kfriede··on Robinhood Play Store listing went from 329K reviews to 180K in few hours
WSB has over 5 million subscribers right now (up 1 million from yesterday alone) and some threads get over 100,000 comments on a single thread. I don't find it hard to believe that a 100k Android users got angry enough with Robinhood to leave a negative review.
kfriede··on OpenWifiPass – Open-Source Implementation of Apple's Wi-Fi Password Sharing
Sounds like most of my experiences with Airdrop (though recently it does seem to be working better)
kfriede··on Signal to add social features, employees worried about potential abuse
Would an alternative be to offer auto-generated usernames that you have one-shot to generate a password for and if you lose that password you're gone? Something like opposite-dwindling-zodiac, casino-smile-widget, or creative-crumpled-dismiss?

If you choose to add a phone number as a recovery (and for contact finding) that's your optional choice.

kfriede··on Simple Bank Is Closing
I'd agree with both sides of this. I was a customer for years and anytime I had an issue they'd respond very quickly. However, getting my wife to get an account approved so we could have the shared/joint account feature was impossible and they would never explain why.
kfriede··on Simple Bank Is Closing
I was forced to ditch Simple after their ridiculous application policies wouldn't allow my spouse to create an account for us to have a joint account. Since doing so, I've signed up for YouNeedABudget (YNAB) [1], and couldn't be happier. Simple was a great service and I'm sad it is calling quits, but I've outgrown it.

Looks at username Oh hey, thanks for what you've done!

kfriede··on Higher Ed: Enough Already
Would the solution be a shift in the expected outcome of testing to:

A) Project-based testing proving critical thinking rather than memorization, and

B) Testing with the understanding that as long as you can find the answer via Google, notes, or a book in a reasonable time frame, this shows you understand enough to proceed? Is this not how much of the working world works as it is?

kfriede··on Higher Ed: Enough Already
Often times these browsers also require microphone and webcam access and track eye movement. Huge privacy violation, but I also don't have a proposal on an alternative other than proctored in-person tests.

kfriede··on E Ink smart screen puts a newspaper on your wall
Let's say it takes someone 30 minutes in total to drive to your house, replace it, and drive back to their own house.

If they did it every day, that's 15 hours in a month, or 182.5 hours in a year.

If you paid that person $1500 for the year, that's $8.22 per hour, above federal minimum wage.

kfriede··on San Francisco proposes “IPO tax” on eve of Uber offering
$1300 will get you a 1300+ sq ft house with a 2 car garage in many places outside of California. A one bedroom condo does not scream luxury to me, especially at $3700 a month.
kfriede··on San Francisco proposes “IPO tax” on eve of Uber offering
Simply knowing salary tells us almost nothing about the benefit(s) of your move. How much more/less do you spend on:

* Vehicle Registration, Public Transportation, Gas

* Housing (rent/mortgage)

* Sales tax

* Etc.

The housing is a huge factor, given that 30% of $55k is $1300/mo (A decent house in most of America), yet 30% of 150k is $3750/mo (A nice cardboard box in the bay area)

kfriede··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Do you have a hobby? Most of my side projects (and if you notice, a lot of the projects here too) stem from a hobby. It's not work if you have fun doing it, and if it's a side project then you can stop whenever it stops being fun.
kfriede··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
I've helped a friend with this one (I have a MP Select V2 full size), and I can tell you the thing is a workhorse. Pretty sure he has it running 5 days a week with 5-7 hour prints per day. He keeps the moving parts lubricated but that's about it. Just set him up with Octoprint to make the loading and monitoring easier.
kfriede··on Study: Two Monitors or One Ultrawide
I use 3x 24" monitors, all side by side horizontal with a minimal bezel and love it. I generally have email open on my right monitor, web open on the left, and productivity center. Works well for me considering it's my "office" computer, not my development computer. Dev has 2x 24" horizontal, with a VM on the right and Windows on the left.
kfriede··on Ask HN: As a freelancer, what's the best app to track finances?
I've used Simple https://www.simple.com/ as my primary checking for years and love it. I create "Goals" as buffer money pockets for things like "Savings", "Investment", and "Credit Card Buffer", and then use their expenses feature to automatically deduct certain bill amounts every payday. Their features are open enough to where you should be able to flex it to your needs. For example the "Goals" also has an auto-fill, but I just use them manually since I don't usually have a set amount I'm trying to save, just a certain percent per payday.
kfriede··on Gone in six seconds? Exploiting car alarms
I'd love to see statistics on how many injuries/deaths occur from recalled problems that users don't bother getting fixed.

I know I've had cars where certain defects (non-safety) were recalled, yet it took 2-3 weeks lead to get an appointment with the dealership, and several days in the shop once it was there (without a loaner vehicle). And I'm not talking full engine rebuilds either, just simple fixes. Most of the time I don't even bother anymore because it's such a hassle.

kfriede··on 'Not welcome here': Amazon faces growing resistance to its second home
Not to mention, the $5B tax break isn't money lost, it's merely an opportunity cost. If HQ2 wasn't moving to this city/state, they'd still be out that money.
kfriede··on FBI's Use of Paid Best Buy Informants Goes Deeper Than We Knew
Whose fault is it that you don't have time to read? If you are being asked to sign a document that you feel you have not had reasonable time to read, you should not be signing that document.
kfriede··on Introducing Uber Health, Removing Transportation as a Barrier to Care
Cost could be minimized if the particular doctor does not have to pay for a facility. I can't even begin to imagine what the cost per sq/ft of a generic doctor's office is, given all the regulation and equipment requirements. Having them mobile may remove a significant cost (though probably won't come close to the added opportunity-cost you mentioned).
kfriede··on Federal Circuit Should Not Allow Patents on Inventions That Belong to the Public
I wonder how this would effectively play out. How much market research will be deemed acceptable to accurately say that something hasn't been invented yet? Can Joe Dirt sue a company a year after their patent filing, saying he posted the idea on his Twitter before they filed?
kfriede··on Bitcoin energy use in Iceland set to overtake homes, says local firm
There is huge demand for electrical power, but there is only huge desire for clean electrical power. I'm sure Bitcoin miners want to use clean power, but if it means they have tighter margins as a result, then non-clean will be what they stick with. (Bitcoin used only as placeholder here).
kfriede··on AppStore Preferences can be unlocked by a local admin with any bogus password
I don't believe it is, necessarily. The issue is that doing this action requires the admin to re-enter their credentials.

In this case, any credentials work, meaning that if a "guest" user (semi-trusted by the account owner, obviously using the owner's credentials. ) were attempting to change these settings, they could bypass the prompt with a bogus password instead of the alternative which requires the guest to ask the owner to enter their password.

kfriede··on A Cryptocurrency Website Changes Its Data, and $100B in Market Value Vanishes
Who is forcing them to work at Amazon? Their lives are clearly better working there than if Amazon had never existed. If conditions are so bad that these employees live in tents, why not quit and.... oh wait.... live in tents (now with less money).
kfriede··on A Cryptocurrency Website Changes Its Data, and $100B in Market Value Vanishes
> 700 employees

So, 0.14% of their workforce.

kfriede··on A Cryptocurrency Website Changes Its Data, and $100B in Market Value Vanishes
Caring solely about money often has the side effect of making others' lives better. Amazon gainfully employs over 500k [1] people, giving them means to put food on the table. Not saying that wouldn't happen without Amazon, but more job availability is always better than less. Bezos just became the richest man ever recorded [2].
