keewee7··on Finland and Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer
If you are predicting an ethnic breakup of Russia you are very wrong.

Most minority republics in the Russian Federation have been fully Russianized.

keewee7··on Finland and Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer
>The US needs to push Ukraine to agree to neutrality.

Russia's version of "neutrality" is a joke.

Russia's demand for "neutrality" means letting Russia decide Ukraine's foreign and military policies. Russia want to enforce specific limits on the size and capabilities of Ukraine's military. That will never be accepted by Ukraine.

keewee7··on Finland and Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer
>Can we please start de-escalating this situation?

Only Russia can de-escalate the situation.

The irony is that Russia could have taken Donetsk and Luhanks and the war would have been out of the news cycle by now. The West would just have repeated the harmless 2014 targeted "sanctions" on Russian oligarchs and politicians.

Putin's and Lavrov's genocidal speeches about Ukraine being a fake nation that should be "de-nazified" and the Russian attempt at taking the capital Kyiv has escalated this conflict into its current state.

keewee7··on Finland and Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer
Finland is very likely to join NATO. Support for NATO among the population is very high and among active Finnish military personnel it's over 90%. The country shares a border with Russia and there is some historical bad blood between Finland and Russia.

However only 50% of Swedes want to join NATO and the current ruling government is anti-NATO.

If I was a betting person I would put the likelihood of Finland joining NATO at 99% and the likelihood of Sweden joining NATO at 0%.

keewee7··on New Chinese GPU Maker Moore Threads Unveils the MTT S60 GPU
Doubt it. It's either manufactured in Taiwan or by a Taiwanese compant in China.
keewee7··on Unit Testing is Overrated (2020)
Unit tests are useful because it improves software design by encouraging you to develop modular software units that can be tested independently.

However you need integration tests and end-to-end tests to improve software correctness.

keewee7··on RedwoodJS 1.0 and $1M Funding
There have been a few these universal end-to-end JavaScript frameworks.

However this framework looks more promising because React, GraphQL, and TypeScript have slowly become industry standards and because its immediately getting good funding and organization behind it.

keewee7··on The Russians Are Coming
>If you’re digging remote work

I am all for remote work but what Russian tech people really want right now is to move away from Russia and take their families with them.

Which high income countries are legally most open to Russian professionals with spouses and children?

keewee7··on The Worst US Defense Program of All
The "author" started the blog one day after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the theme in many of the articles is the usual triad of arguments from Russian bots:

- The West is to blame, Russia is innocent!

- Russia is strong! Western sanctions can't hurt Russia!

- Western sanctions are provoking Russia and will lead to nuclear WW3!

As an European with many Polish and Ukrainian friends I'm happy that isolationist American techno-libertarians are confined to Hacker News and r/Conspiracy. It would be a terrifying world if American libertarians had a say in foreign policy and defense policy.

keewee7··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
Interesting that you mention GSuite/Google.

I don't remember Google having any large-scale security incidens.

Have they been better at playing down their security incidents or are they doing something very right that the rest of the industry can learn from?

keewee7··on Mitsuhiko on anti-vax groups now spreading pro-Russia conspiracy theories
I have noticed the same here in Denmark.

Also a big thanks to @mitsuhiko for creating the Flask framework.

keewee7··on OpenBSD/arm64 on Apple M1 systems
How does M1 differ from arm64? Why is all this work needed to run Linux or OpenBSD on M1?
keewee7··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
>an American NGO lost 30,000 files documenting Russian war crimes

This is a bullshit claim made by a one hour old GitHub account with a random username. Probably a pro-Russian troll that wants to dissuade other open source maintainers from pushing anti-Russian protestware.

keewee7··on N° 9–2022: ExoMars suspended
>How would Musk be in any better position if a major part of a spacecraft, launch vehicle etc came from Russia?

SpaceX don't use Russian parts.

keewee7··on N° 9–2022: ExoMars suspended
It really doesn't help that the administrator of Russia's Space Agency, Dmitry Rogozin, is a completely unhinged neo-nazi.

