kdmtctl··on Mir Books – Books from the Soviet Era
Math and physics are more theoretical in curriculum and less students can grasp, but ones who do perform better. So, higher input filter, earlier talent detection. Western education is more applied to a business, Russian is more like a generic theory. This makes Western schools prepare to develop, Russian to research. Note this is a generic distinction, MIT and Stanford are higher standards and provide access to field practitioners so my take it is genuinely provide more quality than MSU or Baumanka alike.
kdmtctl··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
So, we'll have Opus 5 soon which is "as close to Fable 5 as possible". This is a good thing for the community)
kdmtctl··on Domain expertise has always been the real moat
I'm such a generalist. During all my career, from support to decades of C-level, I was equally challenged by domain and IT people for not being deep in everything. But whenever they couldn't come up with a compromise, I was the person who always offered it. Doing purely consulting work now, mostly implementation. And this "little bit of everything" can be strongly multiplied by AI tools, since I already know what exactly I want to achieve, I just need speed and a cross-check.
kdmtctl··on Claude Opus 4.8
This command would be not so bad for not a billionaire me.
kdmtctl··on How to run Qwen 3.5 locally
Will it run on an old 4xV100 Tesla rig? Looking something to start with, this can be available, but too inexperienced to understand all fp* nuances.
kdmtctl··on Show HN: Look Ma, No Linux: Shell, App Installer, Vi, Cc on ESP32-S3 / BreezyBox
How do you manage display sharing using it? Another device? I have a bunch of refurb servers, which I'd like to keep access to not waiting for an engineer to visit it. The budget is tight so proper KVM is not an option.
kdmtctl··on Bluetooth 6.2 – more responsive, improves security, USB comms, and testing
I use AirPods with my MacBook all the time and no one is ever complained. Does Apple have a secret sauce?
kdmtctl··on I Want You to Understand Chicago
The outcome is not the same. Regardless of how many will be deported, this will normalize the modus operandi. Been there. Aesthetic is crucial if you don't want it to be turned on you some day.
kdmtctl··on I Want You to Understand Chicago
They are not receiving any benefits. They are not legal literally. Work for cash. No safety net except peers who are often abusive. There are lot of this in EU, just not this visible.
kdmtctl··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
Typo. "Feature set", referring to your comment. Functions of software. Quoted below, source is widely available.

“The notion of goods with digital elements should refer to goods that incorporate or are inter-connected with digital content or a digital service in such a way that the absence of that digital content or digital service would prevent the goods from performing their functions.” — Recital 14, Directive (EU) 2019/771.

kdmtctl··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
This is not legal to sell a finished product which has a license time bomb, I suppose.

Google and Apple can change the future set but they do not brick the device which was discussed and it works as advertised at the moment of purchase.

kdmtctl··on Vacuum bricked after user blocks data collection – user mods it to run anyway
In EU you have the right to use bundled software as long as you own the appliance. Not sure this is true for US.
kdmtctl··on Testing “Exotic” P2P VPN
It uses the same plain WG which doesn't pass across borders by the rules of this experiment.
kdmtctl··on SSH3: Faster and rich secure shell using HTTP/3
It can be actually hidden only paired with an HTTPS server, since CT new certificate logs entries are pretty strong indicator that a host deserves to be "visited".
kdmtctl··on Signal Secure Backups
This. The former core user base would prefer the definitive history destruction to a reliable backup. But this audience doesn't grow this fast anymore.
kdmtctl··on Nepal moves to block Facebook, X, YouTube and others
It's changes the data flow. Transit connections are magnitudes expensive than local exchanges, and you can even connect to neighborhood country exchanges on lower prices than serve all TikTok through Ams/Fra. Since VPN is encrypted you can't reroute its content by your rules.

Also mentioned here, larger corps have local caches which unloads transit significantly. Google does this for YouTube everywhere.

kdmtctl··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
You have just described a singularity point for this line of business. Which could happen. Or not.
kdmtctl··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
They do not benefit from having control, they risk if they don't. This is fundamental.

I do love freedom but such freedom will come with a disclaimer. You do want to use a bank app unsigned and you do not want the bank to check your latest SIM card replacement. You understand and assess the risk and will not discriminate the bank for any loss occurred. Same with Netflix and piracy.

This is fair.

kdmtctl··on Grok Code Fast 1
VSCode has the best copilot integration, but I found that Zed can perfectly use my subscription too, with even better results and endless "are you still here?"

They don't support Grok yet, though. It starts from a small "x", and it is ruined the deserialization. So could be a chance the pull request will miss "free trial" deadline for Grok Fast in Copilot, for this particular case.

kdmtctl··on Signal – An Ethical Replacement for WhatsApp
It does sync some timeframe in the recent versions.
kdmtctl··on Ditching Obsidian and building my own
Directus is not eternal either. They are OSS, but you can't support it yourself forever. For a such a long run this looks like a controversial choice for me.
kdmtctl··on Getting AI to write good SQL
Copilot has it in preview. I found it looks deeper on devops tasks in the Agent mode. But context matters, you should include everything and it will push. Now I switch between Cloude and Gemini when one of them starts going circles. Gemini certainly could have more context but Copilot clearly limits it. Didn't try with Studio key though, only default settings.
kdmtctl··on DNS piracy blocking orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS respond differently
That will ruin the stocks. No need to use back doors, court order is pretty easy to get especially if the site in question is true malicious.
kdmtctl··on DNS piracy blocking orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS respond differently
Using Yandex for DNS. You will get the same filters.
kdmtctl··on DNS piracy blocking orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS respond differently
If you set your own authoritative DNS, you could use it only for your zones. To use DoH, etc for the whole traffic, you need a recursive server. Unbound is a recursive server with some rudimentary authoritative extensions.
kdmtctl··on DNS piracy blocking orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS respond differently
It will help with spoofing but will not protect from eavesdropping. Most of the times cloudflare is a least dangerous adversary.
kdmtctl··on US vs. Google amicus curiae brief of Y Combinator in support of plaintiffs [pdf]
It could also mean that you can't invest indefinite amount of storage to ever growing user base, if storage metrics would not improve indefinitely. There is a break down and 15GB cap is nothing comparing with Google Photos cut, which is a strong sign that storage is the problem even for behemoths.
kdmtctl··on The FBI Seized This Woman's Life Savings–Without Telling Her Why
Actually, this fund is THE money printer. Ever increasing in value, not directly usable but great for accounting. It can be used to balance real spending.
kdmtctl··on The indieweb doesn't need to “take off”
Most former Soviet families do this every autumn. Storage is the problem, not labor.
kdmtctl··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
That was my first thought. The goal was fear. Here it is.
