kilo_bravo_3··on Reddit removes Aaron Swartz from founders list
>Edit: would the downvoters like to explain themselves?

They will never explain themselves. You are a "degenerate enemy" for thinking that calling for BLM marchers to be run over in the streets is "in poor taste".

As a degenerate enemy you are subhuman.

kilo_bravo_3··on Reddit removes Aaron Swartz from founders list
If reddit nukes a thread because it has been invaded by the type of person who has problems with open source community codes of conduct that require you to treat trans people with respect, that is a sign of it dying-- apparently.

Watch reddit die is just people complaining about "freeze speech" because they aren't allowed to tell homosexuals, feminists, and anti-bigots to kill themselves.

They have nothing.

I can cite the recent "Conservative Bigots v. Twitter and others" cases, every single thread of political philosophy from anarchism to totalitarianism in which private property is allowed, and the terms of service that people agree to when using an online resource...

...and all they can do is wave their hands and chant "censorship".

kilo_bravo_3··on Reddit reports 18% reduction in hate content after banning nearly 7k subreddits
What is an example of censorship that should shape my opinion?

I've only ever seen bigots who think transgendered people are icky and can't stop being "ironic" about it getting "censored".

kilo_bravo_3··on Reddit reports 18% reduction in hate content after banning nearly 7k subreddits
Kicking someone off your platform for calling everyone a "leftist cuck" or some other bigoted "ironic" comment is not hypocrisy.

It is basic human decency.

Do you have an example of someone who was "censored" inappropriately?

Why?

Should parents who take tax deductions (PuBLiC FuNdInG) for children perform an Oxford-style debate to discuss the merits whenever they tell their kids to brush their teeth and go to bed?

If the government gives you money, it is yours. No strings attached that you didn't agree to before receiving the money.

kilo_bravo_3··on Ordeal by Title IX
It's a straight up reaction to the market.

The majority of people in the market the university cares about think that professors who bang their subordinates should be railroaded out the institution.

The power dynamics bit is the best part. The voluntary collective of rational actors known as "the university" can choose to ignore violations of unjust policies (the absolute authority given the assent of the managed) the same way jurors can choose to ignore violations of the law though jury nullification.

Freedom includes the freedom to bend the rules and have an arbitrary and subjective number of people nod in agreement, thus making it "Okay", no?

If the above statement is not true, then literally, in the literal dictionary definition of the the word "literal" every single aspect of society will have to be destroyed and rebuilt from the ground up.

kilo_bravo_3··on Ordeal by Title IX
It is interesting that quillette chose to publish this piece.

The private machinations of rationally acting rational actors acting in accordance with the terms of their voluntary associations seems to be something that quillette would support.

For example, they wouldn't support the assertion that a manager at McDonalds conduct a trial where evidence, chain of custody, jurisprudence, and counsel for the defendant be guaranteed before firing an employee.

In fact I bet they have published numerous pieces asserting the exact opposite, consistently, in the past.

But here we are, criticizing a university for firing an employee.

I guess their internal logic is not consistent and freedom only apply to job creators, and not "THE LEFTIST ACADEMIC ELITE".

kilo_bravo_3··on Why is there only one Snap Store?
People will be angry with your bluntness, but you are absolutely, irrefutably, correct.

Ubuntu is so much more stable and capable than any other distro that is ridiculous. If Micro$oft or "Crapple" gave users similar levels of reliability that other distros did, every single user on HN (EVERY SINGLE ONE) would be frothing at the mouth criticizing them.

Hell, until F32, Fedora would not boot to a usable system after installation without GRUB and config file tweaks on my workstation (TR1950X+GTX1080+dual 4k monitors).

Ubuntu? "No problem man I can do it."

kilo_bravo_3··on An excerpt from Part 2 of “Unreported Truths” – a brief history of lockdowns
>Experience has shown that communities faced with epidemics or other adverse events respond best and with the least anxiety when the normal social functioning of the community is least disrupted.

New Zealand is a counterexample. They locked down tighter than a radioactive waste storage drum, stopped new cases which led to practically no strain on their health system, people actually (SHOCK! SUPRISE!) listened and wore masks to reduce local transmission, and now movie and television studios are flying personnel there en-masse and putting them through the mandatory quarantine in order to restart production.

