karrotwaltz··on No "Hello", No "Quick Call", and No Meetings Without an Agenda
> There is another possibility - you're lazy and selfish, so you don't care how your interruptions affect others because your questions need to be answered right now with minimal effort on your end. But I'm sure that's not the case.

> So, when I answer your "Quick call?" with "What's the problem?", that's really for your own good :wink face:

Please do not ever write sentences like this in a professional context where you are not friends with the recipients, it's terrible.

It sets the tone to "adult to children discussion where I think that I am smarter than you" which is the last thing you want when you try to solve on of your pain point.

One the other hand if you want me to avoid interacting with you as much as I can that would be spot on.

karrotwaltz··on Getting around website paywalls with devtools alone
Javascript killer: https://pastebin.com/utE3275J

Yes, I'm using it as a bookmarklet. I'm using firefox but I think it should work the same for other browsers.

karrotwaltz··on Getting around website paywalls with devtools alone
I use this JS bookmarklet to remove fixed elements and restore scrolling, it works most of the time:

I also have one to kill all running javascript and remove all event listeners, it works wonders when you are redirected to a paywall / login page after a few seconds.

karrotwaltz··on What Is the “Mffam” Policy?
What if the owner has a different opinion than you of what is offending and what is not? They get to remove sites you think are good and keep sites you think are bad.

In the end, the only fair and objective way to filter content is the rule of law, as it applies to everyone equally. Every subjective decision will always offend some people.

I personally think the linked page "the long game" [1] found in this page is more interesting on this topic than the original link.

karrotwaltz··on OVH Cloud shuts down Guerrilla Mail
I use bugmenot for websites that require an account to browse or to download stuff (looking at you Qt), it works most of the time
karrotwaltz··on Windows 10 could start bullying people into using a Microsoft account to install
I think it's possible in professional edition but you have to be offline on home edition. (I messed up and installed pro for a home key, so I did it back to back with same ISO)
karrotwaltz··on Windows 10 could start bullying people into using a Microsoft account to install
I reinstalled a computer about a month ago, same thing but I didn't have to mess with BIOS settings, going back 2 steps and disconnecting the wifi worked.
karrotwaltz··on LastPass stores passwords so securely, not even its users can access them
With BitWaden FF, you can use Ctrl+Shift+L to auto fill your most recently used account for the current website.

Hope it helps.

karrotwaltz··on Users hate change
> Every change causes people to question why they use the site in the first place.

I was using twitter to follow very few, high quality feeds, and with this new update it was made clear that the intended usage is the opposite. No more twitter for me, I'm back to good old RSS feeds.

Beside that, I can't believe anyone would find the new design better than the old one on a monitor, the menu has more presence than the actual tweets.

karrotwaltz··on Why are large companies so difficult to rescue (regarding internal technology)
Is this really a style though? I always assumed it was due to writers being non-native english speakers, and applying their primary language's noun gendering to english (In my case, in French all nouns are gendered)
karrotwaltz··on Investigating the impact removing password masking has on consumer trust (2014)
Reminded me of NIST's digital policy guidelines (from 2017, so quite a while after this page was published):

> In order to assist the claimant in successfully entering a memorized secret, the verifier SHOULD offer an option to display the secret — rather than a series of dots or asterisks — until it is entered. This allows the claimant to verify their entry if they are in a location where their screen is unlikely to be observed.

karrotwaltz··on Password expiration is dead, long live passwords
Not so long ago I had to register to a website allowing a comma (or was it a semicolon?) in a password during registration but refusing to login using said password. Fun times.
karrotwaltz··on It's time to replace GIFs with AV1 video
On your second link I can directly right click and save, on others (like Twitter) I just have to shift right click to bypass the blocking scripts. (Firefox desktop with multiple privacy extensions)
karrotwaltz··on Aphantasia: 'My mind's eye is blind'
Tall, round face, short hair, wearing glasses, with mustache and beard, thick eyebrows. There are still plenty of ways to describe someone's face without using colors, but to be perfectly honest I'm terrible at describing people I can easily recognize.
karrotwaltz··on Aphantasia: 'My mind's eye is blind'
A bit off topic, but I hope I'll find I'm not alone: my "mind" is color-blind to some degree.

