kar1181··on The Awk Programming Language, Second Edition
One of the first utilities I had to get to grips with way back was awk, and it serves me well to this day. Best bang for buck investment of time in my entire career. Even today I still use some variant of awk -F(x) '{print $x}'.
kar1181··on Gandi.net – Pricing Update
Gandi are so gross. Had an issue 5 years back now where their site/my connection glitched and they double charged me. It was the most confrontational support exchange I've had (even to this day), and in the end had to go the chargeback route and move my domains off their service.

Never quite understood it as the attitude persisted even as my complaint was (apparently) escalated.

The chargeback itself sent them into orbit.

kar1181··on Red Hat 30th anniversary
They still host images for the versions of linux I cut my teeth on in the 90s. For that as much as anything I'm really greatful!

Redhat 4.2 Biltmore represent!

kar1181··on AMD Ryzen 5 7600 / Ryzen 7 7700 / Ryzen 9 7900 Linux Performance
One of the big near term beneficiaries is going to be RPCS3. Wonderful deep dive into what AVX512 means for it here - https://whatcookie.github.io/posts/why-is-avx-512-useful-for...
kar1181··on Threeuk is blocking Tutanota
There was a period about 7 years ago where they were fantastic, their 3G/4G network wasn't too bad unless you were out in the sticks, and they were CHEAP, about 13£ for 200 mins/200 texts _unlimited_ data. And the kicker was pretty much unrestricted high speed roaming.

Have since moved over to EE which is better performing and better coverage but much pricier. 3 sadly will fall over in the next couple years I would bet.

kar1181··on Beyond Meat is struggling, and the plant-based meat industry worries
'Plant-based' is such a nice way to hand wave away just how terrible these meat-replacements are.

There is nothing natural about it at all and it's a shame as it's pushed vegetarian offerings off the table, options that are from what I can see healthier and more accessible to a broader consumer base.

kar1181··on Why Twitter didn’t go down: From a real Twitter SRE
For all the hand wringing about keeping the lights on, Twitter more than doubled its headcount in 3 n bit years. I'm not sure anyone knows how much of a skeleton crew is required to keep things ticking along anymore given that sort of hiring binge.
kar1181··on Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
Similar experience here, it was a series of changes, none of which made my experience better and a lot of dodgy privacy affecting TOS updates that caused me to can my paid account.

They never really tried to re-engage me either, and have just continued on since then with a bare bones series of notes while I keep the critical stuff elsewhere.

Shame evernote was the first killer 'cloud native' app for me, the thing I couldn't do without once I had it.

kar1181··on The collapse of FTX and Sam Bankman-Fraud is looking quite spicy for journalism
I'll be shocked if Binance are less than 50% as crooked as FTX.
kar1181··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
If you read up on Tim Willits' time at id it seems like a proper protege took his reigns.

In my early career I lamented not going into games development but goodness what a bullet dodged.

kar1181··on US Export Restrictions, Intel Layoffs, Applied Materials, and TSMC
Very interesting Twitter thread on this here https://twitter.com/jordanschnyc/status/1580889341265469440?...

Pretty dramatic stuff but unsure how this will benefit the US since obviously to have this much western talent and IP the Chinese weee investing heavily. Remains to be seen if the west is going to do likewise.

kar1181··on Observable transitions to paid plan for private notebooks
The SaaS crunch continues. I don't have an objective datapoint but over the past few weeks have noticed many of the 'free' apps I use have made significant changes to the free tier and increased pricing.
kar1181··on Canonical shows ads in the Ubuntu CLI
Getting ready to be acquired by Microsoft I guess. I've spent a lot of time with Ubuntu it's been a faithful friend for so long but I do wonder what the 10+ year roadmap looks like for Canonical and maybe this is an indication.
kar1181··on A step-by-step guide to our solar system’s demise
Ganymede sounds like it will be great!
kar1181··on Usborne computer and coding books from the 1980s
This is how I learned to program these books were so ubiquitous in the 80s even my (very_ rural Australian) school library had a few. I’m only had a Vic 20 so had to translate the listings that tended to be aimed at the c64.