Geographic or demographic size differences are irrelevant-- the actions can be scaled to a quadrillion people if needed.

In the US at least, closures were necessary because a great proportion of Americans are so self-centered, selfish, and stupid that they think that wearing a mask is a conspiracy to steal their rights.

They would lick each other's tonsils just to "stick it to the gubmint". They would squeeze together into a single pair of sweatpants and rub their bodies up and down on each other saying "how's this for social distancing, STALIN!"

That is literally, in the literal traditional dictionary definition of the word literally, happening before our very eyes-- the statement is immediately self-evident based on any rational person's visual first-person observation of his or her community.

Which licensee uses ARM branding?

You can use examples from any product in any market segment.

The Acorn RISC PC doesn’t count because they don’t make that anymore. It has to be a product on the market today.

I thought the entire point of ARM is that you license the ISA, add in your own special sauce to make your own thing and then sell it as your own thing.

There are ARM architecture systems in the machine room at work. They’re ThunderX2 not “ARM”.

Successful reorgs are done in response to growth, changing markets, and new lines of business.

Just like the examples you gave.

This is either a desperation or punitive reorg.

There are also boredom and “make my mark” reorgs and this ain’t them.

kilo_bravo_3··on The “free speech debate” isn’t about free speech
What rules?

You can’t have rules with free speech, amirite?

Just like collective groups of rationally acting rational actors CANNOT and MUST NOT have rules on how they associate or disassociate with other actors.

At least, that’s what everyone downvoting pretends to believe.

Or maybe I’m wrong and there are rules.

And if you break them you get cancelled— as the market dictates.

If this was a diatribe about how (minority group x) actually isn’t (straw man) and twitter deleted it every single one of you knuckleheads would be screaming FREE SPEECH FREE SPEECH END CANCEL CULTURE if Twitter admins hid it.

Or is twitter free speech but HN comments not? For... reasons...

C’mon, we both know this. Let the veil down just a little for once.

Just pretend to not be hypocritical tar pits of fractured and faulty logic for five minutes.

Maybe I should be more offensive so that people twist themselves into knots defending me, and then complain about rights and freedom while waving my pocket constitution when my comment gets deleted?

kilo_bravo_3··on Intel ousts its chief engineer, shakes up technical group after delays
If it was just a firing I would be hopeful.

But a firing coupled with a reorg?

Good luck!

Even a fingerless man could hold up the correct number of digits needed to express the number of times a reorg has solved a problem.

kilo_bravo_3··on The “free speech debate” isn’t about free speech
Cancel Culture is the physical manifestation of freedom of association and the effects of market forces on rational actors.

People pretending to be L/libertarians hate it.

If you don't want to lose your job maybe don't tweet shit?

What's worse than the fake libertarians "angwy" that rational actors tend to act rationally when associated with ideas they (or the market) find(s) abhorrent are the people who think tweets are "speech" that Twitter cannot arbitrarily control.

HN techbros tend to be more vocal than average about "speech" and "freedom" but are the first to report/hide/criticize, much like the fauxlibertarian stuffed shirts and billionaire-controlled free marketeer groups who keep suing social media sites for deleting their hateful and bigoted comments. Or DARING to not do business with them.

Thankfully judges actually understand rights and freedoms and have read more about them than what is contained within never-opened pocket constitution that techbros like to pretend to have read keep swatting them down in court like the losers they are.

Techbro: "Freedom!!!"

Corporate Board: "Ok, we're going to practice our freedom of association and disassociate from your bigoted ass. We like money and hate criticism."

Techbro: "No, not like that..... Only speech and guns. No association-- that doesn't count."

kilo_bravo_3··on Airbus' self-flying plane just completed taxi, take-off, and landing tests
What's the error rate of pilots compared to computers?

If we, today, completely eliminated all human pilots for all flights on all aircraft and replaced them with the best automated systems available in one fell swoop would deaths increase or decrease?

I'm sure there would be incidents where "A simple software bug killed 200 people today".

I'm also sure that bug can be fixed, and there are also "dumb human error killed 200 people today".

I don't know if any amount of human skill, trained for an entire human lifetime, using the best pedagogical methods, with infinite resources devoted to training, can beat a computer in the long run.

