justsomehnguy··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
Because it involved a full backup - which wasn't anywhere fast on Proxmox, reinstalling the host, a full restore and then tinkering with the famous "runs everywhere (and not Java!)" boot shenaningans of that flavour of Linux OS.

And that was with the help of a backup-recovery solution which did support Proxmox, mere 6 months before that I would had stuck with an agent P2V migration of a VM to VM - which would had involved way more moving parts (can't P2V/V2V to a hypervisor which is not even installed yet) and more pain.

justsomehnguy··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
> Is there something more to the process of VM migration from VMWare than just using this tool (and manually creating the proper virtual hardware profile in the new hypervisor)?

Yes? Do that for the hundreds of VMs, with a minimal downtime, bonus points for a dumb C-level on your neck.

You would quickly learn what "just converting disk images" is not enough for moving between hypervisors.

Just as an example: last year I moved a company with two Proxmox servers to ESXi. It took a 3 months and another server as a staging point. A minuscule in modern times 1TB+ VM took a whole weekend to be moved. Of course it didn't work in that time.

justsomehnguy··on Shutting down our public encrypted DNS
You are rely here on the assumption what your resolver already knows what the zone is DNSSEC signed. If your forwarder or resolver strips that information?..
justsomehnguy··on Creating backup storage sucks
NB: Despite explictly mentioning 3-2-1 at the start TFA do not describe a proper 3-2-1 strategy.
justsomehnguy··on 120 days until Google restricts side-loading, declaring war on Android freedom
Nobody says "I'm downloading and installing an app from the official store for the platform". It's "installed an app" at best. And yes, Android phones had "an official" stores besides Play Market.

You may not answer if you don't want to but from an idle curiosity: do you have an inner monologue in your regular life?

> Photos I took for a mugshot in this period show a slight shine in my eyes that I hadn't befor

It's always fascinated me how 'the mirror of the soul' not only a very apt metaphor but how we see it even when it's a still shot.

justsomehnguy··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
I'm moving everything from Fastmail now but yeah those 10 years were good. Recent updates did the strange things to the UI but working with the identities became better.

justsomehnguy··on A 12TB Steam "teraleak" spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
If a false comparison in the first place but you/we already have a such megacorp! Sure, sure, benevolent dictator is judicially removed from the leadership for 30 years and no longer guides the megacorp in any meaningful way... but he does invest in kids in Africa.

You can have a whole one try to guess who is this.

And if you guess it right (I doubt you can answer wrong, lol) you would know a whole bunch of different reasons - including personal qualities of that "benevolent dictator" too.

NB honestly, if anything it's "his" OS what gave a lot of opportunities to the kids in the developing countries everywhere, not just Africa alone - just by providing the means to run the apps and games on almost anything. OLPC on the other hand provided an example how a specialized device made with the best intentions was a piece of shit.

justsomehnguy··on Hit anything. Discover how it rings
No sane person would write a README this way (emphasis on sane - PR dept drones aren't).

But the dead giveaway is the branches of that repo.

One giant megacorp with a benevolent dictator? Well, maybe you want that - but I do not. And we have a couple of examples of how it goes.

justsomehnguy··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
Or a straight cable to the "Uplink" port.

And some had a switch to select the mode of the uplink port.

justsomehnguy··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
I have a feeling this is some re-invention of the definitions happening.

It's just a holdover from the telephone networks, where you used a short cable to actually phsyically connect - patch[0] - two lines. Therefore - patch-panel and patch-cord or patch-cable.

> I don't have the time nor do I care about all the command line switches that are under the hood

That's the difference of a fleet admin and of a localhost.

Amusingly, this it what got Windows work in the enterprise and what Linux-based distributions never made it right.

justsomehnguy··on Yen weakens past ¥160 per dollar, eroding intervention gains
You mean the cost of a couple of beers at the end of the day?

OP clearly stated the situation was of a mutual benefit - friend got their Y now and don't need to bother with doing an exchange, OP got a few spare bucks which was a such big sum what it literally sat in the drawer for 5 (five) years.

If you claim

then you surely shouldn't tell about 'various algos'

And no, no amount of software magik would help if your L1 can't handle the traffic.

justsomehnguy··on Debugging my new network, when 10 Gigabit Ethernet Runs at 300 Megabits

justsomehnguy··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
> XMPP is the pinnacle of chat that just works.

Except no.

You can't even have a conversation between Conversations and Fluux because OMEMO is enabled by default in Conversations and there is just no OMEMO support in Fluux - despite it being actually modern one.

Gajim works but Pidgin doesn't even show "I sent you an OMEMO encrypted message but your client doesn’t seem to support that". Just like images, which is a first party in Telegram and even WhatsApp.

So much for 'just works'.

No, 'PCIe switches' has nothing to do with the smartphones at all - so their PCB real estate do not indicate anything.

> As sovereign citizens of their own country, Ukrainians have the right to decide under which flag they want to collectively pursue peace and prosperity. I believe they have made that choice clear through democratic means

It's always amusing to hear this and point out what some Ukrainians are... not equal to other Ukrainians and therefore are not allowed to have the right to decide under which flag they want to collectively pursue peace and prosperity.

Somehow it's always only one flag what is 'right' and anything other is 'not right'.

justsomehnguy··on So Many Fisker Ocean in New York, but Why?
> price of 13,000 dollars

> 399 dollars

So in 3 years it would start to bring profit. Surely someone at AL ran the numbers but 3 years is a lot for a vehicle in a heavy duty cycle and they would need repairs in that time along with the battery replacements for some units.

PS: Oh, it's even $340 on the site ATM.
