> the point of life is to live, not to work

I'd love to learn how you came to this definitive conclusion. At no point in human history have humans not worked (I'm sure there are some limited exceptions, none of which have been sustainable).

Perhaps you meant to say the point of life is to survive, but you have to work to make that happen.

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
There are so many. Muppet Christmas Carol, of course. Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas is a classic. White Christmas, a bit cliché but I love it. Bishop's Wife (with Carey Grant) is also a classic. Home Alone for the funny.

And probably a hundred others.

> then you're not living in a country where the vast majority of communications are done on WhatsApp or Signal

I live in the USA and use Signal for, like, 3 friends that I also can call or text, and I've never used WhatsApp in my life.

So, if you live in the USA, you can absolutely get by without those two.

But there are likely other apps that would be more difficult to do without. Not impossible, mind you, just more effort.

> This is a gentle fiction. The GOP has the 51 votes to change this rule by lunchtime tomorrow and proceed to govern according to the mandate they claim. They may choose not to do that, as is their prerogative.

You're correct, of course, but they're doing something that's exceedingly rare these days: they're thinking about the ramifications for when the shoe is on the other foot.

Which is kinda dumb, because Democrats have shown time and again that they're willing to throw the rulebook out when it suits them (but they'll cry crocodile tears when it's done to them).

It's all moot anyway; now that the election is over, and they don't need to leverage their constituents well-being for votes, Democrats have indicated a willingness to pass the bill.

This argument is often unsuccessfully used in other areas; gun rights jumps to mind.

Often the new laws only affect those who are already following the laws. Those who are willing to break the laws will ignore and/or find ways around them (see: Chicago, DC, etc).

kQq9oHeAz6wLLS··on When private practices merge with hospital systems, costs go up
Ironically, there are two nationwide networks for sharing patient data - CareEverywhere and Carequality. They even have a bridge between the two, so in effect it's one large network.

But that's all predicated on the provider's EHR being able to talk to it, or at least talk to an interface engine that can be configured to talk to it. And money. It costs money.

> little evidence of the same level of systemic abuse

You not looking for it doesn't mean "little evidence."

It's well documented that the previous administration pressured social media to silence views it didn't like, as well as instances of debanking conservative organizations.

That's not to say this administration doesn't throw its weight around, too, but to think it's only one side make you complicit in the problem.

I would also remind the short of memory that during covid, the states with the most draconian restrictions were mostly left-leaning, and many were loathe to give up that control.

Control of the people comes from all sides. The end result is the same, but the methods are different, intended to make people happy to be controlled.

Maybe previous administrations have been economically incentivized to not fix those problems. Perhaps those previous administrations didn't have our best interests in mind.

I think the implication with that phrasing is that HN is more left-leaning (like Silicon Valley), which traditionally isn't into "prepping", so this "pro-prepping" article is an interesting anomaly, perhaps even a harbinger.

> (You can believe Portlanders hated Californians that moved up there. Or so I've been told.)

They still do, only it's not really Portlanders anymore, it's all the smaller cities that hate them. Why? A couple reasons: they came in and pay over asking price for housing, driving up prices across the board so those working for local non-conglomerates have a hard time affording housing. And then they vote contrary to how the locals do (locals, I might add, who didn't have any problem with how things were run before, even if their "betters" felt they were "backwards").

Basically, they end up burying the local culture and replacing it with California.
