keewee7··on Docker 2.0 went from $11M to $135M in 2 years
This article from 2013 might give an indication on why some people choose FOSS even when they can afford the non-FOSS solutions:

The licensing. My God, the licensing. It's not so much the money, as the infernal, mind-bending tax code level complexity involved in making sure all your software is properly licensed: determining what 'level' and 'edition' you are licensed at, who is licensed to use what, which servers are licensed... wait, what? Sorry, I passed out there for a minute when I was attacked by rabid licensing weasels.

I'm not inclined to make grand pronouncements about the future of software, but if anything kills off commercial software, let me tell you, it won't be open source software. They needn't bother. Commercial software will gleefully strangle itself to death on its own licensing terms.

keewee7··on Alpine Linux in the Browser (2020)
It's worth mentioning that the initial version of this didn't use WebAssembly. Bellard literally implemented i386/PC emulation in pure JavaScript (ES5) back in 2011.
keewee7··on India’s caste system limits diversity in science
Why should Google let Tamil ethno-nationalists like Thenmozhi hold a talk?
keewee7··on India’s caste system limits diversity in science
A lot of research into the genetic history of the Indian subcontinent seems to be from the late 90s and early 2000s.

Is there a reason it has stopped? We have gotten a lot better at genetic anthropology since then but for some reason there is very little new research on the genetic history of the Indian subcontinent.

keewee7··on Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals discovered in Sweden
Maybe it's time for the rest of the world to do sustainable rare earth metal mining or end up being more geopolitically subjugated by China and Russia.
keewee7··on Microservices are hard
>Your X is a shit and it crashes every second?

Companies that repeatedly fail to detect and solve this type of problem using automated testing and QA are exactly the companies that lack the sophistication to do distributed microservice architecture.

Learn to do proper CI/CD, end-to-end testing, and logging/metrics on your monolith before you decide to transition to microservices.

keewee7··on House Republicans to vote on bill abolishing IRS, eliminating income tax
You're probably correct if you don't consider Southern Europe and Eastern Germany to be developed.
keewee7··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
In the coming years we will probably see a lot of complicated microservice architectures be replaced by well-designed and optimized Rust (and modern C++) monoliths that use simple replication to scale horizontally.
keewee7··on U.S. stock market returns – a history from the 1870s to 2022
As long as I have been browsing the English-language Internet the overall mood among Americans has been that the S&P500 and US dollar hegemony will collapse in a month.

Why is that? I'm European but the US doesn't seem too different from most of Europe in terms of stability and the risk of unrest.

keewee7··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
>Reddit has a whitelist of a handful sites

That is not true. I have submitted plenty of links from new domains (side projects) to reddit.

keewee7··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
I think Rust/Cargo does this to warn against bad words being used as identifiers.
keewee7··on Automatic1111's GitHub account suspended for "ToS violations" [restored]
A1111 did the following things:

- Made a mod removing all non-white characters in a video game.

- Put black people and artists who draw black people in a category/folder called "n".

- Is allegedly also anti-semitic but I don't think the "((()))" thing is proof of that.

I don't think there is anything Micro$ofty going on. Just a racist being banned.

keewee7··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
OpenAI was conceptualized and founded in 2014/15 to avoid AI being dominated by one country and one company (Google).

That is no longer the case. OpenAI should change their misleading name but it's worth remembering that their original mission statement has been fulfilled by OpenAI, academia, Chinese/European companies alike.

keewee7··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
That is not true. Seismic monitoring show that the explosions were equivalent to several hundred kilograms of explosives. With that much explosives there was no need to remove the concrete. The "concrete removing CIA robots" narrative is only pushed by Russian propaganda accounts.
keewee7··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
As a European I'm glad the CIA/Poland/aliens blew up the pipelines that were funding the Russian invasion.

Even the environmental effect was minor; the methane emission from the leaks had 1/5th of the GHG effect of my small country's, Denmark, annual GHG emission.

keewee7··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
Most heavy US military vehicles like the Abrams can run on gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
keewee7··on Bezos, Gates, Zuck, Behind every “self-made” millionaire is a father with money
The children of millionaire lawyers and doctors also make a lot of noise on social media about "millionaires being the new middle class" and why we should only eat Zuckerberg and Bezos but leave out their wealthy parents.
keewee7··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
This kind of naive thinking is what lead to the West being caught off guard in Ukraine.

Russia and China have been weaponizing space for decades.

keewee7··on “Internet in space” will transform the satellite imagery industry
Russia and China have been weponizing space for decades and they already have working hypersonic missiles.
keewee7··on Ownership of AI-Generated Code Hotly Disputed
Why have so many of these AI models been trained on GPL licensed code? Almost half the controversy could have avoided by ignoring GPL code.

I know that even non-copyleft licenses like the Apache and MIT licenses are copyrighted and require attribution however it would have caused far less controversy than training on GPL licensed code.

keewee7··on 50 years of C, the good, the bad and the ugly [video]
Is there a reason Zig is taking so long to go 1.0? The language itself feels mature.
keewee7··on In 2023, let’s rediscover wrongness
Nah, more often than not the "wrongness" is directly harming society or some vulnerable group of people.

Shows like Ancient Aliens and Ancient Apocalypse are a funnel into a world of conspiracy theories that all end up with anti-semitic conspiracy theories about "Jewish globalist elites" who want to do "white genocide".

keewee7··on Instagram is threatening legal action against Pixelfed
It's not just the filter names. Their UI also looks identical to Instagram.

Why are they copying Instagram 1:1 when the Instagram UX sucks so much?

keewee7··on Maids trafficked and sold to wealthy Saudis on black market
When exactly has Western media been soft on Saudi Arabia? They have always been portrayed as a backwards country that oppresses women, kills LGBT people, and since 2014 Saudi Arabia has also been heavily criticized for their war in Yemen. There were also BBC/Channel4 documentaries from more than a decade ago about how Saudi Arabia was indirectly funding the radicalization of Muslims in Europe.
keewee7··on Sanjay Shah to face extradition for stealing $1.8B from Danish tax payers
There is more about his scam on his Wikipedia:

keewee7··on WireGuard for the ESP32
I only meant IoT devices. Most embedded systems that don't have WiFi/BLE requirements are probably using ARM32, MSP430 or AVR.
keewee7··on WireGuard for the ESP32
It's interesting how the ESP32 has become the de facto IoT MCU used in almost all new IoT products.

Other companies like TI and STMicro had their own cheap WiFi/BLE MCUs but their devkits used to be too expensive for hobbyists and students. But the Chinese startup behind the ESPxx chips made sure that their devkits were cheap enough for hobbyists and students and through that influence they now also dominate the professional industry.

keewee7··on Tesla’s 2022 Collapse Hits 69% After Deepest Selloff Since April
American right-wingers should stop pretending they only have a problem with the T in LGBT.

In the past few months they have gone full 1950s and are back to accusing gay men of being groomers/pedophiles.

keewee7··on Tell HN: Thanks and hats off to all the non software engineers
China doesn't care about patents and will manufacture your design for 1/3rd of the price.
keewee7··on US Government demands direct police access to European biometric data [pdf]
>Edit: what’s with the downvotes?

You're pushing a baseless conspiracy theory. There is no evidence that Saudi authorities were involved in 9/11.
