kentiko··on The Waymo World Model
Cars don't work in dense places.
kentiko··on There's a ridiculous amount of tech in a disposable vape
The complexity of a can isn't as extreme as a disposable ARM chip, but it is still quite a sophisticated mass produced object. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUhisi2FBuw

Many daily life, single use objects have a lot of thoughts put into them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj0ze8GnBKA

kentiko··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
> normal people

We usually use the term "neurotypical". Autistic people aren't abnormal, the are different.

kentiko··on Frequently Asked Unicycling Questions

kentiko··on Don't throw away your old PC–it makes a better NAS than anything you can buy
The first thing you should consider doing with you old device is selling or giving them away. This helps lowering the need for manufacturing more hardware, it prevents the hardware becoming e-waste in a drawer, and it put pressure on the market to lower it's prices. Sure, you can reuse as a NAS, but someone probably needs it more.
kentiko··on Show HN: Boing
Nice, could you share how you implemented it?
kentiko··on iPhone Air
I attempted to replace my 13 mini's battery today using the iFixit kit. I broke the OLED panel doing so. Removing the screen take much more force than I though. I did this hopping to keep my iPhone maybe 2 more years. Now I am waiting for ordering the 17 next Friday. I will have to manage having half of my screen being white until then...
kentiko··on Car has more than 1.2M km on it – and it's still going strong
> Since then, he's used it as his daily driver, putting on at least 120 kilometres a day driving from his home in Wyses Corner, N.S., to Halifax and back each day of his working life.

120km per day of commuting is crazy to me. I work from home and occasionally do a 14km bicycle commute to the office.

kentiko··on We're bringing Pebble back
I'm very happy, I will buy it if it has the same spirit has the previous ones. I loved my Pebble Time, I am not sure why I sold it. It was just what a smart watch was supposed to be, not a mini smart phone on your wrist. Buttons instead of touch screen. Long battery life. Always on display. Simple to use.
kentiko··on Waymo achieves 92% reduction in bodily injury claims compared to human drivers
I can already see the sign "No manual driving allowed" at the entrance of highways.
kentiko··on Apple collaborates with Nvidia to research faster LLM performance
Sell it? If you keep it until it’s worth nothing, it is equivalent to throwing it away.
kentiko··on Apple Watch Ultra 2 Hacked
Don’t forget: it’s never the victim’s fault, no matter how careless they are.
kentiko··on Why are cars designed to be capable of going much faster than the speed limit?
Unlike water, we can decide how fast a car ca go.
kentiko··on Why are cars designed to be capable of going much faster than the speed limit?
I do not think your comparison is valid. Unlike a knife, a car can implement a max speed limit without impacting its usefulness.
kentiko··on DIY Night Clock Projector (2018)
It could be set with an allowed list of friends and family only. The idea for me would be to know if it's worth looking at my phone if someone I care about tried to reach me, or if I can keep my eyes closed a bit longer instead. I absolutely do not want an email or Slack messages counter, of course. But in any case, maybe you are right, and it's a bad idea entirely...
kentiko··on DIY Night Clock Projector (2018)
I love this. I would really like to have a clock like this with the outside temperature and maybe a counter for unread messages.
kentiko··on Pulpatronics tackles single-use electronics with paper RFID tags
> This mechanism is similar to barcodes and QR codes in the sense that the information is encoded geometrically, but it doesn't need to be scanned visually.

They really need to give more details on this. Maybe there is some RF voodoo here, but I find it hard to believe it is practical. Also, how much data can be stored? And aren't most RFID tag programmable? If this requires a laser to be programmed, it might be a significant downside compare to the chip version.

kentiko··on EU tells Apple to open everything up to its rivals
Is this a thing with moms using an android phone? I don't think it is.
kentiko··on Honda’s new Motocompacto e-scooter is stolen straight from my dreams
This one is simply not made for you then. I can see how it could be perfect for micro mobility, for going to the train station or for doing a few kilometres in a dense city. But it’s clearly not made for long distances. The size of the seat and the wheels clearly shows this is meant to be portable while compromising on how it rides.
kentiko··on Slack was down
To avoid checking by habit, I simply uninstall the app entirely during my time off.
kentiko··on Loneliness is stronger when not alone
I think I am same as you. I recently noticed that listening to birds singing make me feel incredibly melancholic. I was very lonely for a few years. I was listening to the singing a lot when I was at my place, and now I have associated birds singing and loneliness. It is unfortunate that something so calming and beautiful now makes me feel sad. It has become the sound of loneliness to me.
kentiko··on Architect your project with Framed: effortless files and directories management
Does anyone know about a Python equivalent of this?
kentiko··on Pixel Tablet
Last time I bought a Google device was a Pixel C end of 2016 as present for my dad. It was supported up to Android 8, released in 2017, and then Google decided this device was obsolete and would never get the next Android release. I am done with Google hardware. I bought my dad an iPad Mini since, as a replacement, I sure it will be updated for much longer.
