kailoa··on Ask HN: Trivial etiquette question - can he touch my laptop screen?
Big big upvote. This works much better than the passive-agressive method of silently glaring and cleaning your screen in front of co-worker.

Here are more examples of the same technique:

"This is totally my own OCD, but it drives me crazy if..."

"Just a sec, I have to apologize, but..."

"It's probably just me, but it kills me when..."

(Don't forget to smile and be apologetic, tone is key)

kailoa··on Palm Pre Privacy Invasion
The iTunes/iPhone asks your permission before sending crash reports. If the original article is true, then palm is potentially in for a backlash. This kind of information transmission should clearly be opt-in.
kailoa··on Portland, Oregon, is (one of the) most entrepreneurial towns in the world
His definition of entrepreneur is different from what we normally think of tech startups, but even for tech startups, Portland surely ranks high. I've lived there and at one point was a late state startup employee. It's got the moxie and atmosphere for it, but it still doesn't have the surrounding ecosystem like Silicon Valley or even Boston.

That being said, in my list of best cities for startups, Portland makes a good case for 3rd place.

Quality of living is super high. Combined with a reasonable cost of living, it's a fantastic place to live.

kailoa··on Thinking about starting a business? Here is why you shouldn’t
pg mentioned that half of the early YCs died. I think with traditional VCs, I've heard more like 90% failure. Ron Conway (the angel) said that it's thirds for him. (1/3 of investments lose it all, 1/3 return the money, 1/3 have some kind of successful exit)
kailoa··on SFGate inserts a link to the story when you copy text on their site. Try it
Mac OS X, safari 4, Doesn't work. When I copy parts of a story, all I get are a couple of blank lines.
kailoa··on Joel Spolsky: The Day My Industry Died
Joel uses his articles as marketing tools. FogBugz makes money and CityDesk is part of that industry that died.
kailoa··on How to Apply to Y Combinator
If I applied, I would definitely make a video, even if noone looks at. PG has mentioned multiple times that it's statistically helpful. If it comes down to you and some other guy who didn't make a video, I'm sure the extra effort is noticed.

Sounds like a good risk/reward profile for my effort to me.

kailoa··on Fruity treats, customization, and supersonics: FogBugz 7 is here
I'm convinced one of the most valuable tricks Joel picked up in his long career is that of producing "truly engaging writing."

Vision statements are common sources of yawns, but Joel doesn't ever let that happen.

kailoa··on CUDA-based hash crackers for the EngineYard contest
The EngineYard Contest is becoming a lottery of smarts. The ability to build or find the best solution increases your odds.
kailoa··on Ask HN: What service do you use for personal file backup?
For just about everything non-media, I use mercurial to a colosite. Works fantastic. Big media files (movies, iTunes Library, etc.) are backed up locally to a big data server.
kailoa··on Ask HN: Review our new Kongregate feature - level sharing
Reminds me of the fun people have passing FreeCell RNG seed numbers around. Anybody who finds a particularly tough one will write it down and pass it around to the other FreeCell addicts. Then there's a small local mini competition to see who can get it done first.
kailoa··on Simplenote
Classic iphone marketing strategy: make something Gruber likes.
kailoa··on Ask HN: Would you guys visit a purely hacker-oriented version of HN?
Absolutely. I'd even expect some cross-pollination as well.
kailoa··on Ask HN: Which books and open source projects make up the programming "canon"?
SICP comes to mind... Knuth's TAOCP also.
kailoa··on Ask YC: Anyone at WWDC this year?
I'm going. I'll be happy to meet up with any other HN denizens for beer/coffee/chat/whatever.
kailoa··on Ask HN: A site like Hacker News, but about art?
Dustin Curtis recommended me 3 sites on twitter the other day:

http://www.alistapart.com/ Articles and reference

http://creattica.com/ Social voting on CSS, logos, biz cards etc.

http://typophile.com/ Mostly discussion as far as I can tell.

Creattica is by far my favorite for just browsing. ALA is popular destination for anyone involved in web design.

kailoa··on Ask HN: Please (re)review my new social learning site
One more. I'd also like to see "sample course" that I can take that _doesn't_ require me to log in. A lesser alternative would be a video screencast of an actual course.
kailoa··on Ask HN: do you know of any commandline usability / improvement research?
Friendly shell has gotten some attention over the past few seasons.

http://fishshell.org/user_doc/design.html

kailoa··on Ask HN: Please (re)review my new social learning site
I'd like to suggest supporting OpenID instead of making me create another user/pass.
kailoa··on UVa First-Year Student Computer Inventory: 1997-2008 Comparison
That last graph is one of those "holy shit" types of revelations. MS should be scared spitless.
kailoa··on A Financial Prophet Online Is Vilified in Reality
Sometimes technology has a way of overwhelming societies capability to adapt to it.

Cocaine problems in the US. Ultrasound in a country with a one child policy and a strong cultural preference for boys. Here, rigid societal hierarchies are subverted by the anonymity of the internet.

Technology has the amazing power to shape society as well as mirror it.

kailoa··on Ask HN: Why is WolframAlpha serving rendered text images instead of plain text?
I'd assume that not everything that WA puts out will be text or tables. They've got graphs, complex mathematical formulas, general purpose image manipulation and who knows what else.

It may have made sense to "unify" the rendering engine. This makes the simple case you point out look silly of course.

kailoa··on Tell HN: PG's 6 Unexpected Advantages of "Cheapness" in a Startup
I can only assume there was context involved. Something like:

With no money, you only have two viable choices:

1. Build something to get to Ramen Profitability

2. Raise Money.

If you don't focus exclusively on one or the other, you may be making a strategic mistake.

kailoa··on Solaris + ZFS = The Perfect Home File/Media Server
About half of that is the cost of the drives. That's not going to change no matter which solution you get.

Compared to the 4-bay $500 Drobo, (plus $200 for DroboShare) it's not bad considering he's getting exactly what he wants.

The trade off is that he has to maintain the Solaris box, and the size/footprint of the overall solution.

kailoa··on Solaris + ZFS = The Perfect Home File/Media Server
http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=82...

Thecus 7700 supports ZFS. 7 drive bays though.

kailoa··on Solaris + ZFS = The Perfect Home File/Media Server
The CPU is overkill, but make sure you get a 64-bit CPU. The way ZFS is designed it basically requires as large a mapping as you can get.
kailoa··on Poorly Made in China: Why So Many Chinese Products are Born to be Bad
Good article, but all problem description, no solutions.

I'd like to understand what drove the Japanese and American industries to turn around, and how much of that is applicable to China.

kailoa··on The App Store Is a Classic Example Of A Broken Business Process
It's a completely separate entity from their main product lines.

Until there is financial incentive to fix it, change will be slow. This includes the emergence of serious alternatives. Serious being defined as platforms that make developers money. So far, Nokia, Palm and BB and even Android don't count (though they may in the future).

kailoa··on Entreprenuers fleeing high-tax britain
A fisherman would never sell his rod to buy bread. Are the tax administrators/politicians that short-sighted?
kailoa··on Beware Programming Language Requirements On Job Postings
I don't know why technical interviews/recruiting are such a fascinating subject. I think it is related to the fact that they are such an imperfect mechanism for finding employees/partners.

Well known cliches like the 10x more effective programmer and the Microsoft/Google methods of recruiting add to the mysticism.

This particular article has some good tips though I'm not sure how practical it is. Modern recruiting uses extensive keyword searching. Unless your goal is to weed out some of that, this kind of job posting may not get too many hits.
