jvandonsel··on Donald Knuth was framed (2020)
What’s the runtime complexity of Knuth’s solution vs the script solution?
jvandonsel··on I've used all the notebooks
I feel a need to share my notebook fetish too. Dingbats A5. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRDVVLZ
jvandonsel··on Cool-retro-term: A terminal emulator which mimics the old cathode display
How about adding the 15 kHz flyback transformer whine? Though most people who remember these terminals probably can’t hear that frequency any more.
jvandonsel··on What makes a great opening line?
“ Louie pulled off his bra and threw it down upon the casket.”

— Nick Tosches, In the Hand of Dante

jvandonsel··on How a Book Is Made – Ink, Paper and a 200k-Pound Printer
Contrast that with this old-school book printing process from 1947. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3rlsj-KEZE
jvandonsel··on Show HN: Test your shape rotation skills
I understand that the shape motion is necessary to reveal hidden parts of some shapes but it found it very distracting. A “freeze” button would have been very helpful,
jvandonsel··on The Shameful Decline of Scientific American
That must have been one of the first iPads ever made!
jvandonsel··on The Zen of Drinking Alone
In the immortal words of George Thorogood:

  “I drink alone, yeah
   With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself”
jvandonsel··on The Rise of Performative Work
The first sentence of the article grabbed me the most. “…Seinfeld”, a vintage TV sitcom…”. I guess most of my life is now considered “vintage”.
jvandonsel··on Prof. Dr. Style (2010)
As a native English speaker, this page is nearly incomprehensible to me.
jvandonsel··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
Here’s an advantage of chess.com that I haven’t heard discussed yet. When playing against the computer I can request hints when I’m stumped. If lichess supports this then I haven’t found it yet. As a mediocre player I find it very instructive.
jvandonsel··on Every Schubert Song, Ranked: Listening to 40 hours of Lieder
I strongly disagree with Mr. Brown regarding 'Alinde' (D. 904). It is transcendent. I invite him to step into the alley with me so that we can discuss this further.
jvandonsel··on I returned my Remarkable2
No. Highlights with typed notes are supported, though.
jvandonsel··on Books I loved reading this year
Why is this page so difficult to scroll through on an iPad with Firefox?
jvandonsel··on Ask HN: What's your favorite E-Ink project?
Show us pics and deets!
jvandonsel··on Discipline by King Crimson
Glad to know I’m not the only one this happens to.
jvandonsel··on Ask HN: Non-sci-fi fiction recommendations?
Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Baroque_Cycle

jvandonsel··on One Tenth of a Second
I’d be interested in reading the book, but $33 for the ebook from Amazon? What’s up with that?
jvandonsel··on Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap
Seems about right for HN comments, this one included.
jvandonsel··on “Put that in your pipe and smoke it”
And let's not forget one of Stephen Sondheim's best lines, from West Side Story:

"I like the island Manhattan.

Smoke on your pipe and put that in!"

jvandonsel··on The last generation of typewriter repairmen (2010)
As someone who learned to type one one of these things, and wrote many college papers on them, I just have to say...

Good Riddance!

jvandonsel··on Chick Corea has died
+1 on the two Bela Fleck collaborations. They're amazing.
jvandonsel··on Asteroid capsule located in Australian desert
The technician in the photo looks like he's wearing bomb disposal gear. What's the danger here?
jvandonsel··on The Birth of Unix with Brian Kernighan
This is a great interview, but the most interesting thing I learned is that I've been mispronouncing Brian's name for years. Apparently the 'g' is silent.
jvandonsel··on Casio F-91W: The strangely ubiquitous watch (2011)
Also, for those of us men with "less than manly" wrists, it doesn't look oversized, unlike the bulk of men's analog watches today.
jvandonsel··on Show HN: Read The Count of Monte Cristo and others in installments in your email
If you like this sort of thing then you may also like Samuel Pepys' diaries read in "real time" on twitter. https://twitter.com/samuelpepys
jvandonsel··on The first woman PhD in computer science was a nun (2013)
"Dartmouth relaxed the rule barring women from its computer center..."

Just wow.

jvandonsel··on Guitar Decomposed: 5. Mutating the Third
I love this series of posts. I've always wondered why guitars have irregular tuning and this explanation makes sense.
jvandonsel··on Our Bookless Future
tl;dr
jvandonsel··on Monobloc chair
Every time I see one I'm reminded of how uncomfortable they are.