Here he is giving Nazi salute at a Nazi march in 2007:

keewee7··on Norwegian developer job board for Ukrainian refugees
Russian pilots started flying Syrian flagged bombers well before 2015. Russia was the primary weapons supplier to the Syrian regime throughout the conflict.
keewee7··on Norwegian developer job board for Ukrainian refugees
A lot of comments here about racism against Muslim refugees and the lack of racism against Ukrainian refugees.

We are only three weeks into this war and refugee crisis. The far-right here in Western Europe have not yet had time to come up with reasons to hate Ukrainian refugees. The far-right is actually busy defending Putin's invasion and spreading pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian propaganda. It is only a question of time before this anti-Ukrainian propaganda targets Ukrainian refugees.

Another thing is that there were plenty of similar job boards for Syrian refugees in Denmark and Germany. Syrian refugees with dev skills were welcomed with open arms by our IT industry.

keewee7··on Norwegian developer job board for Ukrainian refugees
Ask Syrian refugees here in Europe what they actually fled. They fled the bombs dropped by Russia and their Syrian allies. It was Russia and their Syrian allies who were responsible for the majority of civilian casualties and the massive flow of refugees.
keewee7··on Israel passes law denying naturalization to Palestinian spouses
Today most Israeli Jews are of Middle Eastern origin from countries like Syria, Morocco and Iraq.

They are not European Holocaust survivors or their direct descendants.

keewee7··on Facebook and Instagram to temporarily allow calls for violence against Russians
>War makes unlikely alliances. If you're fighting for the existence of your country you're not going to say no to the help of nazis.

Well said. When Nazi Germany occupied Denmark it was a far-right conservative Danish resistance movement that helped Danish Jews flee to Sweden.

keewee7··on DJI limits “Aeroscope” for the Ukrainian Army but not for the Russian Army
DJI is the largest consumer quadcopter drone manufacturer in the world. These drones are also used by military and police all over the world.
keewee7··on Vladimir Putin is pushing Russia into past: Maybe a generation, maybe a century
WarGonzo is Russian state propaganda. How do we know those are Ukrainian defenders and not Russians pretending to Ukrainians?
keewee7··on Vladimir Putin is pushing Russia into past: Maybe a generation, maybe a century
>My colleague with family in the region

Just say he is Russian instead.

>Which might explain why they would be targeted.

Why is it hard to believe that Russians would intentionally target Ukrainian hospitals? Have you seen what the Russian media and social media say about Ukrainians?

Russia literally bombed and killed 47 civilians waiting for food last week.

>but I know it’s not black and white

Russia started an irredentist invasion of an independent democratic country.

How is that not black and white?

keewee7··on Putin’s Strategic Error
>the US/west backed coup to remove a democratically elected leader

You are pushing eight-year-old Russian disinformation. I don't even think the Russians believe it anymore.

The Ukrainian people removed a corrupt dictator in a democratic revolution in 2014.

keewee7··on Prediction that Kyiv falls to Russian forces by April 2022 goes from 90% to 26%
>Even weirder multiple people are parroting this today on HN.

HN is read by many influential Silicon Valley people. It's definitely the target of Russian psyops.

keewee7··on Red Hat is discontinuing sales and services in Russia and Belarus
I see many claims here that the sanctions don't work or that they are targeting the wrong people.

Ukrainians on social media are literally begging for more sanctions on Russia. They know Russia and they lived under a Russian-dominated USSR. These sanctions work and put pressure on Russia.

Putin has already walked back from his plans to put a puppet regime in Kyiv.

keewee7··on Red Hat is discontinuing sales and services in Russia and Belarus
Red Hat stopping its commercial services in Russia will not harm dissenters.

Besides the majority of Russians support the war. The so-called "resisters" are a rounding error.

Listen to Ukrainians on social media. They're all calling for total sanctions against Russia.

keewee7··on Parallel Grouped Aggregation in DuckDB
Polars+DuckDB beats Pandas.

Tidyverse (R) is superior for data exploration but R is not fun to deploy and make complex multi job data pipelines.

keewee7··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
Do you happen to be from the Russian minority in these countries?

Actual Latvians and Estonians are far more ready to defend their countries.

keewee7··on Russian channels and bots spying in Ukraine
This is interesting. Russia is outsourcing intelligence gathering to its highly nationalistic tech savvy young people. They're even using Telegram to coordinate bombings and missile attacks.
