karateka··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?
It’s kind of funny that they can more reliably spit out code that will give an answer than actually output the answer as text. I guess it’s a workaround that works well for many cases
karateka··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular technologies you wish people knew more about?
It's a Japanese phrase related to Buddhism: https://jisho.org/search/gokurakujoudo

Of course they also might just be a fan of J-Pop https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gokuraku_Jodo

karateka··on NZ’s biggest data breach shows retention is the sleeping giant of data security
I must say I always liked being able to use RealMe as kind of a single sign on for multiple sites, it’s a shame it never got more widespread
karateka··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
Hello from New Zealand, just completed my second degree black belt exam in Goju Ryu karate.

Martial arts a big passion of mine, currently I'm trying to internalise a weekend of training (the new things you learn slip away so fast) and thinking about the next step on my M.A journey.

karateka··on Hexwords: Hex colors that are similar to words
I built something very similar a few years ago https://hex-colours.netlify.app/
karateka··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Pretty neat, I also keep a reading list on my personal site but it pales in comparison to what you've built: https://www.mathew-paul.nz/reading-list/

Fighting the urge to improve mine after seeing the variety of implementations in the comments!

karateka··on Woman Discovers Tiddlywink Stuck in Nose for 37 Years After Covid-19 Test
This is the actual source of the story (stuff.co.NZ not stuff.co.NAZ as news18 reports..) https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/125567224/tiddlywink-stuck-...
karateka··on I Got a 'Mild' Breakthrough Case
No need for that, we're doing fine. Most of the country is already on it's way back to normality. The most populous city is still locked down but it's better to be locked down for 2 months than to have the hospitals clogged with Covid patients and have everyone you know getting sick. Looking forward to enjoying another long stretch without restrictions after this!
karateka··on England will be first country to require new homes to include EV chargers
There is a similar policy being debated by the city council in Auckland, New Zealand. Parking spaces for new builds either need to have electric car chargers or have power run to the parking space so that it can be upgraded with a easily. The minimum number of car parking spaces which were previously mandated are also being removed.
karateka··on Fed up with the Mac, I spent six months with a Linux laptop
> Finder is unbelievably bad compared to Nautilus

Whats so bad about finder?

karateka··on The Feminine Physique: On Women's Bodybuilding
Would you care to share any recommendations for alternative programs?
karateka··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
Yeah, as a Kiwi it's a bit annoying to have the local media only compare us to Sweden and places that have had a terrible time with the virus. I'd like to see us compared more with the places you mentioned, as well as Taiwan. If you want to have the best response to the virus you need to look to the other success stories.
karateka··on Tasks.org – Open-source ToDo app for Android with CalDAV sync
I've been debating subscribing to Todoist so I can get notifications, but after seeing this it looks like I've found something better to subscribe to :)

Keep up the good work, this is really feature rich!

karateka··on Linux Sucks 2020
That sounds quite interesting, do you recall what any of those videos are called or who uploaded them?
karateka··on Show HN: XP.css – Windows XP CSS file and framework for building GUIs
Beautiful! I've added it to my list of retro css: https://github.com/matt-auckland/retro-css
karateka··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
1) Built a crappy cordova clone of an Android app I used (ThingCounter) to better suit my needs. It helps me track my reps for kata [1] and set goals to meet by certain dates.

2) Built another cordova app which bundles a load of videos I use as reference for training (Okinawan weapons [2] kata), need to compress the videos better, the app came out at 800MB+.

3) Reading through Automate the Boring Stuff to relearn Python

karateka··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
I'm not sure which timezone you're in but, yesterday (Wed 6 May) in New Zealand we recorded one confirmed case, one probable case and one death.

We still have a ways to go before we're out of the woods. We have some reassuring signs though (many consecutive days of < 10 cases detected).

karateka··on 98.css – design system for building faithful recreations of Windows 98 UIs
I've noticed there are a couple of these now so I threw a quick list up on Github: https://github.com/matt-auckland/retro-css
karateka··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
Not building anything exciting, just a basic app for tracking my kata reps[1]. It's a tool I've wanted for a while and it's giving me a chance to play around with Cordova and Android.

karateka··on Smithsonian Releases 2.8M Images into Public Domain
This is awesome, thanks for building it
karateka··on Ishikawa diagram
I can't believe there is actually such a title as an "Agile Black Belt". Had to Google it to make sure. Not sure Jigoro Kano would be happy to see his belt system used as a marketing buzzword.
karateka··on Efforts to change the Japanese culture of extreme work weeks
Somewhat related: The New Zealand Prime Minister recently took Maternity leave and for most people it was no big deal
karateka··on Recent Books on Dinosaurs
I just finished Steve Brusatte's 'The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs' yesterday and found it to be very engaging. As well as detailing it's namesake, it also introduces many of the tools and methodologies that are used by paleontologists to come to the conclusions about dinosaurs that are in the book.

It also has a great "Notes on sources" chapter at the end of the book that breaks down the authour's sources for each chapter in the book.
