kevinthew··on Founder of crypto lender Celsius Network arrested, charged with fraud
Right -- this is pretty clear cut fraud.

I think the normalization of criminal activity in the crypto space is largely due to regulatory ignorance but when there are clear cut cases of fraud, the SEC should aggressively prosecute these crooks.

kevinthew··on Pixar was never a masterpiece factory
Not sure when long form shitposting became acceptable but no one wants to read this tripe
kevinthew··on Baltimore sues Hyundai, Kia over spike in car thefts
There is data on the Kia/Hyundai problem that is unique to these makes because they cut corners on safety features that are standard across industry -- I don't know why your anecdote of people getting carjacked is relevant at all?
kevinthew··on Google has a secret deal with FB called “Jedi Blue” that they knew was illegal
This sounds exactly like the LIBOR rigging scam, various commodity market scandals. People rightfully go to jail for this stuff -- meanwhile we see the big tech companies bid rig
kevinthew··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
Diesel demand comes from shipping goods primarily. How do we replace the 4 million trucks on the road quickly? How do we get rid of container ship emissions? How do we solve backup generation problem? Go look at what's happening in South America right now because of low water levels -- lots of diesel generation.

We need to wean off fossil fuels but governments need to subsidize and support alternatives which they are doing bare minimum today.

kevinthew··on Why wood has gotten so dang expensive
Great summary and analysis. The context on the cracker shutdowns in February makes it all the more clear. This processing bottleneck has been playing out across the commodities sphere as the 2nd order impacts from COVID play out.
kevinthew··on TC Energy scraps Keystone XL pipeline project after Biden revokes key permit
You're right for some oil but there isn't enough rail infrastructure to enable Canadian crude growth without pipelines. Discounting WCS crude diffs to WTI will price out most long term production growth without offsetting higher crude flat price. Demand for oil isn't perfectly inelastic, so higher flat price enables more fuel switching (e.g. electric).
kevinthew··on Exxon Lost a Board Battle with a Small Hedge Fund
This is exactly what Tesoro did a couple years ago. They sold their entire asset mix to Marathon, probably why they want Goff on the board.
kevinthew··on Exxon Lost a Board Battle with a Small Hedge Fund
The 2 who were elected were a former Tesoro executive (oil refiner) and a Neste (another oil refiner) busdev person who helped develop their industry leading biofuels business. You can see why a vanguard or Blackrock would sign up for that as they actually make sense for an oil company. Really, we should be asking who the heck the other, existing board members are and why were either of these picks were controversial to management?
kevinthew··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
This is probably illegal via antitrust law -- it's inherently anticompetitive -- and just hasn't been tested. Another example of Amazon being an unethical company.
kevinthew··on How to Respond to COVID-19
Yeah. The part that should freak people out is this looks multiples more infectious to boot.
kevinthew··on Why are people getting worse at “The Price Is Right”?
That's basically matched to inflation - would be more surprised if unchanged
kevinthew··on Krispy Kreme mule will be allowed to continue operating
Not sure if serious but he's an accounting major. Guessing he has it covered.
kevinthew··on Amazon Removed Anti-Vax Documentaries from Prime Video
Competing ideas are good but mass public disinformation is one the 21rst century's biggest problems already. There needs to be some counter to this.
kevinthew··on Coinbase is exploring the addition of new currencies
Gold has embedded demand via governments, a global jewelry industry, and yes industrial demand. Bitcoin demand is speculators (mostly) and a handful of people who use it as a transactional value store. Comparing the two is a waste of time - they are nothing alike - but ignoring that the supply and demand picture for gold is way more stable -- global demand for gold does not halve over a few months, which is likely what drove the price shock with Bitcoins.
kevinthew··on How counterfeits benefit Amazon
I would say roughly 50 percent of things I have bought are counterfeit (books, all electronics, CLOTHING, you name it!) It is, frankly, going to end Amazon as a company eventually but they do not seem to give a shit.
kevinthew··on How Sellers Trick Amazon to Boost Sales
I would say 50 percent or more of the items I buy from Amazon are counterfeit. I suspect clothes, almost all books and electronics are fake. Amazon tacitly accepts it to boost their sales figures.
kevinthew··on With more students boasting flashy GPAs, academic honors lose their luster
Lots of people trying to justify their college experience in here. Reality is, none of it matters. What matters is how you were raised 20 years earlier and how you choose to live your life every day. Is every day a new puzzle to solve? Are you motivated to learn and solve challenges placed in front of you regardless of banality or difficulty? Guess what, you're the elusive employee everyone wants. Rarely are jobs too difficult for grades/degrees to matter in hiring process -- the job itself is the screener. Yeah, sure, some jobs are incredibly difficult and require elite skill and knowledge but we aren't talking about those jobs, we are generalizing. And guess what, attitude and outlook on life are all that matter.
kevinthew··on U.S. To Seek Social Media Details from All Visa Applicants
Social media and privacy have always butted heads and I hope courts start to side with pro privacy advocates
kevinthew··on “Pump-and-Dump” schemes in Telegram groups drive penny crypto coin prices up
Yeah, crypto hype in fake technological improvements is part of this mess. People actually think there is intrinsic value in a public ledger (there isn't).
kevinthew··on Stanford paper says rent control is driving up cost of housing in San Francisco
the issue is the lack of housing, the artificially restricted supply, not marginal effects like rent controls. definition of missing the forest for the trees.
kevinthew··on Bitcoin mining and energy consumption
Yeah, the article makes some false claims about how electricity markets work. By driving up power demand, you're incentivizing fossil fuel usage as it is the marginal molecule. The cheap power on the grid is already likely being max utilized, so any incremental kwh from bitcoin will come from the next cheapest source. Globally, that's probably coal or natgas.
kevinthew··on Facebook's experiments with user behavior in Serbia
"Rabid partisan". I do love coming onto to HackerTheDonald to get my hot takes.
kevinthew··on Amazon recalls eclipse glasses
I'd say about 50-60% of the electronic items I buy from amazon end up being counterfeit. For this reason, I avoid amazon unless it's unimportant stuff.
kevinthew··on Why I love the Detroit startup scene
What this PR piece doesn't talk about is the huge oil and gas growth in eastern Ohio/western PA which is probably massaging these numbers quite well. Pretty much all of Ohio outside the major cities in this area is fracking country.
kevinthew··on Why You Should Stop Taking the GOP Media Accountability Survey
Article shows some thoughtful insight into how political organizations monetize emails and online surveys. I also think it shows how outrage can be used as fuel for opposition as well as kindling for rallying support for an in group. It really shows how powerful and dangerous disinforming with statistics can be.
kevinthew··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
The pedantic bullshit in these comments is why America is in the shitter.
kevinthew··on Introducing Amazon Wind Farm Texas
electricity is a very liquid market, they're probably selling this generation into ercot, buying it in offset in whatever grid they operate on. they could have some sort of physical exchange in place to act as the offset (i.e. they sell power to a generation company in Texas, they buy same offsetting amount from same generation entity in California/MISO/wherever)
kevinthew··on Bullshit Startup Experiences
happened to be recently:

Manager: Hey you're here for the xx position right? You know, you sound like you'd be a really good fit for this new job that opened up, I just fired this guy, millennials amirite, so let's talk about that for the next hour.

kevinthew··on Ello: an ad-free social network
The invite-only thing works when people actually are compelled to sign up for your site. What is compelling about this? Seriously, I'm already inundated with a bunch of equally terrible social media sites, why would I indulge myself the chore of signing up for this one or fish for an invite to it?
