kimmeld··on We Used To Build Things. What Happened?
Yes we stopped building.

Because every new technology is sold as a way to fire people and not “grow the pie”. What do you expect?

Rich folk don’t like it when poor people get more. It’s not partisan, it’s class based.

kimmeld··on Guinea worm on track to be 2nd eradicated human disease; only 10 cases in 2025
When the the only thing CEOs talk about for every new technology is how many people they are going to put out of work because of it, the collective desire for new technology and progress is understandably lessened.
kimmeld··on Google releases smart watch for kids
Other countries don’t have the bodycount of dead children like the USA. If anything it proves that less guns makes you safer.

kimmeld··on Cheyenne Super Computer Auction
Cheyenne Wyoming not Cheyenne mountain.
kimmeld··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
Apple won’t let you install software you wrote onto your own computer. Culturally the same as Ma Bell.
kimmeld··on Temperature control mugs tested
I have had an ember mug for a couple years now. Never have used the app. Works fine without, unless you want to tweak the temp from default.
kimmeld··on Veryl: A Modern Hardware Description Language
Mangling the quote about regexes… http://regex.info/blog/2006-09-15/247

Some people when confronted with a problem, think “I know, I’ll use a different language to generate another language.” Now they have two problems.

kimmeld··on Veryl: A Modern Hardware Description Language
System Verilog is the C++ of chip design. It sucks, but it’s everywhere and tied into everything. Like C++ there are so many ways to write dangerous code. We do need a new chip design language but it’s going to take something special to move the needle.
kimmeld··on iOS 17 will reportedly set the stage for sideloading apps on iPhone
Sideloading, otherwise known as installing software you want, on hardware you own.

Love how the term tries to make it sound so suspicious.

kimmeld··on People had to be convinced of the usefulness of electricity
The ADA also helps anyone who has kids and a stroller. Also helps people when they are injured and immobile for a time. Dealing with these things in other countries makes you appreciate the ADA so much more.

kimmeld··on Guido was right, there should be no lambda in Python (2018)
Being actively updated and maintained when Perl wasn’t helped Python dramatically.
kimmeld··on Guido was right, there should be no lambda in Python (2018)
Code can absolutely be incorrectly indented in python and to make matters worse it changes the functionality of the code when it is.
kimmeld··on It seems that the good times for online Minecraft play are over
Sounds like they learned from Apple pretty well.
kimmeld··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Makefiles
Well, many of make’s features is what makes it trash.
kimmeld··on The Dangers of Microsoft Pluton
The market (software/system builders) say that locked down platforms like the iPhone are fabulously profitable. Sorry.
kimmeld··on Bashing the Bash – Replacing Shell Scripts with Python (2017)
We have a tool that’s better at dealing with shell stuff. It’s called Perl.
kimmeld··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
My children’s health are a risk you are willing to take. That’s what you are trying to say.
kimmeld··on Firefox is the 45th result when searching for “Firefox” on Windows Store
The current state of every app store search is atrocious. IOS, Android, and Windows store. Even if you search for exact terms on IOS you have to slog through large amounts of BS. This is not a new thing.
kimmeld··on Why is Tcl syntax so weird (2013)
Replace one cancerous language with another one. Please no.
kimmeld··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
Because the CEO shares your politics and is only allowing your brand to express themselves at work you want to work there. I mean I understand the feeling but can we stop pretending that this isn’t entirely political?
kimmeld··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
Not an assumption. Just the data showing this to be true almost universally across the US. Statistically, breakthrough cases also skew older. Locally where I live >95% of patients in the hospital with COVID are unvaccinated.
kimmeld··on Interview with Jim Anderson, CEO of Lattice Semiconductor
Have you read the verilog spec? Half the commercial vendors haven’t implemented large portions of the spec or have implemented it differently from each other.

I’d love to have the momentum around open source EDA tools. At this point I’m not hopeful though.

kimmeld··on Interview with Jim Anderson, CEO of Lattice Semiconductor
The entire EDA stack from front to back is so ridiculously bad. System Verilog, UVM and the ecosystem that works on it are equally terrible. Just depressing all around.
kimmeld··on Microsoft executive says U.S. overuses secret orders for Americans' data
COVID has almost nothing to do with the erosion of civil liberties in the US. That ship sailed to much applause after 9/11 and neither party has done anything to remove the powers they have. Trying to rewrite this as some sort of COVID thing is silly.
kimmeld··on Protocols, Not Platforms: A Technological Approach to Free Speech (2019)
It’s hard the same reason I can’t put a ton of solar panels on my roof and pump large amounts of electricity into the grid. The upstream infrastructure is not sized appropriately. It’s not that running a server is hard but that most internet infrastructure is designed to consume and not produce.
kimmeld··on Facebook Says It Is Removing All Content Mentioning 'Stop the Steal'
They were a liability not a customer.
kimmeld··on Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition
Social activities are most certainly trivial when compared to a pandemic. Right now my kid’s school is starting remote only primarily because teenagers and early 20’s somethings couldn’t stop going to parties over the summer. Actions have consequences.

kimmeld··on Fed Says Millennials Are Just Like Their Parents, Only Poorer
I'd just go with adding all income (investment or otherwise) into a total pool and then tax that with a single set of rules instead of this stupidly complex tax system.