Navy jets have auto-takeoff, tons of passenger planes have auto landing (which, apparently isn't as smooth as human landing), and planes spend most of their time on autopilot already. I think some military UAVs can do all or most of this stuff already. What are their accident rates compared to commercial airlines?

kilo_bravo_3··on So Much for the Decentralized Internet
I love the outsized importance applied to Twitter by journalists and news junkies who lazily rely on it.

The vast, overwhelming, majority of human beings would not notice if Twitter had disappeared last night if it weren't for lazy journalists and news junkies reporting on its disappearance.

Journalists writing about twitter remind me of novels about quirky authors, songs about musicians on the road, and movies about Hollywood: self-important inside baseball.

Publisher vs. Platform is irrelevant.

You can sue anyone for any reason. Facebook and other online services enjoy broad immunity from civil suits IF AND ONLY IF they make a good faith effort to remove defamatory content.

I understand why conservative bigots are obsessed with Section 230: its repeal is being used as a threat against platforms that remove bigoted content. Conservative bigots know that Section 230 means nothing to the fact that Facebook can delete their bigoted comments, but they ALSO know that repealing it will cost Facebook money so they are pressuring Facebook, saying "If you allow our bigoted content we will drop efforts to repeal section 230".

I will never understand why people believe conservative bigots who say that it has anything to do with free speech.

Section 230 is literally two sentences, easily understandable by average persons. It has nothing to do with speech.

kilo_bravo_3··on Facebook has blocked Dreamwidth
People love bringing up the UDHR. Normally I would be happy.

But they are misusing it. There are articles besides the 19th.

Tweeting content disagreeable with Twitter, Inc. cannot be a right under the UDHR because of Article 20.

Article 20

1. Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.

2. No one may be compelled to belong to an association.

"An association" doesn't mean an organized body like a club, political party, or union. It means any tangible or intangible connection of any type between two parties.

The twin freedoms of speech and association means a newspaper can't be forced (in civilized countries) to publish content against their will. The owners of the paper can't be forced into an association with ideas or speech that is not their own.

Same goes for Twitter. If Twitter wants to delete or prevent the dissemination of any tweet for any reason at any time-- that's their right.

If this was not true, then my local newspaper would be violating my rights for not publishing my letters to the editor. Are they?

kilo_bravo_3··on Facebook has blocked Dreamwidth
Please stop this.

It cheapens speech and denigrates those ACTUALLY living without freedoms.

Facebook, Google, Twitter, or any other online service for that matter controlling what is and is not said on their platform is not "gatekeeping" anything.

Posting something on Facebook is not now, has never been, and will never be "free speech".

No matter how much you want it to be.

kilo_bravo_3··on Breach exposed more than one million DNA profiles on a major genealogy database
Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

The DNA records aren't the type that can be used to clone you, or frame you with some kind of non-existent DNA copying machine.

They are autosomal records. (or similar genealogical, or non-medical, types)

The people spinning fantastic fairytales about how the jackbooted thug of big brother is going to crush your throat probably don't even know what autosomal means and no amount of eduction will convince them.

I encourage everyone to submit their Autosomal DNA to public databases. You may bring closure to someone who has been or known a victim of a horrific crime and there is no risk to you.

You have at least one reply about insurance companies using this information to screw you.

1. This type of information is practically useless, actuarially, and

2. It has been illegal for them to do so for many years.

kilo_bravo_3··on The German Problem with Tor
I ran an exit node about a decade ago.

There are no freedom-fighting journalists in repressed countries using TOR.

There are only pornographers, BitTorrent users, crypto-haxxing "Z3r0cools" who use it to feel like they are doing something crypto-haxxy, and botnet command and controllers.

Countries in which TOR will be useful treat TOR users as de-facto criminals or block it altogether. Using TOR in a totalitarian state (and it is easily detectable) is worse than speaking out against the state.

Countries in which TOR is not needed are full of crypto-haxxing "Z3r0cools" who think they are actually helping someone by promoting TOR.

When you mention that TOR was an experiment-- one that failed-- to shield spies from foreign governments that crypto-haxxing Z3r0cools co-opted you get scorn.

When you point out that TOR fails in its primary purpose: non-attributable access to information or communications in totalitarian regimes you get scorn.

There is no space for criticism of TOR which makes it not a product or technology but a religion-like ideology.
