karlshea··on CSS Grid Lanes
What you’re looking for is described in the article as “bricks” (vs “waterfall”) and is also supported.
karlshea··on How to Synthesize a House Loop
I've seen a couple of TikToks with someone doing live coding with this same tool and it was really cool to watch because they really knew it well, but like you said it was bog-standard house/techno.
karlshea··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
What's condescending is telling a whole generation of people who are working two jobs and barely able to make rent to "save".

I'm older than you and now doing fine AND able to save/invest but after multiple once-in-a-lifetime events that reset all of my progress each time, the last thing I need to hear from some out-of-touch old person is bullshit avocado toast pull yourself up by your bootstraps comments.

karlshea··on Is America's jobs market nearing a cliff?
I'm gonna have to hold your hand when I tell you this: when you tell the younger generation to "save" or "invest" they are going to walk away from that conversation knowing they were just speaking with one of the most mind-numbingly naive Olds they're going to encounter in probably the next several months.

Please, if you ever want any respect from anyone younger than you ever again in your entire life, do not say those words again.

karlshea··on Aggressive bots ruined my weekend
If you’re running a well-behaved crawler (for example one that respects nofollow, and doesn’t try every single product filter combination it can find) then fine. If you don’t, then I don’t have any sympathy for the consequences that your niche of the industry caused.

Not everyone has the budget for unlimited bandwidth and compute, and in several of my clients’ cases that’s been >95% of all traffic.

People running these bots with AI/VC capital are just script kiddies that forgot that not every site is a boatload of app servers behind Cloudflare.

karlshea··on Aggressive bots ruined my weekend
A client of mine had this exact problem with faceted search, and putting the site behind Fastly didn’t help since you can’t cache millions of combinations. And they don’t have the budget for more than one origin server. The solution was if you’ve got “bot” in your UA Fastly’s VCL returns a 403 with any facet query param. Problem solved. And it’s not going to break anything, all of the information is still accessible to all of the indexers on the actual product pages.

The facet links already had “nofollow” on them, now I’m just enforcing it.

karlshea··on Aggressive bots ruined my weekend
There were already guidelines, these trash people aren’t following them. That’s why there’s now “sentiment” against them.

karlshea··on Ask HN: Times the world has dodged a bullet
I bet this question would also get a lot of fun answers on the AskHistorians subreddit.
karlshea··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
Flour should be weighed.
karlshea··on Let us git rid of it, angry GitHub users say of forced Copilot features
You’re still falling for it. They have a clear path to vision-only autonomy IN THE BAY AREA.

Let’s see it work in Minnesota in the winter where you can’t see lane markings, everything is white, and the camera lenses immediately get covered with road salt spray.

karlshea··on Nest 1st gen and 2nd gen thermostats no longer supported from Oct 25
The issue that the Nest solved for me was figuring out how long it took for the hot water to get to the radiators, and what the bounce looked like after it got there. It'll stop calling for heat before it reaches the final temp because it will still keep going up.

It doesn't need to be cloud-connected to do so, but that's not a feature I'm aware a $20 Honeywell has.

karlshea··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Been using it for a year or so now and it’s amazing. Noticeably faster than DD and the UI isn’t Electron or whatever’s going on there.
karlshea··on Old payphones get new life, thanks to Vermont engineer
Has cell service reached Black Rock now?
karlshea··on The Crafters of "Andor"
I agree with them, it is stunningly good. And it’s over so you can watch it all in one shot.
karlshea··on Long live American Science and Surplus
When I moved from Milwaukee to Minneapolis I was happy to find Ax-Man existed, but to be fair I’ve only made it in a couple of times. I hope there are still 15 year olds that are amazed when they walk in like I was.

A core memory from back then is the big diver’s helmet way in the back at ASS, and wishing I could buy the weird radar screen/oscilloscope boxes that looked like they came right out of a tank. And how every label for every box of parts or object in the whole store had funny hand lettered descriptions that someone spent a lot of time on.

karlshea··on Minding the gaps: A new way to draw separators in CSS
It should be familiar from the <hr> tag (horizontal rule).
karlshea··on MacBook Air M4
As someone that had a 2011 MacBook Pro for I think 9 years and loved it, be glad you’ve skipped over the whole butterfly keyboard/Touch Bar era.

I now have an M2 Air and have zero complaints, it’s the best computing device I’ve ever owned. You’re going to really enjoy the M4.

karlshea··on Hotline for modern Apple systems
I brought my whole Mac 6 hours away to my aunt's for Thanksgiving one year so I could download a bunch of bigger umm... items off of Hotline since they had brand-new stunningly fast several-megabit cable internet when I just had barely better than dialup ADSL at home. It was amazing.
karlshea··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
That’s an interesting point, I just got some keycaps on Taobao and they were shipped all the way to Chicago with CAINIAO and then handed off directly to UPS.
karlshea··on Garmin's –$40B Pivot
Yes, with maps. The Apple Watch Strava app will record and upload directly or you can import workouts from Apple Health, both give you GPS, HR, etc.

If recorded elsewhere it can depend, but that’s due to Strava being irritating/changing/dropping integration features in the last couple of years and not an Apple ecosystem issue.

Or those people have maps uploaded but have chosen not to make them public?

karlshea··on Hyundai just launched its cheapest EV in Japan
Well that works for you since there is curb charging, that isn't built out here at all. I agree if it was then it would be a non-issue.
karlshea··on Hyundai just launched its cheapest EV in Japan
An EV would start to get pretty irritating if your only option is street parking. I have a garage I could charge one in right now, but most of the people on my block don’t. And if I wanted to move I may not end up with one.
karlshea··on A three month review of kagi search and the orion web browser (2024)
> Google’s interests aren’t aligned in the same way Kagi’s are, but if Kagi can’t keep blogspam out of its search results why are we blaming Google when they also fail to do so?

Because some of Kagi's results come out of the Google index, so Google could be doing at least as good a job as Kagi is and they are not.

karlshea··on 2400 phone providers may be shut down by the FCC for failing to stop robocalls
Spam calls have decreased, spam texts increased.
karlshea··on Since the '60s, Ford has stored cars underground in a Kansas City cave
I think you're right about obscurity preventing a lot of low-grade issues.

There's an interesting building right in downtown Minneapolis that takes up an entire block that I'd passed several times a week for years without even noticing it—it's the operations center for Wells Fargo (and actually it just recently has been sold).

Zero signage and very nondescript, but when I found out what it was some of the physical security around it started to become super obvious. Big bollard "planters" and protection from large vehicles, a lot of cameras, no real obvious lobby.

This is the building, it's fascinating to check out the street view all the way around the block: https://maps.app.goo.gl/UYKnA2Bs9gMQsSwo9

karlshea··on Apple Shares Full iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Repair Manuals
What you can’t do with your Librem 5 is submerge it in water, so you keep using your phone and I’ll take the option with glue.
karlshea··on Support for IPv6
I had a tunnel with them I was using for a while, but ended up turning it off a couple of months ago.

Any request to a CDN will be slower since you’re not hitting the cache closest to your actual ISP, and since it’s “a VPN” a lot of things start to break, need more captchas, or get blocked for you since there’s a higher level of abuse from HE’s tunnel broker IP blocks.

karlshea··on Gallery of Graffti Removals
This reminded me of a pretty funny video of a year-long battle between a person tagging a building and a graffiti removal crew: https://youtu.be/RwK4NmQZe64
