kentbuckle··on The day Apple won the Flash fight
Isn't that the point of the article? Apple sold enough devices to get Adobe to change their content delivery strategy?
kentbuckle··on Lab-grown meat might be only 6 months away
There is some evidence this might be a hoax: http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/06/23/japan...
kentbuckle··on Mari0 - Super Mario Bros. + Portal
One additional difficulty in making Portal 2-dimensional is the loss of a relative frame of reference, which can cause control problems. If you hold down the left key to enter a right-facing portal, and exit through another right-facing portal, do you start moving right even though you are holding down the left key? Massive kudos if they can find a intuitive way to solve this.
kentbuckle··on Google Fiber: 151Mbps down / 92Mbps up
Stanford gives out automated warnings if you have a lot of torrent-y network activity (I got a few back in the day after downloading some linux distros), but as I recall they are only to notify students that if they are pirating music/movies/etc, they will be held accountable if someone from the RIAA or some other group contacts Stanford about it. If you're downloading legitimate software you shouldn't have anything to worry about (except for some occasional automated spam)
kentbuckle··on 90 Percent of People Don't Know How to Use CTRL+F (or CMD + F)
Is it 90% of people who don't know the keyboard shortcut, or the find functionality?
kentbuckle··on New Visual Proportions for the iOS User Interface
"If you divide 480 by 44 you get a remainder of 20. Divide by 11 and you get a remainder of 9" Isn't it 40 and 7 respectively? edit: I think the author meant 460, which is 480px - 20px for the status bar
kentbuckle··on 8 Reasons Why Google+ Will Beat Facebook in the long run
The link to the actual list: http://arunshroff.com/2011/08/10/8-reasons-why-google-will-b...
kentbuckle··on World's Thinnest House is only 4 ft wide
It personally reminds me of 2d side-view games (like later castlevanias) where you can't walk around objects like tables or boxes (you have to jump over them to progress). Perhaps level designers for these sorts of games will become architectural consultants when super-thin houses start springing up in other places?
kentbuckle··on Why I will never pursue cheating again
Just out of curiosity, where are you from and how is cheating regarded there?
kentbuckle··on "My iOS app is being pirated. Over 90% haven't paid for it. What can I do?"
Um, I think you misread what he meant by "destroying" websites - this app seems to be a game where you control an "asteroids"-style spaceship shooting UI elements on websites (a mobile version of this: http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/09/kick-ass-bookmarklet-...) Also, would Apple really approve an application used for DDOS-ing websites?
kentbuckle··on AmazonLocal
Judging by the fact that Boise, ID is their only market right now, and the deals on both sites for Boise are different, I'd say it's independent of livingsocial
kentbuckle··on The most minimalist commercial website you'll ever see
Are they mutually exclusive? Serious question
kentbuckle··on Camera that lets you adjust focus after you take a picture
Here is the paper their tech is based on: http://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/lfcamera/ Basically, the light isn't focused to a single plane, but rather is sent through an array of microlenses which can be sampled in various ways to simulate the focal plane of a traditional camera.
kentbuckle··on Google Code Jam 2011 Language Popularity
Props to the befunge coder as well
kentbuckle··on Adobe announce subscription pricing model along with Creative Suite 5.5
The math comes out to about 17 months' subscription fees for a permanent license for each product. Hopefully at least some of those fees can go towards buying a full license in the future.
kentbuckle··on The Idea about Ideas (2005)
The conversation in the middle of the post doesn't sound too different from conversations I've had with friends. I hope I didn't miss out on a big opportunity...
kentbuckle··on Why no looting in Japan?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/22/world/asia/22poverty.html The poverty rate in Japan isn't that much lower than the US (15.7% vs. 17.1% according to the article). However, people below that line in Japan are somewhat unwilling to admit being in poverty.
kentbuckle··on Amazon launches Prime instant videos, unlimited streaming for Prime subscribers
instantwatcher.com does a good job of indexing new and popular streaming titles on Netflix, if you haven't already heard of it or something similar.
kentbuckle··on The Great Gatsby - For NES
The Japanese title on the about page translates to something like "Heart-Pounding Library: The Legend of Gatsby", which is how I think the book should have been titled.
