kdazzle··on When did Google get so weird?
Waiting for all the data we give them in these chats to be sold even more.

kdazzle··on If you start writing today, there's no way to know if you can write without AI
I had a professor who said that writing is thinking. If you outsource writing to an AI, there’s no thought in it.

Using AI for any part of the writing process has a way of seeping into the rest of it, so I try to stay away from using it at all when writing.

kdazzle··on The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing
Man, Jon and Vangelis is a surprisingly good album
kdazzle··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
I have heard this also. I still find it wild that Azure DevOps had that feature long before GitHub
kdazzle··on If you started a company two years ago, many assumptions are no longer true
> the bottleneck is no longer engineering, it’s ____

90% of blog articles created in the last two years are probably dead on arrival

kdazzle··on Eclipse GlassFish: This Isn't Your Father's GlassFish
Oh, I assumed that was a joke. I’ll have to check my privilege
kdazzle··on 3D-Knitting: The Ultimate Guide
Fully fashioned hand knit stuff looks great! I just haven’t seen a wholegarment machine knit shirt that looks nice. Maybe because the yarn isn’t as chunky.
kdazzle··on 3D-Knitting: The Ultimate Guide
I'm kind of in this space - 3d knitting is pretty interesting, but knitting a sweater like that takes a long time (I forget how long, but I think it's 1-2 hours), so it's not really a solution for working at any sort of scale. Unless you build up inventory or have a ton of machines. But the machines are super expensive compared to regular knitting machines.

I also think that wholegarment knits look kind of cheap and that sewing actually adds structural integrity and durability to a garment.

But anything knitting or clothes related is really fun and challenging and good for them for making a business out of it.

kdazzle··on Tell HN: GitHub Having Issues
My god. I hope the constant refreshing helps.

Seems like it would be increasingly difficult to make a case for switching to GitHub.

kdazzle··on GitHub Actions is slowly killing engineering teams
Pretty sure someone at MS told me that Actions was rewritten by the team who wrote Azure DevOps. So bureaucracy would be a feature.

That aside, GH Actions doesn’t seem any worse than GitLab. I forget why I stopped using CircleCI. Price maybe? I do remember liking the feature where you could enter the console of the CI job and run commands. That was awesome.

I agree though that yaml is not ideal.

kdazzle··on Parents Are Going Broke from Their Kids' Sushi Obsession
The WSJ interviewing and quoting the kids is priceless
kdazzle··on What an unprocessed photo looks like
Exactly - film photographers heavily process(ed) their images from the film processing through to the print. Ansel Adams wrote a few books on the topic and they’re great reads.

And different films and photo papers can have totally different looks, defined by the chemistry of the manufacturer and however _they_ want things to look.

kdazzle··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
I havent been through the US process in a while, but usually that is allowed if your application is processing. You just can’t leave the country.
kdazzle··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
There was just an article in the NYT where ICE is arresting people at the end of their green card interviews for essentially no reason.

kdazzle··on Modern cars are spying on you. Here's what you can do about it
I worked on the data platform at a smaller car co, and there were tight controls around getting access to precise geo data, and there were strong privacy advocates at higher levels. Wasn’t a perfect system, but “spying” would be far from what I saw
kdazzle··on Be Like Clippy

Or dare i say…ad clippynem?

kdazzle··on Feedback doesn't scale
Maybe, but a 200 person company isn’t really that big. The CEO should probably get over themselves if they think they couldnt possibly know everyone at least a little bit.
kdazzle··on Feedback doesn't scale
I dont think the solution to not knowing people in your company is to create bureaucracy. Ie - only hanging with 10 executives and a focus group. Get out there and talk to people for a few minutes - at the office or wherever.
kdazzle··on We cut our Mongo DB costs by 90% by moving to Hetzner
I'd probably use a jsonfield in postgres for data that i knew was going to be unstructured. meanwhile, other columns can join and have decent constraints and indexes.
kdazzle··on We cut our Mongo DB costs by 90% by moving to Hetzner
I’m curious about the resilience bit. Are you planning on some sort of active-active setup with mongo? I found it difficult on AWS to even do active-passive (i guess that was docdb), since programatically changing the primary write node instance was kind of a pain when failing over to a new region.

Going into any depth with mongo mostly taught me to just stick with postgres.

kdazzle··on Angel Investors, a Field Guide
Well, sounds like a VC but without a good bit of the stress and hassle. Like you wouldnt have to gin up money from LPs
kdazzle··on Pg_lake: Postgres with Iceberg and data lake access
Snowflake is expensive, even compared to Databricks, and you pay their pre-AWS discount storage price while they get the discount and pocket the difference as profit
kdazzle··on React vs. Backbone in 2025
I think Backbone was a bit before Coffeescript.

Haha, coffeescript was so hot for a minute

kdazzle··on Django: One ORM to rule all databases
Yeah, if you remember to use it properly. SQL injection was pretty rampant before ORMs and web frameworks started being used everywhere.

ORMs let anyone make CRUD apps without needing to worry about that sort of thing. Also helps prevent issues from slipping through on larger teams with more junior developers. Or, frankly, even “senior” developers that don’t really understand web security.

kdazzle··on Django: One ORM to rule all databases
Mostly, I think, the problem is SQL injection, and raw SQL is a great place for people to forget to escape their strings.
kdazzle··on Fivetran in talks with dbt Labs over multibillion-dollar big-data merger
Not sure why anyone would pay billions for dbt, but who am I to say
kdazzle··on Atlassian is acquiring The Browser Company
If the AI browser can use Jira for us, then this is a step forward for humanity.
kdazzle··on Ask HN: Small Ideas vs. Big Ideas?
I don’t think it’s a binary thing that you can just pick. I think you need to have experience to know what the big ideas are for an industry - especially now that the low-hanging web 2.0 ideas seem to be pretty well picked through.

You mention Zuckerberg - even Facebook was made through having experience in the right market and taking an existing product to the next level, and probably a bunch of iteration along the way.
