kesselvon··on Amazon’s HR Failures
It's a distinction without a difference.
kesselvon··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Companies lie to employees all the time; it's literally not illegal.
kesselvon··on Third member of U.S. FDA advisory panel resigns over Alzheimer’s drug approval
Doctors heavily rely on FDA to filter for effective drugs, they're not researchers with the skills to identify whether a drug has efficacy.
kesselvon··on Third member of U.S. FDA advisory panel resigns over Alzheimer’s drug approval
What a terrible idea. Nobody has the knowledge base to make a real informed decision on the efficacy of a drug. Not filtering for effectiveness is to endorse fraud and blame it on consumers when it happens.

The whole reason the FDA is set up this way was due to the rampant fraud that was occurring before there were standards for what could be sold to consumers as medicine.

kesselvon··on Amazon ends testing most employees for cannabis, will lobby for legalization
Alcohol is normalized and regulated, doesn't stop teenagers from rebelling by getting drunk.
kesselvon··on America has a drinking problem
U.S. divisions at this point run largely rural versus urban. Russia has the same thing - folks in Moscow live completely different lives than those in a backwoods provincial town.

If anything, Russia and the U.S. are pretty similar in terms of regional and cultural tensions.

kesselvon··on Ford unveils the F-150 Lightning, its all-electric pickup truck
In most states it's illegal
kesselvon··on Cheating at School Is Easier Than Ever–and It’s Rampant
Switching to exams in person and more presentation-based exams is how you get around this. You can pay someone to write a paper, but its hard to then show mastery of that topic in a discussion with your professor.

That would require professors to show interest in teaching, so I doubt universities would go for it. It doesn't scale and they're not interested in adequate staffing.

kesselvon··on U.S. has entered unprecedented climate territory
The US and EU are the big end customers for Chinese goods - Western economies shipped off the pollution from manufacturing, so it's not as straightforward as "its China's fault"
kesselvon··on Writing books is not really a good idea
The second half of Count of Monte Cristo felt like some serious word count padding
kesselvon··on Stock Market Returns Are Anything but Average
There are trades where you can make a small profit regularly, but on bad days you take huge losses. The huge losses outweigh all the potential profits by a large margin. Just like picking up pennies is a small gain while risking death to do so
kesselvon··on Stock Market Returns Are Anything but Average
That assumes you have the time to make up for bad market years like that. If you're retired and you see the market tank like that, its hard to fight the urge to not panic sell
kesselvon··on Labor shortage or terrible jobs?
Why create an incentive to exploit teenagers for profit? Work is work, regardless of if the person being paid is 18 or 81. You're paying for output.
kesselvon··on Man makes money from cold calls with his own higher-rate phone number (2013)
Pretty sure that would be a conflict of interest
kesselvon··on Detroit executives are killing off slow-selling cars in favor of SUVs
I wouldn't say ridesharing. Young people are broke and they aren't going to buy new cars when a car payment is the equivalent of their student loans
kesselvon··on Why Wages Aren’t Growing
Roosevelt's reforms had a very clear undercurrent of 'its either this or a socialist revolution'
kesselvon··on Why Wages Aren’t Growing
Market economies are good at allocating resources, but they're also good at concentrating resources, which kills the market. And in some sectors, markets don't benefit the social fabric as a whole, hence why intervention into markets is often necessary
kesselvon··on Why Wages Aren’t Growing
Single salary households existed because women were out of the labor force. Those slowly disappeared as the internal labor market grew, as you could get away with paying women less
kesselvon··on Why Wages Aren’t Growing
The workforce doesn't have to bend over, but there is an inequality in negotiations when the company threatens to ship the work to somewhere where they can pay workers a fraction, even if the quality will be shit.

We don't exactly have a legal framework to prevent companies from doing this either

kesselvon··on The true cost of an Uber ride is higher than it seems
Turns taxi industry into a subsistence workforce. Uber drivers get screwed in the equation once you factor in all the costs and depreciation, then uber sucks up the profits and takes them out of local communities.

The sharing/on-demand economy is incredibly cruel to the 1099s doing the heavy lifting

kesselvon··on The true cost of an Uber ride is higher than it seems
No one has ever shown that economies of scale exist in the taxi/ride-share industry.
kesselvon··on Annual note to self: most of the world exists outside the tech bubble
Sure, your uber ride is $7 dollars but the person driving that is getting screwed.
kesselvon··on Slack Is Raising $250M from SoftBank, Others
Basically, except there's more risk involved and a shorter horizon
kesselvon··on Cafeteria workers at Facebook struggle to make ends meet
"have the poor considered making more money?"
kesselvon··on Wall Street Profits by Putting Investors in the Slow Lane
flash market crashes.
kesselvon··on Americans think they live in a democracy. But workplaces are small tyrannies
Trump isn't interested in actually fixing things, and I don't know what evidence has led you believe he is.
kesselvon··on Alienation 101: On Chinese Students in the American Midwest
Big 10 school I went to used out-of-state and foreign students (who paid 2-3x what in-state was) to finance finaid to less advantaged in-state students.
kesselvon··on What convinced the Supreme Court to take the Wisconsin gerrymandering case?
first two parties to finish in the last election would be just as good
kesselvon··on Visa to Pay Restaurants to Stop Taking Cash
what basis do they have to arrest you when the restaurant won't take your money?
kesselvon··on Escaped inmate may have used wire cutters delivered by drone
That's kind of implying a meritocracy actually exists.
