jwallaceparker··on Things 2 is out (Mac/iOS app)
I love love love love Wunderkit and Wunderlist. Mostly web-based but slick Mac and iOS apps are on the way.
jwallaceparker··on Show HN: A RottenTomatoes for Books
Sounds cool. But where are all the books?

No Hemingway, Vonnegut, Faulkner, Kerouac, Fitzgerald.

Why no classics?

jwallaceparker··on Show HN: Collections for Mac, now with Instagram Support and a Revamped UI
Looks beautiful, but there is no description the app or its purpose - just a description of 2 of its features.

So, what is it?

jwallaceparker··on New Dropbox Pro plans
Agreed. That is so annoying.

I just spent five minutes digging through my Pro account to see why I hadn't been updated to the 100G limit.

Then went back to the article to see this at the bottom: "All this goodness goes live on our pricing page this evening, so stay tuned." Ugh.

jwallaceparker··on It all began with a strange email
> And it totally made sense that hyperinflation would occur since the creation of virtual gold was limitless and effortless

The creation of the US dollar is also limitless and effortless.

jwallaceparker··on Retina MacBook Pro full of Air-style proprietary parts
This is going to be a trend with Apple.

They have a good thing going with the iPhone and iPad devices which are both non-upgradeable: consumers are compelled to buy a new device every couple of years or so.

It's pretty clear they're getting rid of the Mac Pro, which is highly configurable (with memory, storage and graphics cards) and thus has a much longer life span.

So is Apple aiming for a future where you have to buy a new laptop every 2 years to have a machine that is relevant?

jwallaceparker··on Where the Heat and the Thunder Hit Their Shots
I'm a die hard NBA fan and have never heard of anyone hating the Thunder.

Why do people hate the Thunder?

I can see the argument that some Seattle fans would resent that the team left, but I think their anger would be directed toward the owners involved or David Stern - not the team itself.

jwallaceparker··on CheckThis ‘Instagram for Publishing’ Raises $910K
This reminds me of this time when I was younger and my grandfather told us he had a time machine in his workshop.

Nobody in the family believed him and he locked the workshop so we couldn't look to see. He kept telling us it was in there, though.

This went on for weeks until finally he did an unveiling. We all stood outside the workshop and waited for him to open the door. He was about to open the door but then my aunt left the room to take a bundt cake out of the oven.

Finally she came back and we had cake. We almost forgot about things until my grandfather opened the door and walked out holding a small digital clock.

"This is my time machine," he said. So it was a time machine, but not a time travel machine. There's a difference.

The bundt cake was terrific.

jwallaceparker··on The $4 Million Complaint Call
Great story.

I always appreciate a company that has top rate customer service.

Amazon.com is the best example I can think of these days.

Comcast is the worst.

jwallaceparker··on Bill Murray on taking chances and saying "No"
In the interview he's talking specifically about saying "Yes" or "No" to an acting job.

If he says "Yes" to everything he'd be in a lot of terrible films. This could be a detriment to his career.

I think it's a completely different situation when you're talking about whether or not you hang out with a friend. In that case, I'd agree with you.

jwallaceparker··on The futures of Facebook and Google are embedded in these two images
And why would make that up?

I've done experiments like that plenty of times to prove it to people. I can tell whether my iPhone is in 2G or 3G mode with my eyes closed.

It's well-documented. Search for "ElectroSensitivity."

Phones with a high SAR value cause headaches for a subset of the population - I'm one of them.

jwallaceparker··on The futures of Facebook and Google are embedded in these two images
re: Google Glasses

I can never wear a pair of glasses that has a 3G connection.

For better or for worse, I experience heightened ElectroSensitivity to the point where a 3G device that's operating within a few feet of me gives me a headache.

Most mobile carriers are already starting to deprecate their 2G networks.

Wearable wireless devices like Google Glasses will be a hazard for me, and many others.

Within the next few years, I won't even be able to use a cell phone.

jwallaceparker··on Save Time On Hacker News: Mark All Read
Looks cool. It would be great if you could differentiate between the items you've actually visited and those you've "marked as read."
jwallaceparker··on I sued a telemarketer and got $4,000
Prison should be for violent crimes.