So many careers had their origin in these books.

kar1181··on Cloudflare had a partial outage
Not having fun right now, but this brings home just how reliant so much of the internet is on a very few very big service providers.
kar1181··on “It Is Getting Worse. People Are Leaving”
I get the feeling the person that wrote it is not of the generation many here are.

I really enjoyed the style personally (millennial...).

kar1181··on Ask HN: What Has Happened to Twitter?
I unfollow / mute or move to a 'news and politics' list anyone saying anyting political more than 3 times in a frame of time I notice.

That has been transformative for my enjoyment of the 'main feed'. That and sorting by recent - even if you have to keep re-toggling it.

kar1181··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
This was my first thought. "Oh no".
kar1181··on Microsoft to Acquire Activision Blizzard
Bobby Kotick really wanted to retire.
kar1181··on 80386DX ISA single board microcomputer
I wish I had more upvotes to give for this. I started wondering (completely naively) how hard would it be to just go ahead and design a motherboard for an old x86 CPU from scratch.

Impossibly hard, though clearly not for everyone. What an incredible effort.

kar1181··on Tesla opens charging network to other EVs for the first time
One benefit of Tesla (for Tesla inc) opening up their charging network is it provides less incentive for other providers to create new charging points. Tesla have plenty incentive as they are by far the dominant charging provider currently and can continue to expand potentially realising a monopoly on charging infrastructure. If they end up with such a huge lead over the patchwork of competitors then it’s going to give them loads of leverage.
kar1181··on Footage of Australian Raven Attacking a Wing Drone in Canberra, Australia
Even the Australian wildlife will not accept bad coffee! Bit like how Starbucks got ran out of Adelaide.
kar1181··on The Linux Distributions of 1992
The ancient (read 90s) distros are a lot of fun to play with. Redhat still have a lot of their legacy distributions available and they are installable on vmware. You can learn a heck of a lot with really early distributions. I remember how complicated they seemed at the time but compared to nowadays it's pretty easy to have all the system components in your head at any one time.

I spent a week or so upgrading component by component redhat 5.0 (hurricane) to be able to run a more modern version of glibc learning a lot about the c runtime stack under linux in the process.

kar1181··on The Australian federal government is planning to de-anonymize the internet
Disclaimer - I'm Australian. There's something really weird about the contemporary Australian culture that's seems to be permitting increasingly authoritarian governance.

If think if you asked my grandparents what defined 'being Australian' it would be been belief in freedom, mateship and irreverence of authority.

kar1181··on Apple agrees to settle potential class action suit by U.S. developers
Hopefully that actually hits someone's bank account unlike the Equifax settlement which only really hit the laywers'
kar1181··on New Leadership at Blizzard
Unfortunately Blizzard is done.

There's some debate to be had if that's a bad thing, but it's now a brand and IP holding company with some in-house development.

kar1181··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Ironically I do not buy books from Amazon due to the atrocious quality of their 'print on demand' titles. These look like they are printed with a 5 year old heavily abused inkjet.

Part of the appeal of reading deadtree is the paper feel, smell and type quality. Majority of paper backs from amazon are nigh unreadable.

kar1181··on Tesla Model 3 Owners Are the Happiest Car Owners, According to Consumer Reports
I’ve had my model 3 since Jan and like most, it’s had it’s share of issues. It is also, certainly, the least well built car I’ve ever owned.

But gosh I love driving it. It’s a pleasure.

I have driven a lot of the current crop of competing BEVs and they just aren’t as fun.

kar1181··on Why We’re Freaking Out About Substack
I don't know but I've paid for a couple substacks in the past few months, I've not paid for a newspaper in 20 years.

It's like getting someone to cook just for you - hyper targeted content. A newspaper is like a buffet, and these days a not very nutritious one.
