kf6nux··on Tim Cook Faces Surprising Employee Unrest at Apple
For those who don't remember, this fired leader wrote "Most women in the Bay Area are soft and weak, cosseted and naive despite their claims of worldliness, and generally full of shit. They have their self- regarding entitlement feminism, and ceaselessly vaunt their independence, but the reality is, come the epidemic plague or foreign invasion, they’d become precisely the sort of useless baggage you’d trade for a box of shotgun shells or a jerry can of diesel" and many other things similar to it.

kf6nux··on Social media influencer/model created from AI lands 100 sponsorships
I can foresee a future where this (in practice) eliminates choice/individuality because people will allow their responses to be dictated by an AI for "best results."

Then whoever controls the AI controls society.

Tag onto that how AI/ML often reinforces systemic problems, and one can foresee how it would further entrench the status quo.

kf6nux··on Jay Leiderman has died
From Wikipedia > The Atlantic Magazine called Leiderman the "Hacktivist's Advocate" for his work defending hacker-activists accused of computer crimes, or so-called "Hacktivism" especially people associated with Anonymous.

The closest you're probably going to get is sandbox-exec https://jmmv.dev/2019/11/macos-sandbox-exec.html
kf6nux··on Apple Delays Rollout of Child Safety Features
The supposition was that, if the scanning had no reporting capability, then Apple could still claim a lack of capability. They could respond to government demands with, "Sorry, our software only blocks uploads. We have no ability to get telemetry on what uploads are blocked or how often."

That proposal probably wouldn't work for a lot of reasons though. The largest blocker being that (IIUC) the NCMEC won't share a DB of offending signatures without NDA, so Apple probably can't load it onto consumer devices.

kf6nux··on Apple Delays Rollout of Child Safety Features
Since Apple shared the algo, people who trade in these things already know how to get around it (just adjust the image so the fingerprint changes). People who trade in these things will probably turn off icloud too.

Similarly, governments could take a known image they want banned (say of a national embarrassment), grab some CSAM, tweak the signature on the CSAM to match the photo they want banned, and add the tweaked photo to the CSAM DB.

kf6nux··on Apple Delays Rollout of Child Safety Features
I bet people would have had no problem with the CSAM on-device scanning if it involved neither Apple employees snooping on your photos nor government reporting.

e.g. if they made it so their software simply refused to upload a photo and inform the user why it refused to upload it, then there's no privacy issue (at least not until they do add a backdoor later on).

kf6nux··on Home Depot is introducing power tools that won’t work if they’re stolen
> The trade publication Loss Prevention Media defines organized retail crime as "any organized criminal, conspiratorial attack on the retail establishment"

Meanwhile, the real world defines organized crime as: criminal activities that are planned and controlled by powerful groups and carried out on a large scale.

kf6nux··on California Bill to Decriminalize Psychedelics Is Approved by Senate
Fewer criminal statutes is almost always a good thing. Discriminatory enforcement is a huge problem. My local Police Chief told me he thinks of discriminatory enforcement as a good thing, so you can only solve it as a problem by removing the ineffective/undesirable law.
kf6nux··on A decade long Google account disabled with no warning or reason
This joke is only funny if one is misinformed. Dr. Seuss's foundation voluntarily decided to stop publishing a portion of his works to preserve his legacy. That's it. There's no culture war to be found here.
kf6nux··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
> How many times have they turned off your water?

Like anything else, this isn't a perfect metric. I know folks who have kept their water on all the way to eviction for non-payment.

That said, the author nails it when noting the dichotomy of "feeling broke" vs "being broke." I knew a lawyer that complained about "being broke" (feeling broke) because he "had to" sell two of his Porsches and couldn't make as many real estate investments as he would have liked to make that year.

kf6nux··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
Superconductive flux pinning. Specifically, I'm curious what behavior it'd exhibit if used as a core for superconducting inductors.
kf6nux··on Not delivering end-user value
I suspect this experience is pretty common. It so perfectly matches one of my experiences, I'm curious if it's the same company.
