jyriand··on Busting the 10x software engineer myth
10x developers exist, but often they leave mess for others to clean up.
jyriand··on The Buffett Indicator
The heuristic that market crashes every ~9 years seems to work well. 2020 had a pretty steep correction, so I will wait another 7 years and start worrying. That might not be optimal, but 70% of the time you can predict the weather by saying it will be the same as yesterday.
jyriand··on I Had Removed Google Analytics and Google Services from My Website Why I Did It?
I have a Hugo blog running on Netlify. All I need is to know if someone has visited it or not. I'm using Google analytics currently but would gladly use something much simpler. Any alternatives?
jyriand··on No More Medium – Build Your Own Site (2019)
Why not write on medium and have a Hugo blog? You can publish the same post on both places and link Medium readers to your blog.
jyriand··on No More Medium – Build Your Own Site (2019)
Substack is great if you already have followers. Medium is great when you are starting out and looking for readers.
jyriand··on Write More, but Shorter
Writer shorter, yes. Write like a robot, no.
jyriand··on Ask HN: How Do You Learn?
I have outsourced my memory to zettelkasten/(second brain) type of notetaking. I'm focusing on trying to understand the fundamentals and core ideas instead of just memorizing stuff. Went back to school after 10 years, let's see how it works out.
jyriand··on The SEC has told us it wants to sue us over Lend. We don’t know why
It opens on Medium app for me and I can see the post just fine.
jyriand··on Show HN: With a 9-5 job and 2 kids I have finally finished my first MVP
I think Derek Sivers gives a good example in his blog post: https://sive.rs/pa

I know it's unrealistic for most dad's but a good ideas to strive for.

Edit: fix name

jyriand··on How to Remember What You Read
Honest question: why would you want to remember what you read? Instead take notes or use post-it notes to mark the interesting bits and you can always come back to them, given you have a good enough system for storing and linking. You can't rely on your memory anyway.
jyriand··on Thoughts of work invaded my life until I learned how to unplug
What I have learned is that every behavior serves a inner goal or purpose. You can try to figure out what the goal is by asking "by doing this what am I avoiding or what am I seeking".
jyriand··on Show HN: Lisp implementation in modern Java, Go, C#, TypeScript, Python
Do you know of any project that has produced "a Lisp" language?
jyriand··on Overthinking
Overthinking is when the Law of Diminishing Returns kicks in. You can see it happening every day in the meeting rooms while planning new features/releases, we don't really get any new information but it's comforting to just talk about it.
jyriand··on Overthinking
Where I'm from we have similar sayings:

- Don't dive head first into water.

- Measure nine times, cut once.

And a random saying I just remembered: "Autumn has the eyes of a summer and the teeth of a wolf."

Edit:formatting

jyriand··on Fourth police officer who responded to Jan 6 attack dies by suicide
Strange, I'm also from an European country, but can see the site fine
jyriand··on A better business model for video folks
Do you have an example channel?
jyriand··on Why have there been so many own goals at the Euros?
I wonder what it the statistics on missed penalty kicks, as it seems that there are way too many misses/saves by goal keeper.
jyriand··on Tony Hoare answers questions [video]
GOAT as the OG of his field
jyriand··on This Chemical Does Not Exist
I think the hard part is that you can't draw something that already exists
jyriand··on A Beginner’s Guide to Miles Davis
Let's Dance is actually a track that gave young Stevie Ray Vaughan a chance to shine with his guitar.
jyriand··on A Beginner’s Guide to Miles Davis
At least for me it seems that jazz is meant to be listened to by musicians. Otherwise you will miss 90% of what's going on. I remember an episode from Youn Indiana Jones Chronicles, where he stumbled upon jazz scene and learned to play a trumpet, he started soloing and everyone was like:"this is not jazz" and I was thinking "this is pretty good". I'm able to enjoy blues because I understand basics of it, but jazz seems way over my head. I wish there was a course, a series that could teach you how to listen.
jyriand··on How to think clearly
Sometimes, half asleep I come up with a solution to a problem or a great idea. But then, waking up in the morning it feels like most ridiculous thing.
jyriand··on Elevator Saga: An elevator programming game (2015)
Reminds me a parable from Are your lights on by Gerald Weinberg.
jyriand··on Calculus for Seven Year Olds [pdf]
Sometimes the problem is the notation itself(divided by symbol/fraction doesn't have any meaning to kids yet, and there are at least 4 different ways you can write divided by or fraction of). It might be easier to start off by writing "1 of 8 pieces" and then teach the shorthand 1/8 and then show the connection to division. Basically it's like learning APL for the first time

Edit: typo

jyriand··on Kelly Criterion – how to calculate optimal bet sizes
How you will go bust in favorable bet by N N Taleb - https://youtu.be/91IOwS0gf3g
jyriand··on Microsoft Retires Azure Blockchain
Not sure what do you mean by blockchain exactly, but maybe how about this: https://guardtime.com/
jyriand··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
This reminds me of a time when Shazam went overboard trying to stop a guy who implemented some kind of basic recognition algorithm based off of PHD thesis.
jyriand··on The modern trap of turning hobbies into hustles (2019)
Just a quote I like from Great at Work: "Do less, then obsess"
jyriand··on On Smoking
This reminded me of this Bill Hicks bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPVivwLym-c (trigger warning)
jyriand··on The Belugas Have Landed
For some reason I was expecting to read how belugas were catapulted over borders.
