kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on The Year of McDonald's
Wherever my internet at home goes out, the McD down the way is my "office." Hasn't happened in 5 years or so, but I've had to do it 4-5 times over the years. Take customer calls, write code, have team meetings. Works fine, and the $1 coffee ain't bad.

That software sounds cool, what's it called and where do I get it?
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on How much do I need to change my face to avoid facial recognition?
I had a friend who was a checker at a large local chain, and before shift one day he popped into the security office (he was friends with the head of security) to say hi, and they had every camera in the front of the store trained on the employee working the customer service desk.

Someone got fired that day.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Portland airport grows with expansive mass timber roof canopy
This is the first article I've read about it that doesn't mention the cost.

$2.15 billion (yes, with a B).

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Kenya and "the decline of the greatest coffee" (2021)
I'm similar, with the exception of Starbucks. I just can't stand it. But that makes it easy to avoid.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on German WWII Soldier Grave Found with Mesolithic Tools, Roman and Byzantine Coins
I think we as a society need to stop trying to make everyone comfortable all the time. All it does is remove the requirement of taking responsibility for your behavior. You can't prepare the world from the people, you have to prepare people for the world. Give them the tools to handle uncomfortable situations.

To quote John Wayne: "I’m responsible only for what I say, not what you understand."

You can say Nazi, it's okay. Better to remember history than to bury it in obscurities.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Kids are looking for community. Connections with other people who they share experiences with (and can make more experiences together). They're looking for others who see the world the way they do.

The solution is more face to face time with other families on a regular basis. Replace Facebook with actual faces.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
Interesting. My kids aren't allowed on social media, and they're happier and less moody than their friends who are addicted to it. They see it, and don't even want social media anymore because their friends spend so much time on their phones rather than being present and having real experiences.

I don't think I would wish social media on any child, though I believe it's a problem that can be solved not by more laws, but by better parenting.

> The Internet - WebChatBroadcasting, ICQ, IRC, etc - was like a gift from the gods in the early 1990s.

I grew up in a wealthy very tech-savvy area, and most kids except the really geeky like me didn't get internet until the mid or late 1990s, so you weren't as "backwards" as you think. You would have still been on the bleeding edge to have internet in the early 1990s.

And interestingly Clarke set the destination as Saturn, whereas Kubrick made it Jupiter. In the sequel book, 2010, Clarke used Jupiter as in the movie.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Tiny Glade 'built' its way to >600k sold in a month
Love Tiny Glade. You can very casually create amazing places. I fire it up on boring corporate calls just to keep my hands busy.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on The Internet Gopher from Minnesota
There were ways around that, though I never found the experience to be worth the hassle. The Internet Adapter [1] was the one my shell account supported back in the mid-90s.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Burial chamber of an ancient Egyptian priestess is discovered after 4k years
I heard - and I wish I remembered where, but possibly when I heard Dr Zahi Hawass speak one time - that much of the grave robbing actually happened within a few years of the tombs being sealed in the first place. So it could still be 4k years since they were last opened.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on The heist that made the Mona Lisa famous
While we're on this tangent, I found Audrey Hepburn's "How To Steal A Million" rather entertaining.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Since the '60s, Ford has stored cars underground in a Kansas City cave
You know it's possible to gain citizenship in other countries, right? You may have to be inconvenienced a bit to leave the USA, but it's entirely possible to do it. You aren't a prisoner here, you're free to leave it all behind.

I have no plans to leave, I quite enjoy the freedoms we have here.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Since the '60s, Ford has stored cars underground in a Kansas City cave
Probably easier and more comfortable to move to Canada or Europe.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Ribbonfarm Is Retiring
Regarding your 3rd point, this is the same behavior we see when people say they're leaving the country if X candidate wins an election. They never leave, because change is hard and they're addicted to the attention they get when they complain.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Sears Homes 1915-1920
Depends on the local building codes. Some rural places have little or no codes, so build whatever you want however you want it.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Ask HN: If you were rewriting Emacs from scratch, what would you do differently?

Nay, quite the opposite; I scrolled down specifically looking for comments like these, because I knew they'd be here. Kind of comforting, really.
