kaendfinger··on Phacility is winding down, Phabricator no longer actively maintained
I contributed to Phabricator a few times, and Evan was a pleasure to work with. I'm sorry to see it go but I hope for the best for Evan. I really hope this is a goodbye on to something great.

Phabricator will hold a great place in my heart as software written by a developer for developers that is well thought out, dog-fooded to the max, and fun.

My hope is that it can be well stewarded by a company into continuity. I wish I had the time to do so.

In short, thank you Evan and all those in the community for many years of wonderful software development.

kaendfinger··on Reasonably priced color e-ink display
This sounds really similar to https://www.mobvoi.com/us/pages/ticwatchpro which is a Smartwatch with a dual layer display, one of them is e-ink, the other is an AMOLED display.
kaendfinger··on How SSL Kill Switch works on iOS 12
I did something similar but for macOS. I used Frida, a really easy toolkit for intercepting native calls.

kaendfinger··on This blog runs on my Raspberry Pi
> So the only time my blog will be down is when I'm out of power or if my Internet is down!

This didn't turn out to be true.

Should have added an extra node...

kaendfinger··on HTTP static server one-liners
rclone is our backup solution at work, huge props to you!
kaendfinger··on Movie Theater in town created by Disney World closed for almost a decade (2018)
Just to clear any confusion, this is not a town created by the relative existence of Disney World, this is actually originally part of the original Disney World property that Disney used to create a new town called Celebration, which was then sold off.

PS: I live two miles from there.

kaendfinger··on An Antique Toaster That's Better Than Today’s [video]
Highly Recommend this channel btw, lots of quality videos on old technology.
kaendfinger··on Chrome 78 Beta: a new Houdini API, native file system access and more
I find it interesting how the solution to the OTP SMS problem is to provide the SMS Receiver API. I think the iOS keyboard OTP suggestion is the right way to do that. An SMS Receiver API, even if secure, just seems like a backwards way to solve this problem.
kaendfinger··on Could the Apollo 11 moon landing be duplicated today? ‘Lots of luck with that’
Disclaimer: Not a moon landing denier or anything of that sort, I’ve just educated myself on why people think this.

My understanding is that people believe that they did indeed launch a rocket but that the landing on the moon was faked. Some claim they were in orbit around the earth the whole time, some others claim they went around the moon but staged the landing. There are even some who believe that we did land on the moon but there was a tape that was staged in the event of an accident. The level of moon landing denial varies by each and every person.

kaendfinger··on The death watch for the X Window System has probably started
Remote operation over the network is actively worked on via Waypipe, seemed to work pretty well for me.

kaendfinger··on The death watch for the X Window System has probably started
Waypipe does this in a really similar way to x forwarding.

kaendfinger··on Two years of postmarketOS
That's awesome! More stuff is in the works too, I plan to start working on a UI for pmOS on Glass. For such an interesting piece of hardware, it's so sad to see it just waste away :)
kaendfinger··on Two years of postmarketOS
I contributed support for Google Glass nearly two years ago, went on a long hiatus, came back, and reflashed... it still works!

The people in the pmOS community are also amazing, big thanks to them for a wonderful project, hope there are many great years ahead.

kaendfinger··on Hertz bug leads to people being erroneously arrested and jailed
Imagine if this happened to you, assuming this is true. The settlements should be big and somebody at Hertz should go to prison for at least a medium amount of time, effectively it’s filing a false police report.
kaendfinger··on Microsoft open sources parts of Minecraft: Java Edition
To the contrary you were an inspiration for me, you even joined our small development community and were interested in our development.

Nobody is perfect, you’ll always screw up with one person and succeed with another :)

kaendfinger··on Linux developers threaten to pull “kill switch”
Why do people in the name of diversity destroy everything they touch?
kaendfinger··on A new kernel polling interface
This changed recently so both of you are right in different ways.
kaendfinger··on Wikipedia bans agenda-driven editor, but punishes the messenger too
Cue the people trying to claim that anyone in this entire world is unbiased. I'm biased, you're biased, everyone's biased. CNN is biased, NYT is biased, Fox News is biased, NPR is biased. We should all stop pretending that our own news source is unbiased. It's simply not true.
kaendfinger··on Vendors, Disclosure, and a bit of WebUSB Madness
If you meant to reply to my comment, Google is perhaps the largest deployer of Yubico products, and that is where their collaboration holds the most weight.

If there is a security issue with YubiKeys, it puts Google's corporate systems at risk.

kaendfinger··on Luxury hotels are being inundated with requests from self-described influencers
I think this goes along with the (perhaps perceived) increase in self-centeredness in society.
kaendfinger··on Vendors, Disclosure, and a bit of WebUSB Madness
The real reason is Google buys YubiKeys enmasse from them for employee use (every employee has one), and works with them closely on in various ways.

In fact, they were closely involved when developing the USB Type-C variant.

kaendfinger··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
Can confirm, Phabricator is awesome!
kaendfinger··on FCC declines to punish Sinclair for its ‘must-run’ segments and scripts
The "fire" in a movie theater argument is a horse than has been beaten to death for so long, and I seriously doubt anyone who says this phrase knows it's history, or even cares to think for themselves about how much of a cliche it is.
kaendfinger··on Gallup Study Shows Well-Being in Decline Across America
There are some studies that show that suicide rates are the higher than normal in areas where manufacturing jobs have dried up. Surprised nobody even mentions that on HN, although on second thought, it's probably not that surprising.
kaendfinger··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
Actually it's going 2018.
kaendfinger··on Modern Media Is a DoS Attack on Free Will
Breitbart has an interesting theory on this: Present your bias, and admit your publication has a world view, because even NPR has a world view.

Nobody is unbiased, so stop trying to be unbiased, and present how you see it. Then, a real reader will go to multiple "view points" and gather their own opinion.

kaendfinger··on Is billionaire VC Peter Thiel trying to break up Google?
A few logical errors: 1. He doesn't have a web browser because of the security concerns, and this is not unique to him. 2. Trump using a computer is a rare photo, same can be said for many many celebrities (career politicians at a computer is rather not rare due to public filming in Congressional buildings for example) 3. Trump has been known to be a late-night researcher (Cruz's father killed JFK?, InfoWars, etc.)
kaendfinger··on Dart website down due to invalid DNS
www.dartlang.org works
kaendfinger··on Ask HN: When are you considered a “senior” programmer?
I've been afraid of this. I've been working at a company for over 2 years. I'm 17, started here right after I turned 15. I've worked on many high profile projects. I've experienced a lot of respect, even with my age, but I don't want that to fade away in years to come.
kaendfinger··on AngularDart is going all Dart
Lars Bak made V8, and both Kasper Lund and Lars Bak contributed the HotSpot VM. And if you don't consider Gilad Bracha (Who works on the Dart Language Specification) to be a language designer, you probably don't have a clue what he has done.