This kind of thing should be settled in civil court - as it is.

jwallaceparker··on Apple Has Removed Airfoil Speakers Touch From The iOS App Store
> Wish it were so simple

The process takes time, but it is that simple.

Granted, it would take an enormous effort to start a new company that competes against Apple, but one could do it.

But just because it takes an enormous effort that doesn't nullify the fact that consumers would indeed turn to other products if Apple products failed to satisfy.

I think a big issue to consider is that people are very satisfied with the quality of Apple's products at this point.

If somehow the government decided that people could only buy Apple products, then we'd have monopoly, and then we should be angry.

But they haven't. So we should relax.

jwallaceparker··on Apple Has Removed Airfoil Speakers Touch From The iOS App Store
> Except in a few cases, monopolies cause problems with deincentivization of innovation, uncompetitive behaviour, poorer outcomes for consumers and often higher prices than there would be otherwise were there a competitor.

I think you'll only find this is the case with government-granted monopoly.

Government-granted monopolies (US post office, some energy utilities, many transportation companies and so on) have little incentive to innovate and generally deliver poor service to consumers.

But how can you argue this about Apple? They're incredible innovators, they deliver great products that consumers love and the prices of those products generally fall over time.

jwallaceparker··on The Logic of Testing and the Testing of Logic
> And now I see it, I don’t understand why anybody could assert that writing tests is a bad idea.

Great use of the word "assert" here - pun intended?

jwallaceparker··on Maddox on Link-Baiting Aggregation Sites
>> I have a common name for a gmail address (early adopter). I get emails for every Steve, Shirley, Shane, Stephanie, Sam, etc in the world who have my last name

I do, too.

Have fun with it?

I get emails for every "J" name with my same last name. At times I respond and get into a whole lot of mischief.

jwallaceparker··on Python.org Redesign Request for Proposals
The Python website certainly doesn't have a welcoming feel to it.

A redesign will be a great move.

jwallaceparker··on Core iOS apps being replaced, one at a time
I use all the default iOS and Mac apps (except for Safari - I prefer Chrome).

I've found that Apple eventually incorporates the best features of these alternative apps into their core apps anyhow.

jwallaceparker··on Giving.github.com
I'm all for the idea of giving away programming time to charity.

I build one website for a charity each year.

But instead of using a market place like this to find a charity, I find it's a bit more rewarding to network through family and friends to find a charity you can help that you have a more personal connection to.

jwallaceparker··on Python Web Programming
Great resource.

As a side note, I find it interesting that the Django Book does not contain a chapter on test writing.

jwallaceparker··on How Pixar Almost Lost Toy Story 2 To A Bad Backup
I'm curious to hear more about users' standard backup systems for life/work (other that a version control system for code).

Any thoughts?

jwallaceparker··on How I Collect Passwords
I've been using 1Password for the past few months.

It's been incredibly useful. All my passwords are exponentially more secure and synced across my devices.

Can't recommend it enough.

jwallaceparker··on "If you want to order it, use 'view source' to find the commented-out link."
That "view source" line make this the most incredible VPS service landing page I've ever seen.
jwallaceparker··on Amazon's knock-off problem (35 Shades of Grey, anyone?)
I'm sure Amazon would've accepted a return if asked.

I acknowledge that there may be some confusion around knock-off products, but the Amazon customer service has always been top rate in my experience.

jwallaceparker··on Try right clicking GitHub's logo
I do this too. CTRL-click to open a new tab.

That is NOT working for me on a Mac.

jwallaceparker··on Death to MS Word
This article is silly.

If you want to write only text, use a text editor.

If you want a publishing tool, use Word or Pages or whatever.

jwallaceparker··on Google Begins Testing Its Augmented Reality Glasses
When I was young my grandfather got me a pair of augmented reality glasses. They had thick green rims and he also got a pair for my sister, Janine. Her pair had red rims.

We put the glasses on right away and boy did they augment! After that we really only took them off to sleep.

About three weeks later our family took a trip to New York City. We were looking at all the tall buildings and they were really tall and beautiful.

Then we took the glasses off and realized we were in Hoboken!
