn't already know. There's no surprise that the download rate of the top 20 apps will eventually decline. I mean, look at their saturation amongst users, it's still ridiculous.

What's interesting is going to be the new subscription model incentive that gives publishers an extra 15% for subscription retention after the first year. Don't forget, App Store 2.0 is just around the corner and it could change the game. Not saying that it will, but it could.

kin··on Student Debt Dodgers: Americans Who Moved to Europe
Mostly paid off != paid off. After a few years you get raises, you get better jobs, you save money by living at home. Etc. My story may be anecdotal but my point still stands. People in the article are irresponsible.
kin··on Student Debt Dodgers: Americans Who Moved to Europe
Well I'm actually a millennial and your example was far more dark than mine. I got lucky in that I'm a developer, so finding a job wasn't so bad. But people who graduate college with a "useless" degree aren't so useless. Everyone has to start from somewhere and I think people lack the humility and confidence to deal with tough situations like a shitty commute, shitty pay, or having to live at home for a while. Honestly, none of these solutions are as bad as running away from it and leaving your parents to deal with your problems.
