kdazzle··on The Case Against Denormalization
Denormalization and nested data structures. Sometimes we need to spend a little more time thinking about data models rather than just dumping the original json into mongo and working around that for eternity.

kdazzle··on Total Crap – A magazine written by AI
Say what you will about McSweeney’s, but to me they can ride _Macroeconomic Changes Have Made it Impossible for me to Want to Pay You_ [1] for another couple of years.

[1] - https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/macroeconomic-changes-ha...

kdazzle··on How to design software architecture for startups
Yeah, I wish every language had something as nice as DRF. I’ve never had issues with it for a few different multi-year codebases.
kdazzle··on Contrast Rebellion
First time I read an argument against all black in design was this 2012 article. Something about it not being a color found in nature. Then, yeah, some people seemed to interpret it as “use gray on gray”.

kdazzle··on Ask HN: Technology/creative books and games for my daughter (7 years)
Sounds awesome! Reminds me of Gizmos and Gadgets [1]. My kid is also 7, and part of me just wants to push all my fav 90s games like the aughts never existed.

kdazzle··on Building GitHub with Ruby on Rails
Same here, I came into a project that had been started months before and found that they were spending weeks reimplementing stuff that comes out of the box in Django. But not as well.
kdazzle··on Steel Threads are a powerful but obscure software design approach
Isnt this just the strangler pattern? https://martinfowler.com/bliki/StranglerFigApplication.html

Not sure I agree with the steel thread metaphor

kdazzle··on It's probably time to stop recommending Clean Code (2020)
I dont know - i think it still holds up. It just takes a little experience to learn to not be so literal with it.
kdazzle··on Don’t teach during code reviews
I’m with you. If I don’t think a chunk of code is readable, I’m not going to rewrite it all for them off the bat. I’ll just say that it’s not clear and could probably use some cleaning up. And they can either push back, or do something on their own, or ask if I have anything in mind, or seethe silently and ignore me. If it’s complicated or seems like they’re struggling then I’ll ask if they want to pair on a solution.

Otherwise it’s kind of like - “why didn’t you just do this yourself if you had something so specific in mind?”

kdazzle··on Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff
Hiring freeze, for one. Then anyone that leaves won’t be replaced and headcount will (presumably) go down trauma free.
kdazzle··on Appalachian Apple hunter who rescued 1k ‘lost’ varieties (2021)
I actually bought a box of Cox Orange online from this orchard in VT. They were good, but the descriptions are always better.

https://www.scottfarmvermont.com/coxs-orange-pippin

Salt Spring Island, BC also seems to have a big heirloom apple thing going on, for any Van folks. (ex: I bought a couple of trees from this orchard https://www.saltspringapplecompany.com/)

kdazzle··on Databricks cofounders weren’t interested in starting a business (2021)
Ugh - the disappearing clusters are frustrating
kdazzle··on Ask HN: When to make the jump to freelance/consultant?
> better to start own business when favorable environment, for example, when see macroeconomic grow (now recession, and high probability of crisis),

I could actually see the opposite being true. Lots of companies might not want to hire FTEs right now due to a maybe recession, but there's still a lot of work to be done, so they just use contractors instead.

kdazzle··on How to improve Python packaging
I’m biased, but I do like Python’s package management much better than Node. Even just regular old virtualenvs. Can’t tell you how many times deleting the node packages dir and reinstalling fixes a weird issue, but that’s happened very rarely for me on the python side.

Also, having to comb through a bunch of node packages of dubious quality to find some sort of standard approach happens way too often. Like take python requests vs axios.

kdazzle··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
Very interesting point. It really reminds me of that Borges story where someone in the 20th century rewrites Don Quixote word for word, and the critics think it’s far better than the original.

kdazzle··on Why Is Tipping Everywhere You Checkout?
People working in restaurants in the US have a lower minimum wage than the rest of the country. So letting them do their work for like $3/hr doesnt really cut it
kdazzle··on Why Is Tipping Everywhere You Checkout?
I don’t know about the low-wage, high-tipping argument. Having worked at a chain coffee shop, I was paid minimum wage and would usually make less than $1/hr in tips by the time it was split across everyone else. So maybe it works better for like 3rd wave coffee shops
kdazzle··on The evolution of the data engineer role
The Delta Lake is a marketing term from Databricks to, in part, market their Delta file format and all the clusters you’ll be spinning up.

Delta files are actually an amazing format though. At their most basic, they took Parquet files (columnar database) and let you stream off them really easily. Which takes a lot of complexity out of your pipelines - dont need Kafka for everything, don’t need to figure out when new rows get added (or a whole other set of jobs around that).

But using Delta files really can change the way you develop pipelines (and ML pipelines), so I forgive them for inventing a new term.

kdazzle··on We Burned Down Players’ Houses in Ultima Online
Man, I ran across PK Ghost the other week. So many memories. Actually, looking back, it was a pretty innovative webcomic.

https://www.imanewbie.com/

kdazzle··on Nightdrive
Thats’s awesome. Kind of reminds me of this vector-y 80s game I had as a little kid - the Tomy Turbo [1]. I’ve been trying to make something similar myself but keep pushing it aside. Anyways, nice work - it looks great!

kdazzle··on ImaNewbie Does Brittania (1998)
For Ultima Online lovers in the early aughts. Also maybe an early example of webcomix.
kdazzle··on The DynamoDB Paper
> The only real time and effort is the architectural decisions you make up front, and that's about it

And dont forget about the time spent fixing what could have been caught by types and regular old db constraints (for most applications)

kdazzle··on Why did Heroku fail?
> Salesforce is not particularly focused on integrated acquired products - its interested in selling them largely as is to existing customers

Definitely true, but SF is extremely interested in marketing its unintegrated products as fully integrated.

See for example: SF marketing cloud, where the only integration is an iframe for your SF session and a fresh branded subdomain (mc.exacttarget.com chefs kiss)

kdazzle··on Why did Heroku fail?
> [Github A]ctions and much of the GitHub turn around happened long before the acquisition

Interesting - someone at either MS or Github told me that the Azure DevOps team moved over to GitHub to create Actions. But maybe I misheard or both versions are true.

kdazzle··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
I use Ecosia, and the results are usually good enough. Google’s results are often better, but now there are only like 4 results on the first page.
kdazzle··on We’re the founders of Substack, we just launched an iOS app. AUA
Lol, not a question, but I love that the first release notes are “minor fixes and improvements”
kdazzle··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
> Also, absolutely zero of the standard base of Duck Duck Go users are the kind of people who don't understand what a Russian state controlled news site is, and why one would have to be careful reading it.

You sure about that? I keep hearing about the Jan 6ers being big DDG users. They seem like the types that aren't too savvy when it comes to misinformation.

kdazzle··on Don't you lecture me with your thirty dollar website
Oh, then you’ll love the shady url generator - http://shadyurl.com/ -> http://www.5z8.info/inject_worm_r3l9em_gain-inches
kdazzle··on Ask HN: What to do instead of drinking alcohol?
N/A beer has gotten surprisingly good over the last couple years. The brand I’ve been getting around here is Wellbeing - I like their Amber and Pale ales
kdazzle··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
The Opposing Shore by Julien Gracq - the writing is really beautiful. Like every sentence is poetic and the descriptions often these very original metaphors.

I read him for the first time immediately before the pandemic with A Balcony In the Forest, which is also great.
