kailuowang··on Google Is Winning on Every AI Front
Maybe it's an Gemini advance only feature but you can generate audio overview right there in gemini interface.

> Lots of travel...It’s hard being away from two little kids, but each trip turned out to be worth it.

Enough said.

kailuowang··on Hello Mac OS X Tiger
Yeah I was there. Some people may think it's just the norm in the old times. It's not. It's just Apple obsession with being "user friendly", and for some reason, they think Gui is more friendly for programmers than code.
kailuowang··on Kodak Alaris warns the TSA's new airport CT scanners can damage undeveloped film
I have been traveling with a Filmguard bag. Sometimes they take it out and ask for a hand inspection, sometimes they don't they rarely insist on scanning the films themselves outside the bag. Regardless never check-in your films. Nothing can protect them from the powerful scan for check-in luggages.

400 hrs of commercials a year? How much TV are these kids watching a day?
kailuowang··on Bye Bye Mongo, Hello Postgres
>Since migrating to AWS we’ve had two significant outages due to database problems, each preventing publication on theguardian.com for at least an hour.

This happened to us numerous times before and after we migrated to their Atlas platform. We are a major streaming company with more than 120M registered user. Disclosure, we are moving away from MongoDB as well.

kailuowang··on The US has spent $1.5 trillion on war since Sept 11 attacks

kailuowang··on Basic Category Theory for Scala Programmers
I wrote introductory blog post answer that. https://tech.iheart.com/why-fp-its-the-composition-f585d17b0... TLDR; It's about the ability to compose. Category theory enables more general and powerful composition of components. That is not to say that without CT you won't be able to compose, it's just more cumbersome and less flexible.
kailuowang··on Basic Category Theory for Scala Programmers
We started a project to translate all Haskell sample code to scala in Bartosz's Category theory for programmers book https://github.com/typelevel/CT_from_Programmers.scala
kailuowang··on Why category theory matters in programming
oops...
kailuowang··on Preventing server overload: limit requests being processed
I developed a library to guard against server overload. It automatically gauges the capacity and rejects requests exceeding it.

kailuowang··on Yelp’s Six-Year Conflict with Google
I found that Yelp's reviews very unreliable. My business owner friends told me that they are constantly harassed by yelp's sales representatives to buy the right to "clean up" their reviews. I don't see how yelp can continue trash their brand like this and blaming Google for their low performance.
kailuowang··on Elon Musk invested early in DeepMind just to keep tabs on the progress of AI
I think Elon Musk's concern over A.I. has been widely misunderstood. His concern is NOT A.I. replacing the human species. As he clearly stated in this interview[1], his concern is that the immense power of A.I. owned by a small group of organizations or even individuals, which IMO, is well justified.

kailuowang··on Let's stop bashing C#
Stop defending the language of your choice as well. Each popular language has its own set of suitable use cases. Ignore the attacks on the language you are using, instead, try the other languages to see what they are good at.
kailuowang··on Kodak Ektra
An entry level DSLR, for most users, won't beat a top tier smartphone like Google pixel. A bulky professional DSLR is too much for most users. High quality mirorless cameras with ASPC or full frame size sensors are the only type of cameras that are relevant to mass consumers. If Kodak makes such a camera with a smartphone like interface, that would be interesting. They missed the opportunity.

kailuowang··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Posted a masterpiece by Stephen Shore, Keegan didn't care for it.

Static composition, my eyes don't really know where to look and the pic is not very exciting… It's flawed, but you'll get there: keep working on your composition and lighting. This is at most 3.8/10. #messy#boring

kailuowang··on Japanese writing system basics
As mentioned below, 食in Cantonese or ancient Chinese means eat as a verb
kailuowang··on Japanese writing system basics
Yes Chinese characters (used in Japanese as kanji, which means Chinese character) often are composed of smaller elements or other characters. it common for a character to be composed of two common parts, one indicating meaning in some way,the other indicating pronunciation.
kailuowang··on Why Kotlin is my next programming language (2015)
Yes scala is complex, but your scala code doesnt have to be. The reason that std collection lib and scalaz code is hard to read is their inclination to push the limit of utilizing the advanced scala features to make their usage really easy.

That being said scala is not for one who wants to plateau quickly. It takes years.

kailuowang··on Java Generics Are Turing Complete
I actually think type erasure might even be the right way to implement generics. You see, the point of static types is to provide compilation time check. That is, types are compilation time concern. So yeah, type erasure did introduce some inconvenience but if you need to access them during runtime, either you did it wrong or the compiler fails at some point.

So, claiming type erasure making generic useless is a false argument.

kailuowang··on Facebook admits rogue employees may have shown bias against conservatives

kailuowang··on Being a Developer After 40
> I'm from an Eastern Europe and my family never was rich

Yes, you earned your success, but being from a poor Eastern Europe family doesn't say anything about whether or not you experienced a "white privilege". Try imagine yourself being a colored female from a poor Eastern Europe family might help a bit.

kailuowang··on The driverless truck is coming, and it’s going to automate millions of jobs
Or, even better, Robot land-pirates.

There are many many things out there that you can steal without harming a fellow human now.

When robots are doing all the tedious jobs for humans, you either live for free or work for fun. Not much need for breaking the law (unless that's just fun).

kailuowang··on The Absurd Primacy of the Car in American Life
In U.S. culture is being shaped by business more than other countries. Car culture, gun culture are two great examples of commercial cultures in U.S.
kailuowang··on Strategic Scala Style: Principle of Least Power
Not relevant to your post, but I kept getting asked by data engineers who are interested picking up scala (thanks to spark): how shall I learn scala? Do you happen to have any advice for them?
kailuowang··on Strategic Scala Style: Principle of Least Power
The fun part of developing in scala is that it supports multiple completely different styles and paradigms, each has its own strength and weakness. You can pick the most suitable one for the functionality you are working on. On other hand it also make learning more complex. To be most effective, you need to learn these styles and paradigms and the subset of the language features you limit yourself to when in that style. Otherwise, scala is definitely one of the languages that is most capable of producing messy programs.
kailuowang··on Taxi, Uber, and Lyft Usage in New York City
In NYC (or at least in Manhattan), when taxis are readily available (non-extreme weather), Uber is 2x to 3x less convenient than taxi. When taxis aren't readily available i.e. extreme weather, Uber is 3x - 5x more expensive than taxi and still takes forever to get one.

I believe that Uber in NYC will remain a niche player. But I do appreciate some competition against the taxis.
