kimsk112··on Stop Brexit: 700k sign UK petition to stay in EU
And 16,141,241 voted to stay. It's very close that some of `yes` voters might change their mind after the disastrous Brexit process.
kimsk112··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
I recalled when Microsoft employees and MVPs denied when Silverlight was dying. :-( I think the TypeScript momentum is too strong now.
kimsk112··on Leaving NYC for Nashville
> but they’ve come to regret the decision because the running isn’t as good and socially right-wing politics still forces itself upon every space.

Not true at all. I have lived in Nashville (10+ years), Houston, and Bay Area. There might be some area like Franklin or Belle Meade that is more conservative. But overall Nashville is like most big cities in the south which is liberal.

kimsk112··on US Announces Withdraw From Postal Treaty
NPR Money has a good podcast about this couple months ago. https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/08/01/634737852/epis...
kimsk112··on California's housing situation is a mess. Proposition 10 isn't going to help
Then that'd be a good thing? If people are not renting their homes or condos out, they can't just let them sit empty and will have to sell them at some point which increase housing supplies.
kimsk112··on Freezing your credit is now free in all states under a new law
If you have kids, you might want to freeze their credit too. I listen to "The Perfect Scam" podcast, and they said that thief now prefers to steal kid or teenager identities since they can milk their account longer.
kimsk112··on How potentially dangerous fake Apple products reach the US consumer market
"Apple said it decided to sue after the company bought a number of its power adapters and charging and syncing cables "that were directly sold by Amazon.com – not a third-party seller – and determined that they were counterfeit."

I recalled multiple discussions about fake products on Amazon. I have been very careful not to order from 3rd party, but if even a product directly sold by Amazon can be fake, this is not good.

kimsk112··on Try OCaml
There is a phrase from Yaron Minsky about OCaml, “make illegal states unrepresentable”, which summarize this.

It's more about programming declaratively, functional, as well as strong types which allow you to be very expressive. My experience with F# is similar, if you can get you code compiled, it almost always just works as you expect. But this doesn't mean that you can avoid writing tests though.

This is a good read about it, https://fsharpforfunandprofit.com/series/designing-with-type... by Scott Wlaschin.

kimsk112··on It's better to rent than to buy in today's housing market
Agree although I have been renting for the past 4 years as I don't feel settling down and still want to move around (e.g., working remotely). Depending on the market, owing might not be better economically (e.g., expense, flexibility to move), but it gives you peace of mind even if you don't plan to stay there forever.
kimsk112··on Insured, but Still Owing $109K for a Heart Attack
I feel like the issue here is caused more by greedy Health Care company like HCA than the insurance industry.
kimsk112··on Insured, but Still Owing $109K for a Heart Attack
> Industry analysts and consumer advocates say St. David’s has a reputation for exorbitant billing and for trying to collect big payouts as an out-of-network provider.

Sounds just like St. David’s Medical Center in Austin, TX is run by crooks. I like the take-home message that "Faced with a surprise bill or a balance-billing situation, don’t rush to pay any medical bills you receive."

kimsk112··on After the Bitcoin Boom: Hard Lessons for Cryptocurrency Investors
Because companies exist to create revenue and grow. Revenue means dividend and R&D investment, hence, people spend more to buy those shares because company values are higher. For Cryptocurrencies, you just expect someone else will pay more than you do, but there is no obvious reason why it should be that way forever.
kimsk112··on Housing tips back to a buyer's market as sellers cut prices
I have seen a lot of price cuts lately on the redfin list in Houston area although it has been increasing a lot for the past 5 years.

How are other markets?

kimsk112··on San Francisco Officials to Tech Workers: Buy Your Lunch
But they could spend time finishing work earlier instead of standing in-line for lunch?
kimsk112··on New study quantifies Bitcoin’s ludicrous energy consumption
Why has it taken so long? I thought this would happen in 2017.
kimsk112··on This Couple Found a Math Error in the Lottery and Made $27M
The math is explained in the article of the discussion here. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16494280
kimsk112··on Caste violence erupts in India over 200-year-old faultline
I have read about the caste system and issue in India. I have lot of Indian friends in US, but I never feel that there is any caste system among them. Is that just my experience (maybe my ignorance)?
kimsk112··on The Great Oil Swindle
https://www.investing.com/analysis/the-great-oil-swindle-200... for the non-paging article.
kimsk112··on Concerns about Bitcoin's energy use are overblown
Most money in the world exists only in digital form, so I don't think bitcoin has any benefit in this regard.
kimsk112··on Rising Rents Are Pushing More Tenants Past the Breaking Point
Or the book. https://smile.amazon.com/Rent-Too-Damn-High-Matters-ebook/dp...
kimsk112··on Critics say WeWork is an overvalued real-estate play
Another thing is lease flexibility as well as multiple locations. Our company has different teams at multiple WeWork locations. We have to travel to different locations sometime, and be able to just walk 24/7 into WeWork space which mostly located in the city with good public transport is very convenient. Conference room, mail handling, coffee, beer and other things help too.
kimsk112··on Uber says it's leaving Quebec if province insists on stricter rules
Then you should choose Taxi instead of ride sharing service like uber or lyft. My experience with regulated Taxi in many cities have been mostly bad while my uber/lyft experience in many cities have been mostly good, so I always choose uber/lyft over Taxi.
kimsk112··on Gas Pump Skimmers
Although you might not be affected directly, it's cost of doing business that affects all consumers.
kimsk112··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faq... said:

"You'll need to supply your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and other personal information. Fees vary based on where you live, but commonly range from $5 to $10."

So depending on where you live, you probably have to pay.

kimsk112··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
Why not Houston? It's major city, but it's still inexpensive. I know that Harvey and other storms would scare people away, but it's not as bad as it looks in the news. Houston area is huge and majority of the area are not affected much.
kimsk112··on Woman besieged by taxi drivers at Chiang Mai on suspicion of being Uber driver
People can blame Uber from what they did, but they have made people life better.

This is happening in Thailand. People are fed up with consistently bad behavior of Taxi industry and vote with their wallet for Uber, but the taxi industry fights back by bullying people.

kimsk112··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
I agree that this is nice. I travel often with big luggages and always appreciate when drivers got out and helped loading in and out of the car. Tipping via the app makes my life easier as I don't need to worry about carrying small bills anymore. But if I have small bills, I will give them cash instead.
kimsk112··on Let employees work from home
"Everybody – EVERYBODY, I say – wants at least the option of work from home."

I think his sentence nails it. I also prefers working at the office and interacts with fellow developers either formally (meeting) or informally (water-cooler talk), but it makes no sense to force anyone to be at the office all the time.

I'd like the flexibility of working remotely out of country or WFH during rush hours and commute whenever I want. This really affects my decision to join or leave the company.

kimsk112··on All vehicles will be electric by 2025, says expert
It's hard to say about the timeline (1st iPhone was introduced just 10 years ago), but we could see the trend with existing and upcoming technologies. Everyone probably remember what happen to film camera, CD, etc.