It's very hard for me to remember colors, if someone cut their hair I'll notice it easily, but if they change color (e.g blonde to brown), I'll have an unsettling feeling but it's very hard for me to pinpoint what has changed.

When I'm asked to describe a person I'm extremely unlikely to give hair or skin color, and I can't even tell the color of the eyes of anyone of my family right now, I just don't know.

When I remember colors it's more like I remember a textual description. My eyes are green, I know because I remember it being written on my ID, not because I've seen them in the mirror this morning.

karrotwaltz··on Quake II RTX: Re-Engineering a Classic with Ray Tracing Effects on Vulkan
> it's actually due to many factors

To add to this point, at 1:35 in the video they compare with / without volumetric ligthing except, well, volumetric lighting has been used in games for a while now.

The "before" should show a non-RTX lighting instead of just nothing at all.

karrotwaltz··on Non-Euclidean Worlds Engine [video]
The first time I ever seen this portal gimmick in a game was in the Wheel of Time game (released in 99), although it was used only once in the whole game my mind was blown.

karrotwaltz··on Ads just work, no matter what you think
I'd rather say that ads "work" in the sense that you don't have to intently watch or listen to an ad for it to affect your brain, just seeing or hearing it is enough.

Now, if "working" means you actually buy something, then yes I have to agree, most ads are not very effective.

karrotwaltz··on Amazon scraps secret AI recruiting tool that showed bias against women
From the article:

> Gender bias was not the only issue. Problems with the data that underpinned the models’ judgments meant that unqualified candidates were often recommended for all manner of jobs, the people said. With the technology returning results almost at random, Amazon shut down the project, they said.

It looks like the bias wasn't the only flaw.

karrotwaltz··on Mmm, Pi-hole
Someone very concerned about ads whitelists can also use multiple ad blocking extensions.

It would take every creator to accept the bribe for the ads to go through. Well, if the extension starts injecting ads it's another story...

karrotwaltz··on Mmm, Pi-hole
It can be easy to bypass by having an IP / another DNS server hardcoded as a fallback. I would bet that some devices are already doing it.
karrotwaltz··on Programming in the Adult Entertainment Industry Is Broken
Bundling a physical good with a digital one has been done before, so if I understand correctly the only problem here is that the usage of a t-shirt is purely to circumvent the ban from the bank (due to high chargeback rate)...

In that case, and theoretically, bundling the physical good with a digital access right from the start would be perfectly legal right?

It would still be a dodgy way to reduce chargebacks, but assuming no bank ban occurs, it shouldn't be a breach of contract.

karrotwaltz··on GCC 8.2 Released
I've heard a lot of good about QtCreator lately, from multiple people, I'll give it a try soon.

Still, some parsable output would be great for many cases, a CI with diagnostic on a web page for example

karrotwaltz··on GCC 8.2 Released
The most verbose type of template errors I can think of are instantiation errors with multiple candidates and type deduction failures. In these cases there won't be any elision so it won't help much.

I still hope one day we'll see GCC & clang implement some kind of parsable diagnostic output (e.g JSON). Simply folding all the candidates on a UI would be a massive step forward in reading template errors.

karrotwaltz··on Mastodon WTF timeline (2017)
IMO it was also a naming problem. GamerGate doesn't refer to anything precisely, it just encompass the whole mess. The ones who had interesting claims should have forked the movement under an unambigous name.

It was impossible to be fully pro or anti gamergate because both sides had so many claims and their fair share of trolls.

karrotwaltz··on Microsoft acquires Github
MSVC's stdlib is still a headache, just see the /std flag[1] which only appeared in msvc2017: you can either have C++14 with some C++17 features, or C++ "latest" which means 17 and missing features.

EDIT: just noticed the article says it was also added to 2013, but my 2015 doesn't support it so idk.

I can conceive PowerShell being good as a scripting language, but as a day to day terminal? That would my hell. And the fact that they are forcing so much on it in win10 doesn't help.

They do produce some great things sometimes, I agree, it just doesn't average out as positive IMO.
