I wonder if this will change now that camera-enabled glasses are becoming more common.
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
Yes, but we've clearly seen the value and effectiveness of French law here...
kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News
I think it's more likely to affect aspiring authors, rather than established ones.

Sadly, like keeping track of "attempted burglaries"[0], it's impossible to know the extent.

[0] how do you count attempts where the burglar was unsuccessful/left no trace and nobody was home to notice the attempt?

The law doesn't prevent someone from doing or using something. It punishes them for doing or using something (if caught), but never prevents.

If laws had the power to prevent, Chicago would be some sort of utopia.

Disagree. The value proposition of AI is that you can focus your caring on the things that matter, and let the machine do the dirty work.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread
If this is the question they asked:

Is corruption widespread throughout the government in this country, or not?

Then that's very open to interpretation. Even if I thought the federal government was not corrupt, but I did think the local or state government was corrupt (or many local governments were, not just my own), I'd answer yes to this question.

They should have broken it down a bit more.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
Not as much anymore. Sure, trap teams are common, but we used to have school rifle clubs that taught safe handling of firearms.

Now we've decided that if we don't talk about something, people won't get curious about it. Sadly, without being properly taught how to be safe, that generally ends tragically.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
This brings to mind the government set up in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress: it takes 2/3rds to pass a law, but only 1/3rd to repeal it.

The thinking being if a law isn't good/useful enough to garner 2/3rd support, it shouldn't be law. And if a law is so bad that it can't even get more than 1/3rd the people to support it, it should no longer be a law.

Sadly, I don't think it'd work today. People are too divided, it's too easy to import the votes you need, and people are too lazy to understand a law beyond the headline or what the news tells them about it.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Brits would quite like their private messages to stay private
Yes, completely giving up is definitely the better option.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Why your local LLM feels dumber than it is
I've had great success using Gemma4 even on old hardware (4GB VRAM). I haven't found a Qwen model that can match it on very low end hardware.

Then why are so many non-white, non-Christians still flocking here? Why would anyone want to come to this country if it's such a hellhole?

I'm not buying it. Turn off the news and go out into society, preferably one of those small so-called racist communities. You'll find out the truth, one way or the other.
